As a reference for you - I played about 700 hours of Oblivion on an Athlon XP 2400+, 512MB RAM, Nvidia 6200, Win XP system last year. Obviously I sacrificed a lot of outdoor eye candy but the gameplay was generally great. Turn off grass!!
I just upgraded my RAM to 2GB. I have started running...
Well, to answer the actual question - no.
For example under Windows 2K I am running a 6200 with a Primary CRT at 1024X768 and another CRT at 800x600. Lower res than yours admittedly. 32 bit colour. The 2D stuff is virtually instantaneous. The processor is an athlon XP 2400+. I have 2GB of...
I suppose you know about this......?

Look at the Lian Li A10 - and it has ports on top under a little flap.
As to your other point - I stopped putting towers on the floor years ago in my fight against dust and dirt (We don't vacuum my computer grotto much - not enough visible carpet to warrant a visit by the vacuum cleaner)...
Sorry - got to jump in here.
The certification is not about doing a job - it is about getting a job.
You need the certification to get past the agencies, get past the know-nothing suits in personnel, and to get yourself an interview with the person who actually knows something from the IT...
An official dealer for the type of laptop ypu have should be able to clear the password for you. They are deliberately made difficult to clear for obvious reasons. They are NOT like desktop PCs.
Two hard drives.
1 partiton for OS about 15Gb. Drivers, utilities and perhaps office. Personal documents and mail files.
Rest of 1st hard disk for perhaps pics, movies and music.
2nd Hard drive split down middle into 2 partitons.
1st partition for games.
2nd partition for BACKUPS...
Seriously for a moment...
Unless you just won the lottery, are seriously wealthy or really have a NEED to build the fastest, best, biggest, highest powered PC possible may I advise you to seriously think about the economics.
A PC is a set of 10 - 20 individual components.

15GB max os partition on smaller drive and use imaging s/w to make regular backups to backup partition on other drive. Reinstalling OS drivers, patches, utilities firewall, anti virus etc is a pain.
Perhaps look at different backups.
Do a full backup every couple of months and a differential every day or more realistically weekly. I wouldn't bother with incrementals as they are a pain to restore.
Based on personal experience.
Avoid PC World high street chain - miserable range of stock and expensive. I only use them in emergencies.

Many thanks ShockwaveVT, 3NF.
3NF, I hope your brain rebooted safely :)
Yeah, OK ShockwaveVT, point taken. It was a bit long. I got carried away. Sorry. :o
Thank you for taking the time to answer all those irritating little questions that have bugged me for ages. You are so right about...
Its a sin of omission not commission.
What I had worked perfectly for me so I didn't chnge it. When MS finally wound up Win 98se support I stayed with Win98se for a while but then despite my best efforts got hit with malware my security software reported but couldn't clear. I had a choice of...
Please offer help and advice to me on the subject of connecting up fans in a PC case.
(I have created this post in word and pasted it into the forum because it?s a bit long and it took me ages to put it all together)
This issue plagues me whenever I build a new PC or upgrade my old ones...
If you assemble the motherboard/processor/heatsink outside the case ensure the mobo can slide in again properly if your heatsink is a biggie - there is an annoying odd shaped little bit of metal which means the mobo tray hole is not square.
If you like tinkering with operating system software and get a kick out of it then go with Vista. If you want to USE your computer to do something productive, games, browsing whatever then the OS is simply a means to an end and in this case stick with 32bit XP.
I have been in IT for well over...
Sorry if this is a little basic,
Is TCP/IP installed properly.
Is each card configured for DHCP.
If you use manual settings can you ping the device with the DHCP server
Is DHCP turned on server side?
Does DHCP have all required ip ranges, static exclusions, etc configured
Have you...
Just built a rig with that motherboard. I ended up buying memory from Crucial and their website has a wonderful tool to help you select compatible memory. I don't overclock so I just bought their "ordinary" stuff. ct2kit12864aa80e ddr2 pc6400 2gb kit
Installed and ran immediately no issues...

You need to stop thinking: Computer = IBM PC Compatible (and all its hardware and software implications) Get into a mindset looking at the world of computers from a much bigger picture as many people in this thread have suggested.
However in the PC world...

Thanks John for your quick response. My processor is a 6600. I'll stick with the 8 pin connector - don't suppose it will do any harm (?). The power supply is well overspecced for the rig at the moment so no power worries. I'll put a molex into JPWR3. I thought that was what I was supposed to do...
I have an MSI p965 Platinum mobo an Seasonic M12 700 watt modular power supply.
I have a 24 pin cable hardwired into the power supply which connects to the motherboard 24 pin socket - no problem
I have another 8 pin cable hardwired into the power supply which seems to be for 8 pin CPU...
Having a bit of trouble understandin exactly what you want. Is it a cumulative total?
If so the only trick is to make the first data row right and copy it down. It will involve working with a dummy row with nothing in it.

A product to convert the partition to the required format maybe. Partition Magic 7.0 used to allow conversion. It also used to merge partitions.
Did you check to see if there was a hiden partition on your drive with the OEM XP install in it? Probably isn't.
Won't Acer provide an OEM CD?
For heavens sake - you are preparing a drive to use for valuable data storage or even receive an operating system that you may well use for several years. What does 40 minutes matter if it is making sure that there are no serious errors on the drive. I wouldn't object if it took hours.
I think the secret is to put enough RAM in to stop paging.
If your hard disk light is always on in your favourite app add more memory till it isn't on anymore.
I don't like to puff up my own threads but I had a thread running for a few days in the video forum called something like 8800 vs x1950xtx but yesterday somewhat unrelated to the thread title I put in a long post that might be of interest to you at the mid range level.
Cost of ownership.
not
Cost of purchase
Work out what you print (colour or b/w) and how many sheets per year.
Work out the consumables cost of those prints per year (Details on web somewhere but about 0.01 GBP per sheet laser, 0.10 per sheet quality colour inkjet, not sure about colour...
Ok, since my last post I've been doing a lot of research on this.
(Thanks to Tuteja 1986 for his input!)
All Prices in GBP
If I am going to get a cheaper card to tide me over, I felt the right price was about 130
There are a bewildering array of families of cards out right now, I went...
Isit actually possible to buy new CRT monitors anymore. If you know where to get decent new ones in the UK please tell. I'll buy a couple to keep me going for the next few years.
This is a finely balanced decision for me. I would like to go down the 8800 GTS route. However there are issues.
1) Teething problem with drivers - hopefully they will get fixed. Is there any indication that the problems are more fundamental?
2) How is the 8800GTS with older games - I have...
Thanks people,
ATI's marketing of cards seems to be a mess at present. The more I looked at ATI cards today the more confused I became. Choose any combination of "X", "XT" "XTX" "PRO" "1900" "1950" "TURBO" "Heatpipe" and "Silent" and you probably have a current ATI based video product...
I had just about decided to put one of these on a new PC I am building "Sapphire ATI RADEON X1950 XTX " when I noticed that an 880GTS was of a roughly similar price, give or take 10-15%. Depending on models examined.
I'm not prepared to pay for an 8800GTX just now.
I will probaby stick...
Interesting thread.
Does anyone know what I can USEFULLY do with about 300 games (give or take 50) dating back to 1988. Wifey has been complaining about lack of space in the garage for years. I haven't really got into ebay - would there be a market for retro games there?
When I think of...
Thanks people. I expected the answers you gave but just wanted to be sure.
On the question of RAM and factories - do they do any kind of testing at the factory. I would expect cheap stuff to be shipped out with only a few tests per batch but at £50.00 per GB I would expect each item to be...
