  1. USB 3.0 Speed Questions

I just use the "details" drop down on the Win7 file transfer window. Beyond that, Win7 resource monitor.
  2. Opinion on new rig...

I like it a lot. I think all of your component selections are high quality and desirable. The Intel SSDs are high dollar for the performance and capacity they offer but they're all I'm going to buy for the foreseeable future. Love the case. That i7-3820 (not a K) should still be good for...
  3. USB 3.0 Speed Questions

I'm seeing 70+ MB/s from my WD 2.5in external HDD. I presume this is just about the max for the HDD itself.
  4. Can someone explain SAS RAID cards and expanders?

25 is a lot of disks, what are the detailed specs on the enclosure? With that many drives and an emphasis on redundancy you will absolutely want to implement a controller that supports hot-spares and allocate ~2-4 drives to this role. I also suggest RAID 50.
  5. In need of a socket 775 motherboard.....

Thanks, my mistake. You may have prevented some disappointment right there. DIMM density needs to be compatible with the system max.
  6. How much RAM is too much? 32gb? 64gb?

8GB may be all a system needs but what if I want to virtualize seven adequate ram systems? Then I am both only using the amount of RAM deemed necessary AND justifying 64GB at the same time.
  7. In need of a socket 775 motherboard.....

See if you can find one of the P45 DDR3 boards like the Asus P5Q3 http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5Q3/ This board will help extend the life of your Q9550 by pairing it up with modern low-cost DDR3. You should obtain this board and two 4GB sticks of DDR3. The Q9550 is still...
  8. CPU fan slow to spin up

My Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard would do this too and I was using the fan at full power in the bios. It started to spin for a split second at power up, then stopped, then 10 seconds later spun at full speed then on. I assumed it was a Gigabyte thing because I've never had one before or after.
  9. XFX RMA Experience?

I've used XFX for the last few cards I've had and so has my brother. He had two fan failures and was reasonably happy with both RMA processes. For the fan issue they just sent him a full replacement heatsink with new fan attached. Did not need the broken one returned. I had an XFX 9800GT that...
  10. Intel Burn Test results normal?

I have a 3930K also and the fastest times in IBT are achieved by specifying six threads. An additional performance gain is also obtained by specifying the affinity of the benchmark process via task manager to use every other logical core. Results: i7-3930K @ 4.2GHz (100x42) 1.28 vcore IBT...
  11. Gulftown VS Bloomfield, IPC

It sounds like it's having a ton of trouble.
  12. Multi GPU and Multi Monitor

In citing 5760x1200 as the display resolution does that mean you're going to be spanning the desktop across all monitors? Start menu on display 1, tray icons on display 3 or Display 2 primary, displays 1+3 extended desktop? Will your display utilization differ for gaming? I have zero...
  13. Socket-2011 vs socket-1155 and quad-channel vs dual channel

It's possible and normal for both CPUs to access RAM in any node, but with less performance than accessing memory within the CPU's home NUMA node. Non-Uniform Memory Acess is named to describe this. The x79 based LGA2011 systems are only one NUMA node which is kind of funny since that in-turn...
  14. Tell me I made the right decision on my processor...

100% valid, however, my justification for going with the Intel "P2" segment SB-E and 32GB of ram occurred instantaneously upon discovering this information at TechEd 2012: Windows 8 Client Hyper-V http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/07/bringing-hyper-v-to-windows-8.aspx I think...
  15. Socket-2011 vs socket-1155 and quad-channel vs dual channel

1366 was also a 2S capable NUMA platform. 3/4 channel can't really be justified by the logic of "well...multi-cpu" because with that additional cpu comes another (NUMA node) memory controller, 3/4 channels, and DIMM slots. What do you think?
  16. which 2TB drive for NAS?

Agree with above, performance will be dictated by the NAS and not the drives. In this case, the best thing to do is get quiet, low power, reliable drives. I vote WD Green. The only argument for Blacks that is valid is "but five year warranty".
  17. For longevity - i5 760 or i7 860/870

Oh, for your parents? Yeah, I just built a i5-650 for my mom. Parents are rarely power users. An i5 quad core for your parents should be great and very long lived.
  18. Can I do better for ~ $900?

looks decent, although you might be able to reallocate a few bucks from the power supply. I think you'd get along just fine with a 500W corsair. As said above, let the combos work for you.
  19. Core usage app

It should be sufficient, especially if you use the process filtering function of perfmon. It's somewhat disappointing that the orange line (usage of filtered process) only appears on the composite usage graph and not the individual core usages below it, but after some thought it really doesn't...
  20. Why Desktop CPU's are 6core while xeon is 8 core.

Why does it matter? Just buy an 8-core Xeon if that is what you want.
  21. rebuilding my NAS wondering which OS to use

Although the OP is probably not using any iscsi connections and I'm not sure how effective SIS would be for a single home user... I still think this is a cool idea. But really, taking the above two features out of the equation, Storage Server wouldn't offer much more than regular Windows Server.
  22. A new overclocking "project"...I guess.

azemsiB is correct. Assuming your 1:1 memory speed statement, you're actually running your ram at DDR3-800 speeds with a 400Mhz host clock. This being said, you can achieve up to 8GHz CPU speed without OCing the ram. Did I mention I like s775 DDR3 systems?
  23. HD video (1080p) on an old, old PC

In addition to above, its an nvidia technology starting with 8 series cards. It can be used to speed up all kind of applications. The use of the technology must be built into the software you're using. The site I linked hosts a list of all software that does offer cuda support (this is where I...
  24. Possible to run Microsoft Exchange in a virtual environment in Windows 7?

Roughly the same VM performance and efficiency. I prefer the UI on virtualbox. The fact that VB is free and VMware workstation costs money makes VB the hands down winner.
  25. HD video (1080p) on an old, old PC

Just a thought, but when my media PC was a P4 and I wanted to watch 1080p movies on my TV ... It was an 8800GT, CUDA, and COREAVC codec that came through for me. http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_home_new.html http://corecodec.com/products/coreavc
  26. Tell me how to do this.

Sorry, not sure how that happened. Wrong thread.
  27. Is 1920x1080, on 15" laptop ok?

The metric you should be concerned with is pixel pitch (aka dot pitch) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_pitch 1920x1080 on 15'' will produce smaller text than you're probably used to. However, changing windows DPI and using zoom for web pages will mostly compensate for the issues.
  28. Attack of BSOD - New Build

This confusion is all caused by the fact that high performance ram like yours often requires non-standard settings to be taken advantage of. SPD is a technology that hard codes a ram modules specifications to a small chip on the module. This information tells the motherboard what settings to...
  29. Attack of BSOD - New Build

You mentioned changing the timings AND voltages. Since the timings might be what solved the problem, you can hopefully return the voltage to 1.5 from 1.65
  30. Is it worth repasting the the motherboard's northbridge and GPU from stock?

reapplying thermal paste to motherboards and GPUs is one of the computer tasks I most enjoy! Interfaces that have been in service for a while can dry out and get crumbly and need replacing. Will you notice anything? maybe, probably not, but who cares. As long as nothing breaks in the process, it...
  31. How to tell drive queue depth?

Not 100% sure vista has QDepth in resource monitor, but 7 does.
  32. Intel or AMD?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116283 G6950 is the cheapest processor for 1156 or 1366. I've confirmed it on ark.intel.com Do you propose that the cheapest intel cpu costs more? or less money?
  33. Attack of BSOD - New Build

The SPD tab is a read out of the data programmed to the memory modules. The columns in the SPD tab will always say 1.5 because SPD is always based on the standard voltage. To achieve the timings and speeds listed in any given SPD column, all you need is 1.5v You might confirm that you're still...
  34. Intel or AMD?

wow, the cheapest modern socket intel is $93? I haven't done comparisons in the low-end arena in a while and I'm shocked. Looks like AMD is your best bet here, but I wouldn't skimp on the motherboard.
  35. Small 24/7 VPN/SSH server for home

Running DDWRT on a WRT54G-TM. Yeah linux on the router is SO the way to go. I don't even bother with a VPN because I find that SSH port forwarding meets all my needs. The system is always up, quiet, low power and cheap.
  36. System upgrade thoughts DDR2 vs DDR3

I considered that very upgrade to carry my Q9300 to 8GB of DDR3 (I have 4x 1GB DDR2 Modules and have no interest in spending more money on DDR2) Ultimately I decided to put up with it and wait till I buy a full CPU/mobo/RAM drop in for my system. I estimate my cost to be ~$800. This will be a...
  37. What sort of backup strategy do corporations use?

Right now, my organization has some extreme problems with the backup process. We have almost no backups. What we are setting up over the next two months will be Microsoft System Center 2010 Data Protection manager pointed at an HP D2D appliance that will replicate itself to a second appliance...
  38. PCI RAID card slowing performance of entire machine?

I don't get how they're affecting the entire computer? My understanding is that the performance of JUST those arrays on the PCI storage sucks, no? Get this as your high end solution http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816103105 or the rosewill you posted will get the job...
