Need help picking which ATI HD3870 to get

I'd recommend the Visiontek--all the Visiontek cards come with a lifetime warranty--I just bought this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814129100 Great card--has a modified heatpipe cooler and is factory OC'd.

Crysis--XP32 vs. Vista 64--Why the Performance Difference??

Yep--that's my experience too--still trying to sort through the why of that--seems that there is some disagreement about that observation though... To get equivalent XP32 performance in Crysis, I have to turn down the textures, shadows and post-processing settings to medium to get equivalent...

That's my understanding also, but I thought when you started a game it offloaded to accomodate the game.....

Yes, I am forcing Dx9 in Vista64 for my comparison.

Crysis--XP32 vs. Vista 64--Why the Performance Difference??

Well, I've scrubbed my Vista64 install, uninstalled the ATI dirvers, cleaned the registry, reinstalled the 8.2 drivers again, etc. I've set both my XP and Vista64 options in the games to High on all video options except motion blur set to off and mouse smoothing set to on. XP is still...

Crysis--XP32 vs. Vista 64--Why the Performance Difference??

I don't think it's a bad install--my experience is based on 2 different Vista64 installs since Crysis came out--both appeared to be clean--nothing hokey in Device Manager, etc. My only guess is the Audigy 2 sound card maybe--been alot of problems with Creative's drivers under VISTA. I don't...

Crysis--XP32 vs. Vista 64--Why the Performance Difference??

    No--only the official Cat. 7.11, 7.12, 8.1, 8.2 and ATI Hotfix drivers--that's it.

Crysis--XP32 vs. Vista 64--Why the Performance Difference??

Probably would be OK for office production work, but I'm dubious about 3D gaming.

    ASRock 775Dual-VSTA

Yeah--Asrock support suggested uping the PCIE freq. to try and regain the OC, but I didn't understand that suggestion given the idea of the "Asynch" setting is to OC without disturbing the PCIE bus--I upped it to 117, then lowered it to 90, but it didn't help--still had graphics corruption no...

    ASRock 775Dual-VSTA

Thanks for the reply--I've ended up moving to a DFI Infinity 975X/G board. Some observations on the 775 Dual-VSTA: -- The Dual-VSTA worked like a champ when I was using my x800xt pe AGP card--I play alot of BF2, HL2, Stalker, etc. and it was rock solid hour after hour--not a single...

This is a very useful post--couple of questions: -- What does V-Link Speed do?--With my setup, If I set it to fast, won't boot into XP (with no other changes to the BIOS or HW) -- Since changing from an AGP card to a PCIEx card, I've had major problems with my Audigy 2 sound card in both...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

It would be good to know exactly what this setting does. I've had problems (mentioned in previous posts) with moving from an x800xt AGP card to a x1950pro PCIE video card. I too tried this suggestion and have had some success with regaining some CPU OC that I lost with the video card change...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

I received my response from Asrock support--they suggested I OC the PCIE bus to resolve the artifacting, so I bumped it up to 117, but still had artifacts. It appears that what limited success I had with the CPU OC (266 to 295) has gone away with the change from the X800XT PE AGP card to the...

There's a BIOS recovery option--I think it's enabled by defalut, so after so many tries, it reverts to a backup BIOS--assuming the flash was successful, after so many tries (by hitting the reset buttion), it should/might recover......

I've sent a note to Asrock customer support regarding the CPU overclock/async/PCIE graphics card artifact issue. Have any of the rest of you that have had this similar problem in this thread been able to resolve the siutation either on your own or with Asrock support??

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

Argh--sorry for the dup. post--anyways-- I'm reading this thread with interest because I just upgraded from an x800xt pe AGP card to a x1950pro PCIE card with my 775 DualVSTA board--exact same problem (running 2.9 BIOS). Had the CUP/FSB OC'd to 295 from 266 (E6300)--everything worked great...

    Windows Vista Games Thread

I'm running an ATI x800xt AGP card--wonder if it's an ATI vs. nvidia issue? I've tried several reinstalls, using xp compatibility mode, etc. The game starts, can see a grey splash screen and then back to the desktop--doesn't matter wheter I have the disk in or not.

    Vista Control of Hard Drives

I upgraded to Vista Home Premium a week ago from XP Home. I set it up as dual-boot with XP and Vista on separate hard drives. I have a 3rd hard drive set aside for backups, so a total of 3 IDE hard drives and 1 DVD drive--no SATA drives. What has me stumped about Vista is that after booting...

    Windows Vista Games Thread

I'm having problems getting Return to Castle Wolfenstein working (sginle or multi-player)--I'm running with Admin. rights and in XP compatibility mode, but no luck--game starts and then exits to the desktop. No problems running BF2, HL2, FarCry--has anyone else gotten RTCW to work with Vista??

    ASRock 775Dual-VSTA

Check the AGP settings in the BIOS--make sure the Adapter type is set to AGP and not PCI--it's kind of easy to miss the AGP settings unless you scroll to the bottom in the Chipset settings. There are a number of AGP settings to try, but the Adapter type is probably the most important. I also...

The BIOS database idea would be very useful--this thread convinced me to try the -775Dual VSTA board with a E6400 about a week ago and it has been an excellent upgrade. However, my practical experience with OC'ing is limited and the only thing I have tried to so far is upping the CPU...
