    Mini-ITX Z270 Boards

Got an msi 270 - putting it in a first time mini-itx, watercooled build. Threw it together quickly to make sure all parts work. Still have to re-do tubing and cabling, but will probably wait for Asus Z270i to show up until i fix it up. Going to see which board overclocks a 7700k better, and sell...

Is the silicone glue needed? I am planning on just using crazy glue on the four corners for the re-lid.

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

That's a great quote, it made me laugh. We need to accept that we are reaching the physical limits (that is, the limits imposed by physics) on silicon transistors (we are getting close to quantum effects dominating at smaller process sizes). The next BIG step in computing will either use...

Post your Ryzen Blender Demo Scores! (AMD clarifies Blender Benchmark Confusion, Run @ 150 Samples)

I can't post a picture, but once you open the AMD blender file, on the right side of the screen there will be a 'Sampling' drop down menu open, where you can change the number of "Samples". Change "render: 200" to "render:100"

My i7 7700k Has Arrived - Insights, Benchies & Overclocks Inside (Now With Delid!)

My rough pixel counting measurements put Kaby at 9.2 mm from top side (end with notches), versus 10.8 mm for Skylake. And ~13.8 mm from triangle side versus 14.3 mm for Skylake.

My i7 7700k Has Arrived - Insights, Benchies & Overclocks Inside (Now With Delid!)

Thanks for the pictures. I believe those are the first pictures of a Kaby Lake de-lidded anywhere. I spent a lot of time trying to find some. Looks 'almost' identical to Skylake, but hard to tell about die size... my quick image analysis with counting pixels results in ~124-125 mm^2 versus 122...

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Does anyone have a good picture of a de-lidded Kaby Lake CPU? I was thinking of ordering this - https://shop.aquacomputer.de/product_info.php?products_id=3378 - if it can match up with Kaby Lake too. I'm slowly getting all the parts together for a water-cooled Kaby Lake mini-ITX build in an...

    New Carry-on Baggage Build

Nephew had a bit more saved, so I upgraded a few components... Looking forward to building it. Hopefully I'll get him hooked on OC'ing. :) Thanks for the suggestions and advice. Here's the breakdown, total will be $30 less after MIR. BF sales seemed a bit weak in Canada this year. Still...

Running gaming PC w/o grounded outlet

Just because there are two prongs doesn't mean it isn't grounded. It's grounded, wouldn't work otherwise (or very briefly ;) . I think the problem lies elsewhere. (http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/everyday-tech/question110.htm)

@ NTMBK - I have a copy of Win 8 Pro I think I'll be able to use - need to look at license terms... I also think he uses a headset (he's into multi-player FPS) so speakers aren't needed at the moment. @Termie, mfenn: thanks for the Silverstone case idea. I'll keep an eye out for it...

    New Carry-on Baggage Build

I’m helping my 15-year old nephew out by building a computer for him (his Xmas present). He’s been saving up for a year and I want his money to go as far as possible. He has $800 saved up for it, and he’ll be coming for a visit over Xmas, so the only hard requirement is that the case has to fit...

Ivy Bridge 3570K Testing, Opinions, Results, New Bios, 4.5Ghz At 1.236v

Some points to also consider are that heat transfer is not just dependent on thermal conductivity values for materials. There are many other factors that come into play, namely temperature differential, and also clamping pressure of the heatsink to the IHS or die.

Ivy Bridge 3570K Testing, Opinions, Results, New Bios, 4.5Ghz At 1.236v

As a physicist, I gotta agree with Absolute0, Ferzerp, puppies04, etc. the IHS can only reduce the effective removal of heat generated by the die. Wikipedia has a good write up on interfacial thermal resistance which explains one aspect of it -...

Best X58 motherboard with 3 PCI slots

Okay, after looking at reviews it's down to the following two options, as they are the only 1366 boards in existence that have 3 PCI slots. Gigabyte used to make one (GA-EX58-UD4) but I can't find it for sale anywhere. ASRock X58 Supercomputer vs. ASRock X58 Deluxe3 Going with an i7 930...

Best X58 motherboard with 3 PCI slots

After doing some more searching, I've narrowed it down to the Asus P6T Professional, as I'm hoping the Xeon 5630 will work in it. I can't seem to find anything definitive on that though... Update: I decided that the Asus P6T Pro and Xeon 5630 will probably be slower than a good 1156 board and...

Best X58 motherboard with 3 PCI slots

Hi, I'm wondering what the best motherboard is for support/stability that has 3 PCI slots, which could be a combination of PCI-X or PCI? Two of the PCI slots will be used for frame-grabber cards for cameras, and the third will be for a microscope stage motor controller. I've only found 3...
