Here's a good tool for hard drives http://www.hdtune.com/ but it won't try to repair bad sectors you'll have to get the manufacturer software for that.
I believe you can disable HD Audio in the bios. Try ADVANCED -> ONBOARD DEVICE CONFIGURATION -> HD AUDIO and disable it then try runnin a prog that cause teh squeak of death
What mobo do you have? Are you running a system monitoring program like PC Alert? What kind of RAM do you have and how old is it? How many beeps are you getting?
ya! I used a toothbrush too! If there's still a thin layer of film of w/e left on it don't worry. I don't think the paste is conductive because I never soaked mine or did anything crazy like that when I got paste on it. Just get off all you can with the toothbrush and stick her in, you'll be ok...

I'd deffinitely look into upgrading the CPU. At low resolutions your CPU does most of the work but when you turn it up it's mostly on the video card. I fear your CPU puts limits on your 6800gt(not to mention a 7900gt). If you'd like to enjoy anything above 800x600 I'd recommend upgrading.
