Well the bottom line is you could save yourself some dollar for a little work. There's a sticky at the top of the CPU forum, that should contain all you need. Read that, clock up that chip and then take out your girlfriend for a slap up meal with the cash you just saved :D

Is there a game that actually uses Direct X 10 to make the game look significantly better?

Not true. This rig runs Crysis/Crysis Warhead better in Vista 64 than XP, much better. It also runs every other game I have (about 30) better than XP with one exception, and that exception is GRID.

How badly do I need an aftermarket cooler?

I take your point totally, no matter how good the cards performed at launch, the fan speeds and card temperatures were shambolic. Still, that's what I got for being an early adopter and the card was dirt cheap even then. Plus, fitting the cooler was a good learning process.

:thumbsup: Good stuff! And I don't care what anybody says, it is a fact that electronics run more efficiently the cooler they are, regardless of what GPU manufacturers say their chips can withstand. The peace of mind is worth it, my 4850 is now idling at 27c and loading at 40c now...

C2D E6600 to E8500, E8600, or Q9950

The quad hands down, especially if you overclock it. The 2 duals don't offer enough improvement over what you now have for what they'd cost.

No probs. :) Get the ASUS if you end up going for a 4850, worth the extra for not having to deal with those cheeky tossers Sapphire and their ridiculous RMA fee. Don't bother with an aftermarket cooler if you get the 4870.

Denithor has linked you to 2 cards that already have aftermarket coolers. Why not take one of those? The ASUS looks the best deal to me. You don't have to mess around then.

GPU is almost always the best upgrade for a gamer, but I'd get a new board too as soon as you can afford it. 4x PCI-E is a limiting factor. But if you could overclock that CPU to about 3Ghz, that would also help. If it ws me, I'd be getting a cheap P35 board first and overclocking...

Usually, the higher the VID, the less chance of a good overclock. But not always, emphasis on the 'usually'. The VID on my chip is 1.075v, I only need 1.296v to run at 3.8. So this would prove the rule. However, you're approaching the safe voltage limit, I'd be tempted to try a little more...

Your guess would be correct, Windows seems to assume this. The system information in Windows isn't an accurate guide for that sort of thing. Use CPU-Z instead.

Anyone else playing Crysis Warhead already ?

Hmm, was hoping the performance issues would have been addressed, but it seems not. So I would expect about 15 fps at 1680 x 1050 very high settings on this rig. Think I might wait a while until graphics card technology has advanced some more.

Crysis Warhead Review

Think I might just buy the retail. I love Steam, but it isn't always mod friendly. Some of the Crysis mods were superb.

My adventure to properly cool a Visiontek HD 4850 with an Accelero S1.

I suppose I just got lucky with this chip. Some got even luckier, there's a guy on here has his at 4Ghz using about 1.28v. But 1.3v is not bad at all either, and I think it might have a little more in it. Your settings look ok to me, aside from the FSB voltage. Does that need to be at +1...

No probs. I'd say you're at the sensible max, Intel's safe spec is up to 1.36v I think. So it'd be up to you if you wanted to go any further. It won't matter if you raise MCH/FSB, it wouldn't enable you to lower the vcore. My MCH/FSB voltages are at default, I can't see any reason why...
