    Dead Hard Drive (Motor)

Bear in mind with these data recovery firms you're likely to get what you pay for. You're asking for someone to take apart your currently screwed drive and reseat the platters in a new drive casing (which may require a clean room to do safely), it's not something that's going to come cheap if...

What platforms have been the most stable

Ah, I forgot I don't have the link in my sig any more. http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.aspx?rigid=33528 It has changed a little since I added it in 2006; more RAM, better graphics card and bigger hard drive, but I've never had any issues with it - I've been pretty lucky with having...

Need help with my system specs

Why wouldn't you install the larger stick of RAM? You can't squeeze life out of that PC, buy a new $400 Dell and it'll be a better system. AGP = dead S754 = dead DDR1 = dead

    PC vs Mac thread #12124154

"All he will be doing is gaming, movies, songs, and internet. He wont use the mac to its content creation abilities." Considering this, why on earth would you recommend a mac? "Better OS, better browsing" is open to massive amounts of argument, and I hope this thread doesn't blow up (your...

If you can get the Core 216 a good bit cheaper, then go for it. Otherwise, the 4870 is the better card.

    Help-A-Noob with his first build

I've used Vista Ultimate for a year and a half and I've not found any games or programs in standard use that have not worked. There is a lot of scaremongering about compatibility and drivers but I have not had any trouble at all; quite a few other forum members use Vista x64 and don't have...

How do I make my printer print from my laptop?

What way is it set up? Laptop and printer... and presumably another computer? Can't you bring the laptop over and connect it to the printer? Do you have a home network?

Well if it's able to detect and write to the drive then there can't be much else wrong with it... By the way I think the program you asked about earlier is called Slipsteam.

    New Build for Day Trading

No, no. Your CPU is more than enough. If you were to overspend in an area I'd have expected it in that and not the HD. Ditch the Raptor for a high performing large capacity drive like the WD 1TB Caviar Black instead.

    Critique my New Build

If you're going to upgrade to 22" (1920 resolution) then the 4870 1GB is a much better choice.

    New Build for Day Trading

Don't see why you're selecting a raptor or SSD for day trading, when CPU is much more important. Maybe given the current economic goings on you should invest your $2.5K in gold :P.

    Critique my New Build

I'd go for the 4870 1GB and RAM at 1.8V (I think there's G.Skill "DDR2-900" (yes 900) at 1.8v on offer on newegg at the moment).

    Help-A-Noob with his first build

Looks like a fairly good build. Why not use Vista x64 to get at all of your RAM, and turn the scheme back to Windows Classic? ;) DDR2-800 would be a better buy, it'll have headroom for a mild overclock. 4850 is fine for 1680*1050; that's what I use mine at.

1: WoW is one example that you mentioned, and I was aware of. I highlighted the line because you said "almost all". 2: UT3 has been multi-threaded since it came out; this is new to neither you nor me. I'd like some actual sources that compare performance of Crysis and a number of other games...

Please help me figure out these weird "crashes"!

You could just try running the E8400 at stock to see if the temps come back to normal; reset your CMOS to make sure all voltages come back down to normal. Why would you buy a new CPU? Is the E8400 not enough in games etc?

Use a copy of XP with SP2 on the disc, it could just be lacking SATA drivers and refusing to see the drive. If it shows up in the BIOS it's probably just that you need an XP SP2 disc.

So, 20% across both directions is 10% in each direction. 20/2 = 10 The "spread" itself is then 20% of the mid-point.

Building new system, would like some opinions please. Thank you.

FYI in most cases in the laptop configuration, the "anti-glare" shiny coating on the screens comes preapplied if you pick a higher resolution screen for your laptop. In my case, 1440*900 was unavailable without the special coating.

    Gaming system critique v. 1 x infinity

"1200-1800 IS a 20% spread." Your "20% spread" is 600 dollars out of 1800. Taking the maximum point, that's a 33% spread. So yes, I do use maths but it seems my lessons are a little more up to date. Running a lot of background apps != quad core. You know what background apps are...

Building new PC - Suggestions welcome

E8400 and E8500 are both good, I had just dropped the second one as there have been a few offers on it recently that put it very close to the E8400. The faster dual-core will be better for gaming, so it's the better place to put your money. The P5Q is a good choice. I'd personally not get the...

This isn't flaming, but you'd consider that recommending an expensive unupgradable laptop with a completely different OS to what the OP is presumably used to, is a good idea? There's nothing I can see in the OP's post that would lead me to think "ah you know he should really buy an apple".

    Gaming system critique v. 1 x infinity

Simply put: gaming = faster dual core. 2 640GB Caviars is a better purchase than a 'Raptor, as long as you're not going to RAID-0. The 4870 1GB is a better card than the GTX260, and you're also paying them to overclock the card for you when you can do that yourself. I'd definitely buy a...

Building new PC - Suggestions welcome

1: Q9300 is not a better choice for overclocking than the Q6600; the Q6600 has a higher multiplier so he won't be pushing his FSB and motherboard too hard before he can hit 3GHz unlike with the lower-multiplier Q9300. 2: Core i7 is simply out of his budget range, and he's gaming so there's no...

better to invest on a good processor OR a good motherboard?

If $400 is out of your budget range then i7 is too. Get a decent motherboard like a P45 Asus or Gigabyte right now, throw in a decent dual-core, and then drop in a Q9550 in about a year's time.
