    Installing Jaunty...........

I installed Jaunty on my laptop and everything worked out of the box, save for one Intel graphics issue which I found a solution for. I never boot into my Windows partition any more. I've found very solid alternatives to all the Windows software I ran, and all free.

    Phenom X3 720 Build

This is off-topic, but raid redundancy is BS for personal use--it just wears out the redundancy drive. You're better off getting an external enclosure and doing manual incremental backups. That way the drive is used only when needed. But more to the point...

    mobo dead??

It will post but you can't access the bios setup? That's odd. Given your description of the situation, and the fact that you did not mess around with (e.g. flash) the bios, it sounds like a hardware issue. In other words, your motherboards sounds broken. I would advise you throw it out the window.

    Request for Sony FW373B Opinions

I've used one a few times but do not own one. I like it a lot. The things is very well spec'd, and the "full HD" (lie) resolution is actually really nice, albeit text is rather small. If you sit close to your screen (or have good eyes) it shouldn't be a problem. The resolution is so sweet in...

    Dell Adamo

No user-replaceable battery is severely off-putting. Otherwise it's a very nice machine, and I'm glad they went ULV. Personally though, I'd just grab a Toshiba Protege R500 or R600 which is lighter, half the price, and better spec'd (and comes with optical drive, not that I care).

    Should I upgrade my laptop?

Is there no option for a higher capacity/larger cell battery? Anyway, I would certainly go with updgrading that thing than buying a piece of crap, worthless netbook. Buy a cheap enclosure and use the 40gb hdd for backup. It's not a lot, but it's enough (for me) to backup all my music and documents.

Are you always nervous about a new build?

I always dunk my face in water right before and run around the garden eighteen times in my costume. It relieves the stress a bit before I hit the power switch. But actually I haven't built a computer for around seven years now. Man, that's crazy! However, I do get a similar feeling whenever I...

Looking for a great laptop under $1000

You can get a Dell XPS 1530 for $999 with Core 2 Duo T6600, 4GB RAM, 320GB (slow 5400RPM), 15.4" screen, 128MB Geforce 8400M GS. I think you can throw in bluetooth for $20. Check out http://www.dell.com/content/pr...?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Does anyone own a Gateway NX100X (E-100M) notebook?

For anyone reading this in the same predicament: I just received my used (possibly broken) NX100X motherboard. I put its bios chip in my motherboard and lo and behold, it's back alive (I'm typing from it right now). This proves that the bioses provided by gateway don't work on all models. That's...

Does anyone own a Gateway NX100X (E-100M) notebook?

The manufacturer, Gateway, is USELESS. I've ended up purchasing a motherboard for my laptop that I found on ebay. Who knows if it works. But then again, who cares. I just hope the Winbond chip on it is functional. Who would've thought a simple bios flash would've turned into such a nightmare?!

Does anyone own a Gateway NX100X (E-100M) notebook?

So you're saying that the chip was badly flashed three times in a row, twice using an eeprom programmer? And every time the bad flash resulted in exactly the same problem? And from two different bios versions? It would seem impossible then to properly flash it.

Does anyone own a Gateway NX100X (E-100M) notebook?

To anyone who owns this notebook, I have a huge favor to ask: if you have a bios version lower than 76.16 (e.g. 76.12 or 76.10) could you back it up using the Phoenix flash utility and email it to me? I tried flashing to 76.19 (the latest) from who-knows-what version and now the device won't...

Problems after BIOS flash update (won't boot from devices)

The flash was ok. In fact, I brought the notebook to a repair place and a technician took the BIOS chip out and flashed it in an external device. Same problem. He then reflashed it with an older version. Same problem! These are the only two versions they have listed on the support page, and...

Problems after BIOS flash update (won't boot from devices)

I recently flashed my bios on a Gateway NX100X (also E-100M) to the latest 76.19 version, and now the thing will POST, but it will not boot from any device, including USB stick, USB DVD drive, or (built in) SATA HDD. I can enter the BIOS set up utility (Phoenix) but as soon it's supposed to...

    Outlook 2007

Emails shouldn't use stylesheets. There are so some good arguments for emailing being *exclusively* plain text in format. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with basic HTML formatting, but stylesheets? Give me a break.

Should I sell my 3-year old computer?

i used to sell my computers but lately i've been holding onto them for at least 3 years so that the return isn't worth it. now i give them to people who will make good use of them. i'm inclined to think that it might be tough selling the parts individually. sell it as a complete system or...

Swap line in and line/speaker out--possible?

I am aware that certain sound cards have the ability to assign certain functions to certain jacks, so that e.g. one jack may be made to function as either a mic in or a line out. I wonder if there is software that can do this for every card (I doubt it), or at least for my onboard "Crystal WDM...

Which kind of wireless router do I need?

I had a wireless router before but it was a DSL one and I can't remember if these sorts of routers have ethernet-in ports that can take in an internet connection and emit it wirelessly. I'm living on school accomodations and the internet is provided through an ethernet jack, rather than a...

    need major help

It's obviously a hardware issue if you start choking during game play. I would recommend a physician. What have you been eating lately? Is there something obstructing your "neck pipes". Is it so serious that you require the Heimlich maneuver? If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that...

    The surprise quiz next week

Here is the answer according to logic. Suppose the (material) conditional statement 'If it is Thurs. and we have not had the surprise quiz, then we cannot have it on Friday' is true. This does not allow us to infer the consequent, viz., that we cannot have it on Friday. For, in order to infer...

    if you could transfer

It's obviously not impossible in principle, and it seems even feasible in the very distant future. It's called 'mind uploading' (there's even an article about it on Wikipedia!). I've read only about the nano-replacement method where, in piecemeal fashion and over some time, each individual...

First fully end-to-end quantum computer is a reality UPDATED

'Decidable' means that its characteristic function is total; that is, for any given sequence of values as argument, there is an effective procedure for determining whether *or not* that sequence satisfies the predicate. That is what I said when I said "...it could take longer than is physically...

First fully end-to-end quantum computer is a reality UPDATED

If this is physically possible, it would be amazing. It embodies what is known in computability theory as nondeterministic computation. It would allow the relatively fast computation of polynomial time problems and perhaps manageable (time-wise) computation of non-deterministic polynomial time...

random numbers, large sets, and distribution

It is possible in the logical sense (since space and time are finite, so not in the physical sense) to flip heads infinitely many times. Now, it is only possible because of the randomness of the event (assuming that it is random). According to a probability calculus, however, the probability...

Do you consider thought to be a 100% physical manifestation?

As philosophers might say, the mind "supervenes" on (or is "realized" by) variously different physical stuff. But it's all physical, in that sense, even if it is described in terms of "higher-order" properties - e.g. as "patterns" of physical phenomena or processes. Some believe that even...

Is MS Vista such a huge turn off that people (me) should consider Apples?

I am still running DOS 5 on a 486SLC/33 and it's completely fine. No DRM issues at all. Incidentally, what is DRM? Well, there are no security issues on my machine, and I think all of the viruses for DOS 5.0 are now curable, and nobody is writing them anymore, so my computer is pretty darn safe...

What laptop manufacturer do you like?

Asus, LG, Samsung, Sony, Lenovo (Thinkpads), and Fujitsu make some of the nicest notebooks. Gateway makes a nice affordable ultraportable (NX100X) but their int'l support, even to Canada, stinks. I don't trust Acer after my previous experience with them.

Why dont HardDrive Manufacutrs make 5 1/2" drives?

Why don't they make even larger drives that are twice as thick and have 10 platters and sit inside two 5.25" bays? Why don't they make bigger ones that sit inside 3 bays? Why don't they make them bigger than my room? Bigger than my neighborhood! The biggest! The closet!
