yes, i'm pretty sure things are plugged correctly. if i turn off or unplug all the other computers from the hub, the router will pick up an IP. and vice versa - unplugging or turning off the router will revive internet connection for everyone else connected to the hub

hmm... ok, it can pass through the hub/switch, but NOT if the other systems are also connected. in that case, nothing works. so it still seems like i has to be one or the other. am i still doing something wrong?

i assume not too many people have this situation, but any help to make it work would be appreciated: i subscribe to cable along with an additional block of 4 IP's. therefore until now, i've never bothered with NAT or wireless, as i just used a hub/switch with the modem attached to the uplink...

could you tell me where to find the "better deals"? newegg seems to have a USB2 3.5" at $40 plus $6+ shipping, which is a bit pricey. i know you "get what you pay for" and adaptec is a brand name, but isn't there something cheaper?

yes my laptop has FW, but i often swap the drives to other computers, some of which might not have FW. although i suppose i'm willing to go FW instead if all other criteria are met.

yeah, i would, but my laptop has no eSATA connection, and i already have the seagate PATA 400GB drives which i got on sale. raw speed isn't my main concern anyway.

thanks, i just realized the specs too. anyone else have even better recommendations of their own? come to think of it, another feature i'd like is minimal screwdriver assembly, but it's not vital.

which USB 2.0 enclosures do people recommend (or at least don't warn against, since i will probably going for the less expensive offerings)? i need them to recognize these larger PATA drives . the drive will probably not be turned on 24/7, so i probably would prefer NO fan (unless REALLY quiet)...

yeah, i guess i don't gain all that much anymore these days from not using NAT. just some convenience, at the cost of some security, i think. many years back it seemed like many apps required a lot more tinkering to get it to work behind a router, but most everything these days i suppose has...

well, for windows filesharing, i always just binded it to IPX only, and disabled filesharing over TCP/IP. (see http://www.grc.com/su-bondage.htm)

heh, i've avoided migrating to wireless for the longest time, mainly because until recently i never really had the habit of using my laptop as a true "mobile" computer. also, i subscribe to my comcast cable service with the additional multiple-IP block service, so i've never had to bother with...

just got this system refurbished. installed winXP pro, but cannot find a driver for "network controller" (as listed in device manager), even though my VIA Rhine II ethernet card is recognized just fine. any clues? can't seem to figure out if anything on the drivers CD can fill in the gap.

Trying to get my PC2100 to run at CL2

For a secondary system, I got an older Epox EP-3VHA socket-370 board, with VIA Apollo Pro 266 chipset. My Tualatin processor can go at least to 143Mhz FSB and probably above, but I cannot force my RAM to even try CL2 at anything above 133FSB, even though i set the timings manually in the BIOS...
