Tricky XP install....

As long as you are hitting F8 or whatever it is on bootup for that particular unit you should be able to show which drive to boot from, which includes USB CD drives. Unless the systems is fairly old you should still be able to do so. You could also try copying the XP disc onto a USB key...

How often does YOUR Vista crash?

I went through a multitude of crashing at one point or another, but that is mainly a driver issue. I swap different brands of videocards in and out, along with sound cards testing different things and so I wipe it about once a month. :)

Symantec is supposed to release thier patch on the 17th for Vista, around the same time for McAfee. As far as I know though, that is only for the 32bit. I am not sure if 64 bit has a working beta at the moment. You can also click on your security centre in Vista and under Malware...

Do Intel Retail Edge people get to download the final vista, or will they be mailed it?

As far as we have been informed the final version will be mailed to us. It would be nice if they could email us a key and let us download it, but I will not hold my breath. It is a retail copy so it will be in the box.

Considering giving Vista a try

Yes. I have played BF2142, BF2, Everquest 2, WoW, DDO, Civ4, Age of Empires3 all on Vista 64bit. So far teh only problem has been with Civ4 saying that it wont work. But it does.

Considering giving Vista a try

They have them posted on the driver download site, both 64bit and 32bit. They both work fine, except that EAX does not work, but that is due largely in part because sound is now going to be done differently in Vista. It is hard to say if the EAX will ever work again.

Well in the experiance I have had with MS and the vendors over the last 6 months is this.... We install a new motherboard, re-tatoo the set up to match that board AS PER INSTRUCTIONS FROM MS AND VENDORS, and the system works again. But that is when using the same motherboard. If it is not...

I think you need to reread my post. On the bottom of his computer is a sticker from MS, that is his product key. I can pretty much assure you this key has never been activated. Reason why is because all the companies do is use Nortons Ghost to image over the drive with the same generic CD...

Try this... Go to your Device Manager Go to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers Uninstall Primary IDE channel. When it is finished let the system reboot and sit for a few mins to reinstal the channel. Reboot again and see how long it takes. If it does not cut down the time, run a HD check...

In that case, the system needs to be retatooed. I am not sure if you can do so with Gateway / E-Machines, but I know with HP / Compaqs they have certain steps to get the copy of XP to validate to that motherboard. But to be honest with you, I would seriously consider reinstalling anyway...

Using Dell KEY but OEM or Retail CD?

Bad luck on your part then. We have a 9 in 1 disc we use to install XP if customers have lost thier recovery discs. Most times the key will activate over the phone, if not a simple call to the MS 1-800 # gets us activated in about 5-10 mins.

Doing Windows XP Reinstall for Friend

You will need an OEM copy on the disc to use if the product key is OEM. You can usually tell if there is a manufacturer name on the sticker as well. An OEM key will not work with a retail cd and vice-versa.

How to: Vista-64 RC2 + Creative X-Fi = working! (UPDATED)

I am using build 5744, and did a clean install and then did a install of the creative drivers. No problems at all. So I would suggest to anyone doing it for the 1st time, just try them, if that does not work, then use the alternate solutions.

Can you get upgrade pricing for Windows 2000 -> Vista Home Premium?

With XP to do the clean install with the Upgrade version you just start it like you would a full version on a wiped HD. During the installation it asks for the previous Windows disc, you put it in, and it gets checked. You do not need the CD-Key. I am unsure if that is the same with Vista...

The latest drivers from Creative work just fine installing without the hassles. At least I had no problem going from a clean install, in fact they worked before restarting.

Have any luck with the X-Fi beta driver for Vista RC1?

There is a post stickied over at Creative explaining the lack of drivers, I glanced over it earlier, but the short end of it is that they are blaming Vista for changing the way PCI cards are addressed and that EAX may not be viable in Vista. Post is here...

Vista RC1 Issues

The X850XT works fine in my install. I am running 64-bit Vista 5600 build and no problems with the card. It runs BF2 fairly nice, except range is a little shorter then it used to be.
