  1. Gunman shoots soldier in Ottawa, shots fired in Parliament

Why do we assign the "terrorist" label when a single crazy person kills some people? Running over two people with your car is hardly terrorism. It is just an ordinary case of murder and should be prosecuted as such.
  2. The AT Battlefield 4 F.A.Q., News, and Discussion thread

This game is ridiculous. I just bought Premium and started playing for the first time since launch. The weapons are all apparently super weak for me (5 shots confirmed in neck but only 50 damage?) but everyone else 1-hit kills with them (I am like level 5). I can't see anyone anywhere on the...
  3. GTX 970/980 owners thread

This launch has been ridiculous. Super high demand and low shipping volumes. I finally found the short-length Zotac 970 I wanted. But I had to pay through the nose for it. Final price: €380, or about €60 over MSRP+tax.
  4. Portable gaming alternatives to laptop? New IGPs coming?

I have a headless SFF computer I use with Steam in-home streaming to game on my ultrabook. Just make sure you have good hardware encoding in the host computer.
  5. Killing animals "humanely" for meat makes no sense

Exactly. Whether or not you treat an animal "humanely" you are still killing it in order to eat it. Just because you treated it nicely while it was alive does not make the fact that you are killing it any different. Hunters/butchers realize this and can stomach it. The average Joe...
  6. Killing animals "humanely" for meat makes no sense

The main point of the thread was to identify the hypocrisy of a certain part of the population. Let me break it down for y'all. You have Bessie in a field enjoying life with her salt lick. Joe 6-pack wants to have a barbecue. Joe goes over to the field but he can't bring himself to kill...
  7. Killing animals "humanely" for meat makes no sense

I respect hunters, butchers and vegetarians. Hunters and butchers know exactly how to go from an animal being alive to being on your plate. Vegetarians generally avoid killing/eating animals. It is the in-between people I don't get. People who expect a nice piece of meat but care about...
  8. Are you happy with what the internet has become?

If one looks around the internet today, they will see a collection of garbage the scale of which humanity has never seen before. Cat pictures, Facebook LIKE THIS buttons, Twitter, idiots who don't know how to use computers, etc. Third world people have also flooded the internet with their...
  9. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (80's cyberpunk expansion)

I bought this game in a recent Steam sale. Little did I know how terrible an experience it would be. First off, it took one hour after the download completed until I could actually get in-game. uPlay had to be installed and it kept trying to update itself. Then it said uPlay was offline, etc...
  10. Cars are a terrible use of money

Did you not read the part where I said that the purchase price of the car was not included? If you include that in the hourly cost then the $7.33 figure goes much higher. I think shared self-driving cars will solve a lot of the low utilization of private vehicles. Think of having a fleet of...
  11. Cars are a terrible use of money

I calculated the cost per hour in order to compare to Zipcar. Ideally, one could use the following: - public transit + bicycle to commute to work - Zipcar / Uber on weekends for heavy shopping and getting out of town for the day - car rentals for long trips Granted, if you are a country...
  12. Cars are a terrible use of money

I am getting sick of seeing so many cars. There is so much congestion and they are a big waste of money. They make little to no sense for most people living within 20 miles of a major urban center. Whenever I see a parking lot of cars, I think of the giant amount of capital that is being...
  13. Russia gets Crimea

Silly ignant American. UK and France together can beat Russia. Add Germany to that and it becomes domination.
  14. Russia gets Crimea

I would like to add the quote from Mitt Romney in 2012: Kind of amusing how everyone berated him for that. I admit I too had a laugh at his expense.
  15. Russia gets Crimea

I don't really care about Crimea or Ukraine tbh. Also I have not heard any other Europeans say otherwise. Really we don't want sanctions because we don't care about "losing" these countries. Even though they were never on our side to begin with.
  16. Anybody here in Übernet (DC++ hub)?

    I haven't used DC++ since I lived in a college dorm. P2P downloading in 2014 is a joke.
  17. Steel Cut Oats

I eat steel cut oats every morning for breakfast. I add a Granny Smith apple and some cinnamon.
  18. Why is it so hard to find a good laptop?

This bothers me greatly. Sub-$1000 laptops are generally pieces of shit. Terrible screens, terrible battery life, and terrible keyboard/trackpad feel. I want something similar to the rMBP but cheaper. The Dell XPS 15 costs around the same as a rMBP 15". Similarly the Dell XPS 13 costs the same...
  19. Why do Americans have terrible toilets?

I'm pretty sure in the UK I could legitimately throw a 20-pack of McNuggets in the toilet and it would flush without clogging. RE low-flow systems: why don't Americans just use the two-button toilets? One for #1 and one for #2. Saves enough water but gets the job done when you need it to.
  20. Amazon frustration free packaging.

What is frustration free packing? I have never seen this option on Amazon and I shop there all the time. Is it US only?
  21. Why do Americans have terrible toilets?

Americans eat the most in the world. I presume that means that the "output" of Americans is also larger than the rest of the world. Yet, for some reason, the toilet hole diameter in America is like half the size of Europe. I have never heard of a toilet clogging in Europe. It is damn near...
  22. [H]Titanfall just 6v6

All gaming news outlets are calling Titanfall "fresh" etc. My point was that it is neither fresh nor original.
  23. [H]Titanfall just 6v6

How is this game original at all? I was playing TDM mode with titans in Unreal Tournament 3.
  24. i5 2500k vs 3570k vs 4670k (Stock & OC)

From what I can gather, the answer is yes. I play games at 1080p and the figures earlier in the thread show < 5% difference at stock clocks.
  25. Sim City 5

I got 20 hours out of the game, and I was someone who pre-ordered for $60. I feel mighty ripped off to be honest.
  26. Am I wrong, or has the fundamental re-pricing of Steam games begun?

I don't understand people defending Steam. It is a fact that Steam now has a dominant position in PC gaming, and that Valve has decided that their store no longer needs to have the lowest prices in the industry. I'm sure going forward Steam will still be 20% or so cheaper than console games...
  27. Why don't all restaurants offer takeout?

I didn't think about the drinks, that may be it. Tips don't matter because we don't tip in Europe. In either case, it seems like 20-30% of places I call won't do takeout.
  28. Why don't all restaurants offer takeout?

Some places act like serving takeout customers is a huge pain in the ass. I would think a place could make more money on takeout people. No tables to clean, no waiting on people, and no using space. Am I wrong on this? Does serving takeout cost more or something?
  29. Any ATOTers in Delhi?

Have any suggestions for things to do/see that are not on the standard tourist list?
  30. The AT Battlefield 4 F.A.Q., News, and Discussion thread

I refused to pay full price for BF4 because I ended up paying $120 for BF3 ($60 base game + $60 premium). Only put 60 hours into BF3, so I needed to average the cost out with BF4. Luckily I just grabbed BF4 for $20. Let's hope it is good.
  31. how many miles do you drive per week?

I drive 0. I walk to work, and I take the subway if I need to go somewhere farther. Don't even own a car. My transportation costs are around $20/month.
  32. [video] girl gets pepper sprayed at McDonalds

That's incredibly racist. Are you trying to keep the black man down?
  33. [video] girl gets pepper sprayed at McDonalds

It looks like she tried to throw soda in her eyes after being sprayed?
  34. When did 20% become the new tipping standard?

Really? So people just became stupid and started tipping more to save on math? Does anyone know the time frame for the change? Was it late 90s? Early 2000s? Late 2000s?
  35. Why are fobs not used for residential homes?

What? Every building I have used fobs for has it set up where it is effectively like NFC/PayPass. Meaning you have to be within an inch of the sensor. You could not leave the pass in your pocket and unlock the door. Unless you lifted your pants up to the sensor or you are ludicrously tall.
  36. When did 20% become the new tipping standard?

We don't tip per se. Often you will round up though. So if a meal costs €18.92, you will often leave the 20 and not take the spare change.
  37. When did 20% become the new tipping standard?

    I thought Persian.
  38. Why are fobs not used for residential homes?

Imagine if a kid locks themselves out of the home. Assuming a proper server setup, the parent (from work) could remotely let the kid in. Also I would think it would be much more secure.
  39. When did 20% become the new tipping standard?

No arguing about the merits of the tipping system in this thread. I was born in the 80s and I always understood the standard tip to be 15%. Since it is percentage based, it should not need to be modified for inflation. Now I understand the standard tip in society is 20%. When did this...
  40. Why are fobs not used for residential homes?

Fobs are extremely common in workplaces. Some cars are starting to have them built in as well. Why are new residential homes still being built with metal keys like it is 1920?
