I went ahead and just tried ICH8R with the bios being set to ACHI before installing windows. The drive formatted and installed Windows (XP pro, sp2) and rebooted a couple times fine.

The only feature I really want is the ability to plug and unplug an external SATA II hard drive at will. So I'm 90% sure I need AHCI. But I ran into a little snag. Do you set up AHCI in the bios first, or install windows first? I tried AHCI first, and didn't work. This is on a virgin...

Speaking of Gateway, I don't hear much about their monitors online. Do they use consistent cores (unlike Dell)? Are they just pretty much re-hashes of another monitor? Or maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

Personally, I think any stable DDR2 667 + is going to kick ass w/o overclocking. I'll never know for sure if it was justified, but I splurged (IMO) to high end bang-for-buck with Super Tallent. With overclocking and system demands in a year or two, I think it will be worth it. But right...

I'd assume all Nvidia 7-series or later cards support 1680x1050. Know if this is assumption is correct? Specifically, I just ordered a XFX PVT73GUGD3 GeForce 7600GT 256MB. I can't get the manual from the manufacturers site without a serial number.

What's an EASY motherboard for a first timer?

I went ASUS. Gigabyte sounded awfully nice with their high quality capacitors, but the booting/micron thing before I have the chance to update the bios (or if it ever was reset for whatever reason) worried me.

Hmmm, from the original post, E6400: The budget ram is 2.1v The midrange ram is 2.2v I just read the ASUS P5B-E maxes out at 2.2v. So does that mean only the budget choice would be able to boot up that board?

When using a 2.5" laptop drive with the Geeks tool, do you draw power from the USB, or is there some way to connect the power cord to the adaptor? That, and the two piece power supply would be the only advantages I see for the Newer Tech tool.
