Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

There's a problem with the Cult of Roberts and their reliance on Chris's statements: As one dev who worked closely with Roberts put it, 'Roberts believes everything he says, no matter how tenuously connected to reality it may be.' Also considers him to be a narcissistic egomaniac. In the...

Do you like Jeremy Soule's soundtracks?

Morrowind was my favorite. Oblivion and Skyrim are just re-workings of that. Soule did a ton of work for earlier games (NWN, Icewind Dale, etc), which I enjoyed. He definitely appears to be from the John Williams camp, and has a lot of technical expertise and occasional compositional brilliance.

Shroud of the Avatar (Ultima 'reboot'?) Release 1 - December 12th-ish

I'd say game productions are much more like film productions: Large crews at work, with a ton of chances for success or failure individually. The name at the top can get far more credit or blame than is actually deserved. Garriott is more of a scatter brained idea guy. He's not a great...

Is ESO going to self destruct before it even launches?

IF the game was DaoC2, the racial/faction locks could make some sense. If you are going to try to appeal to the Elder Scrolls fanbase, you have to actually pay attention to what they want. The number of Elder Scrolls fans dwarfs the number of DaoC hardliners. It wasn't a good idea from the...

Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

Their PR and marketing has been stellar..... I think they realize that they are making about a million a month with their present scheme. Delivering something that is actually concrete will interfere with the fantasy they are selling. Best to have it as polished as possible, of course, for...

Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

Did you miss this? "you expect the worst from the person responsible for wing commander, strike commander, privateer, starlancer and freelancer? this isn't his first rodeo lol! " Several of those had troubled incubation or little input from Roberts. But they still get listed as his...

Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

Ah, the old continuing appeal to authority. Most of the programming for Wing Commander was done by someone else. Roberts had less to do with WCII as just producer, as he was heavily involved with Strike Commander (which came out years late, with over a million man hours of work jettisoned)...

YAKickStarter - Terminus 'city-builder' set on a distant, inhospitable planet

Sorry, that's just a waste of time. IF you are setting up a gaming of building outposts on planets, you should have a planet. Good, bad, tough, easy. A planet. Anything else is just obtuse. It's like those Traveller games where you'd spend an hour rolling up a character to have him die on...

"Creation science ... should be incorporated into every Biology book" in Texas

This has some interesting bits about how the clout of the Texas Education Board has just recently been shrunk. Both California and Texas had some defacto power just due to the huge numbers of books orders. At least in Texas, that appears to be lessening. Due to the underappreciation of...

Hate WASD, not happy with arrows. Any suggestions?

I just sit on the home row keys and use my ring finger for the W. When I started playing games (on someone else's computer) no one told me that they did it otherwise, so that's how it seemed natural. Plus it leaves my index finger free to hit other keys. Probably doesn't help the OP at all...

Do games piss you off more and more?

The number of new PC games I buy at release has dropped to near 0. Checking out extended reviews allows me to pinpoint the things that would really irritate me (checkpoint saving, bad console UI or port, too much QTE nonsense, etc), and avoid them. The price point where I'm willing to put up...

"Manslaughter" if your child is stillborn?

I predicted this exact situation years ago, as the logical conclusion to this particular legal position. According to this view, ANYTHING that might 'harm the baby' could end up as a legal prosecution. The wrong tea, the wrong exercise, not exactly following doctor's orders, anything...

What should we do with Gitmo?

What should we do with Gitmo?

Last I heard, they had released nearly 80% of the population there. Pretty much a tacit admittance that many weren't dangerous terrorists. Which tells me that the remaining crew has a higher likelihood of being the actual thing. They still need to come up with some sort of workable...

Lack of accountability, too late or not?

I just don't understand how even those who think it was a good idea to invade Iraq can ignore the rank incompetance of the crew who (mis-)managed it. The scale of mismanagement was frankly astounding. Given that the Wolfowitz, Feith, Perle, Rumsfeld, Bolton, Cheney, etc, group were pretty...

Drone came within 200 feet of airliner over New York at 1,750 ft

Drones are getting cheaper and cheaper; pretty soon, it will be feasible for anyone to have one. I resarched drones a little over ten years ago, and revisited it last year. The drone proliferation was astounding. Every country can get militarized drones. Many are making their own. And...

How much do you think piracy is affecting the PC Gaming market?

Sadly, the 'Pirates Excuse' was used almost verbatim by the middle level industry leeches in the past to tell us how taping was going to destroy the music industry, how videotaping was going to destroy the motion picture business, etc. Music business contracts have such forward thinking...

    Drone strike bias

No, this stems from knowing people who worked there and hearing about Tycho's actual actions. Like substituting non mil-spec materials, using badly calibrated equipment because it was too expensive to fix, actually sending out non-functioning boards in some cases. It was all about shipping...

    Drone strike bias

Better hope the circuit boards in those missles weren't made by Tycho on third shift. 'Cause they might go somewhere other than intended. Your fine tech can be seriously compromised by bad production practices and other corporate shenanigans. If drone strikes are being used based on...

    Dont smoke weird marijuana.

The 'bad stuff' examples are outliers. If cocaine caused tons of heart attacks, Hollywood would be deserted. It actually takes a relatively long time to die from a heroin overdose. Most of the 'hit up and die' examples are caused by the stuff used to cut the heroin, just another example of...

Manhunt for cop killer in Los Angeles

A while back, while doing some reading on Chief Darryl 'the Dickhead' Gates, I ran across a researcher who brought out that in the 40 something years since WWII, only one LAPD cop had ever been convicted of an excessive force murder. Had a lot of info on exactly how the excessive force...

Nice shootin', Tex!! For the others: That's a thing about democratic style elections, you don't always get your preference. The US normally prefers the corrupt banker types, because they already know how everything works. And if it has to be dictators, you just have one guy to deal with...

Saw this question on r/atheism today.

Pragmatically speaking, the church was a power base that supported the previous (fallen) regime, had their own self serving ideology, and had outside interests that diverged from those in power. Note how Putin (Mr. KGB) has gotten real tight with the Orthodox church, now that it has fallen in...
