does your mobo need a bios flash to support a 2900xt? is your psu up to snuff? are all your power and ide/sata cables plugged in firmly into the appropriate slots? quintuple check them. <g>...
can that 6 pin to 8 pin adapter handle the wattage of a 8 pin? if i understand it correctly the 6 pin delivers 75 watts and the 8 pin is supposed to give out 150 watts.
i remember seeing an adapter a while ago of two "molex" to 8 pin pci-e connector, but i can't remember where i saw it.
if you really want to know you could download everest home edition. (free) it's dated but should detect an older vid card.

the bestbuy card is a bfg oc2 which newegg doesn't offer and the bfg oc that newegg does offer is $400
