The *Official* MSI K8NGM2-FID GeForce 6150 Motherboard Thread

I vaguely remember a few posts about that issue somewhere back in this thread. I assume you've tried draining the cmos and juggling around the ram. I also remember some posts where people tried to upgrade memory, and then the board wouldn't boot until they only booted with a single ram stick...

The *Official* MSI K8NGM2-FID GeForce 6150 Motherboard Thread

I finally had the time today to replace the five 3300uf capacitors on my K8NGM2-FID motherboard. I'm quite experienced with desoldering/soldering, but still this repair required quite a bit of time in order to do a careful and quality repair. A tip to anyone else considering this repair; the...

The *Official* MSI K8NGM2-FID GeForce 6150 Motherboard Thread

So I've had 2 & 1/2 years of excellent performance from my K8NGM2-FID... but I opened up the case today to install a larger drive, and I noticed that three of the tall capacitors near the CPU have their tops all swelled up. Looks like they could blow. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm using...

Tutorial: How to turn a Tomato firmware device in to a transparent Access point

Jack, based on the above information (and other information in the link you cited), it seems that every (or 'any', as you put it) wireless router does lend itself equally well to serve as an access point. Is this incorrect? Do you maintain that any wireless router is equally suited to serve...

    Suggestions for Wireless PCI cards

For internal PCI wireless 'g' cards, I've had the most reliable performance with any of the cards running the atheros ar5005gs (or higher) chipset. I always just use the generic atheros drivers rather than any customized versions supplied with the cards. 4.2.2.14 is my favorite version. I...

Has anyone had any trouble with Seagate's Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA drives installed in the K8NGM2-FID? I bought one from newegg, and it appeared to work ok - although it was much noisier than the Samsung 500GB SATA drive that was already installed. Over the coming days, my computer...

DSL - Will any modem work?

You will be very hard pressed to find an ADSL modem that is not also a router. But like I mentioned above, you can put the modem in bridge mode and use it with another router - provided that you can use PPPoE. If you must use PPPoA, you're pretty much forced to use the router functions of the modem.

Dumb question of the day: Buying a used cable modem.

You should ask people who have Comcrap in your area. I have heard of cable company ISPs 'locking' to the MAC of the first device that does a successful authentication on the account. I don't think it is too common though. The dd-wrt and tomato router firmwares have the option to clone another...

DSL - Will any modem work?

Yes, pretty much any modern DSL (ADSL) modem will work with every provider. The ADSL spec is up to 8 mbit/s, ADSL2 up to 12 mbit/s, ADSL2+ up to 24 mbit/s. You mainly need to know your username/password, and the method of authentication, PPPoA, PPPoE, or IP via DHCP. And also the VPI/VCI...

    Anyone heard of TP-Link

TP-Link is huge in Asia/Europe. Not so much in the US/North America. The TP-Link products I've used have been top notch. I especially like the wireless router (TL-WR641G). It is an atheros based 108mbps wireless router with lots of cool features, and has been very stable in use over the past...

    Wireless Print Server

That's true, Jack. Although the description given by Thraxen indicates that the printer he wishes to network is not situated in the same room as the router. If he can run a cable from the printer to the router, that's preferred. Although the wireless print server I referenced has worked well at...

    Wireless Print Server

The multifunction print servers I recommend are the Silex SX-2000U2 (wired), the Silex SX-2000WG (wireless) and the Iogear GMFPSU22W6 (wired). The Edimax PS-1206MFg (wireless) isn't too bad, but printing is quite a bit slower and Vista support is limited to 32bit Vista.

    Wireless Print Server

Hawking's print servers are OEM'd from Edimax, and not even Edimax's current generation - but the previous generation. They also don't have MFP support. Thraxen, would your installation be such that the wireless print server would connect wirelessly to some sort of router (which the laptop...

Best way to hide cat5 in my new apartment

Usually baseboard is able to be easily pried from the wall and put back without damage. Behind the baseboard there is likely enough space between the bottom of the wall and the floor to conceal the cable. When you leave the apt you don't have to take the baseboard off again, you can just cut the...

    Print server question

The Silex SX-2000U2 will do what you ask, provided that you use Windows and that the printer is USB. The SX-2000U2 is the only print server I recommend, and I've tried many of them. However, it is not really cost effective at around the $100-$120 range. You can buy a new network capable...

The *Official* MSI K8NGM2-FID GeForce 6150 Motherboard Thread

I was thinking of putting an opteron 185 in my K8NGM2-FID. Has anyone used the 185 in the K8NGM2-FID? I'm wondering if the BIOS specifically supports it, and specifically supports cool 'n quiet for for the 185. Specific C&Q support is required for the 185, from what I hear. I was also...

WEP Cracking - A real threat?

Do I have to reinstall XPPro when changing from AGP to PCI-E, and for going from single core to dual core?

Using XP's "repair" function is a colossal mistake if you ask me. If the hard drive(s) is/are PATA, and both the old and the new motherboard are supported by the same HAL, then just change the IDE driver to the generic XP IDE driver (while running the old motherboard). Then power down and...

    Windows Vista worth it?

It wouldn't cost much to get a video card that meets the minimum requirements for aero. I added a radeon 9600XTPro to an agp machine. The card was only $38 and runs aero fine. 64bit Vista isn't mature enough to even consider yet. I'm waiting until 64bit has rich driver support, if that ever...

91C is at least slightly toasty, but it is within spec since standalone 6xxx series video cards usually have core shutdown at 125C. What HSF are you using on the CPU? Yeah, I thought of that too. I plan to install the Swiftech heatsink the next time I take out the motherboard. I think the NB chip is ok though, at least if the nvidia monitorview utility is accurate at reporting the nForce temperature. At idle it is around 46C and it tops out around 53C.

PCI wireless card that works out of the box in Linux?

Maybe, but I get much crappier performance from ralink based cards compared to Atheros. Rplacing MB-need to format & reload XP?

Personally, I'd avoid a repair installation. It wipes out a lot. The IDE method is much preferred. In the event that you do attempt a repair installation, and if you are using any LBA48 bit IDE hard drives, be sure that your XP CD has SP1 or SP2 integrated. Using an original release version...

Recommended Atheros based wi-fi PCI cards??
