OK, I've recently read reports that AMD claims their forthcoming Barcelona quadcore is 40% faster than Cloverton (2 core2duo's linked together). Now assuming that this is true (only an assumption), which motherboards that exist today (or upcoming) will allow a drop in K8L (K10/Barcelona) cpu...
I'm basically a noob when it comes to overclocking and want to get a little more power out of this older system. I know that the CPU can go higher, but the bios has the multiplier locked (I think at 7.5) and I can't find an option in the bios to up the bus speed either.
Any old pros at...
This is for d3lt4.
I believe the following.
1. Conroe beats any AMD processor out now hands down in benchmark performance.
2. But in real world performance they will perform the same to the user for 99% of people due to modern CPU performance overkill and videocard and memory bottlenecks...
Just like you, I LOOOVE to play all my games at 640X480 resolutions. Takes me way back to the nastalgia of the 80's. LOL.
On a second note:
If you already own DDR RAM, it is worth considering skipping DDR2 altogether and just get the cheapest system that gives you the best bang for the buck...
This thread will start the brawls going but this is a serious and good question.
Conroe is out now in limited release and is going for $1,359 and it will probably be selling for far over list prices for months to come. While it is a faster chip than AMD's current lineup, when you read...
Conroe is like an awesomely fine girl at the beach, but she won't give you the time of day until you take her to a fancy restaurant and provide her with 2 diamond encrusted $1200 video cards from the future from 2008. So you will have dated this girl for 1-1.5 years and still spent boatloads of...
Due to Conroe's expected limited availability and high prices while ramping, ($1,359 at newegg), I would expect you will continue to get the best performance per dollar from an AM2 or 939 system or even a dirt cheap Pentium D805 system.
With AMD's coming price cuts, I would expect the low end...

Isn't months and months of hype grand. Now go rush out to buy that Conroe system as fast as you can, because in the end it just doesn't even matter.
Maybe they were desperately trying to beat a massive monopoly that prevented their sales from growing eventhough they had unargueably the superior product for the industry for atleast 3 years and argueably much longer. In order to create new designs you need profits and revenues to pay...
Also, keep in mind that those were new still unreleased Woodcrests against old Opterons that have been out for years........and were not tested against new Rev F Opterons and 65nm Opterons which will be out this year as well.
The true important benchmarks are Apache and 64bit based...
I don't think Conroe will be out in volumes for a while and new price cuts from AMD won't take effect until late August, I believe. Just keep that in mind because some cannot wait that long.
Ramping Woodcrest is number 1 on Intel's priority ramping list so don't expect to be able to realistically get Conroes for a long while and they most assuredly will be priced over list prices initially. Intel has said that even on Jan. 1st 2007, 75% of desktop volumes will still be netburst...
I seriously doubt that it will be late July that you can get one. It is an easy modification for the MOBO manufacturers to enable, but July is still too optimistic. Maybe September or October.
Be prepared to wait for months after Conroes official launch before you can actually get one and even then they will probably be selling at far over list prices due to lack of availability.
The reasons for this are below.
1. Conroes are huge and take up huge die space even at 65nm.
2...
