Looking for a small/inconspicuous HTPC for a living room. This will be used for web browsing and music/video streaming. Budget is ~$700. What do you guys recommend?
I'm in the market to build a server, but I want to wait for the Xeon E3-XXXX series chips and the corresponding CXXX chipset motherboards. Any idea when they're going to hit store shelves?
Thanks!
Hello I am looking for a wired router for my friend's coffee shop. This router will solely be used with a Pepwave Officepoint 400 to provide his customers with free wi-fi access. The router must be fast enough to handle a 50mbps down/50 mbps up WAN connection.
Some traffic control features...
I am setting up a verizon fios router (actiontec MI424WR) and a PePwave officepoint 400 access point.
The access point will be for public wifi access, so I want to segregate it from the rest of the network. The access point has a "router mode" which I think achieves what I want. The problem...
yeah but it's a socket 478 P4 (IMO outdated but maybe good enough for his needs). It only has 256MB of RAM so we'd have to drop 2-4GB DDR in there. And the hard drive is dead too and the board that died only has IDE.
i was thinking about replacing it with an intel D865PERL but that's at least...
my friend already has existing PTZ cameras that aren't IP. it's just that his old computer DVR's motherboard and HD died on him so we're only replacing the DVR
thanks for the info modelworks. yeah I don't need the dvr lockbox. Where can I find the rackmount kit?
For the black fin dvr, it specifies that it is raid 1. Does that mean it comes with 2x 250GB hard drives? hence the price for a 1TB upgrade is an outrageous $261. Is the OS embedded in...
thanks for the suggestions :)
IP cameras are out of the question and don't fit his needs.
This is for a business (restaurant) by the way.
Speaking of fps, what kind of frame rate would be considered "ideal?" 10 fps per cam seems a bit low.
My friend gave me an old P4 socket 478 rackmount...
I am building a video surveillance PC for a friend.
He will be running 8-12 cameras and wants to store 1 month's worth of video on it.
It must be rackmounted.
Since this is my first time dealing with a server type build, I need some input as to what's going to go into the PC.
What I...
yeah i know i tried to convince the owner.
what do you mean by standards compliant? I was thinking a netgear GS108 8 port gigabit switch? whats spanning tree?
yeah he shot me down on 2 connections for the time being but he told me he would reconsider later
okay so don't configure the actiontech as a bridge? leave it alone in normal router mode?
also since there are more POS and workstations than there are ports on the sonicwall, can I attach a...
ah okay thanks for the tip. i didn't realize the complexity of the situation and this is more than i volunteered to help him out with :)
could anyone point me in the right direction as to what kind of setup i would need to meet the PCI specs?
he actually has a sonicwall laying around somewhere. could the same thing be achieved using a sonicwall? and does the sonic wall double as a router? in other words could i set the verizon actiontec router/modem to bridge mode and use the sonic wall as the router/firewall?
Hello I am helping my friend upgrade the network at the coffee shop he owns.
He is currently experiencing connectivity issues (wifi users getting dropped and no network connectivity at the point of sale machine).
He is currently using the verizon supplied actiontec FiOS wireless router.
He...
I just sold one of my old IDE hard drives on ebay and I would like to wipe it clean before shipping it out.
The drive is connected to my computer using a simple IDE to USB converter.
I tried running DBAN from DOS but it does not detect USB drives.
Basically I need a freeware utility that...
The server will mainly be used for archiving and storing video files for a broadcast journalism class, so the data is not mission critical.
How is performance of RAID 5 compared to a single drive? And wouldn't I need 3 drives for RAID 5?
Also, is it possible to run 1 drive (for the OS) with...
I have a Dell Poweredge T110 Server. It has a 160GB HD inside which is currently being used for the OS.
I plan to turn this into a file server for a small school and I already purchased 2 1.5TB Western Digital Drives.
I would like to setup RAID 0. Should I buy an add-on controller card...
I doubt his CPU is overheating. It says "repairing disk errors" on his computer. Did it say that on yours too? Perhaps his raptor is going bad?
I think it would be annoying to select normal every time it starts up so I want to try to get rid of the message completely for him.
I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a friend's computer and it was working fine for a week but all of a sudden "Startup Repair" pops up on startup and runs for a very long time before booting into windows.
He says that this pops up each time he starts up the computer so it takes an...
Thanks for the tips. I was reading on slickdeals and fatwallet forums in the thread about the deal on the T110 and others were experiencing the same problems. I will give server 2008 a go.
Okay I just tried pressing F6 and loading drivers off a USB floppy drive but the server doesn't detect the drive. I also tried slipstreaming the SAS 5/E drivers onto the server 2003 CD but I get a blue screen error which means it's the wrong driver.
I don't know which disk controller I'm using. I entered my service tag on the dell drivers website and it gives me drivers for a SAS 5/E Adapter, SAS 5/iR Adapter, SAS 6/iR Adapter, and PERC S100/300 Adapter. I looked in device manager on my temporary server 2003 installation on the server and...
Oh okay thanks for the tip. Would I just drag and drop the driver to the floppy disk? I'm guessing you can't use the .exe driver downloaded from the dell website correct? Where would I find the SATA AHCI driver that windows can use?
Oh no problem. The only reason why I used the Dell Systems Build Utility is because the server would crash booting off the Windows Server 2003 disk because the SATA controller was set to AHCI and the Server 2003 CD lacks a driver.
Any ideas how to work around this besides changing AHCI to...
I was running the Dell Systems Build and Update Utility and I was having it "Configure Server OS Installation." I entered the date and time, selected Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 and then it prompted me to select or enter boot partition size. I dragged the slider to the max (152GB i think) and...
I just received my Dell Poweredge T110 server in the mail and I popped in the Dell SMTD 6.1.0 CD and went through the setup and prepping process for installing Server 2003 R2 x64.
Now SMTD is stuck at "Patching File System Boot Sector" and has stayed at 15% for two hours or so.
Should it...
Okay thanks for the reply. I will try taking out the memory.
theevilsharpie, I did not even get to install windows. This happens before I even get to choose which partition to install windows to
