whats with wide screen computer LCDs?

Actually...the area difference is not a small reason why companies are going toward widescreen. It results in better use of the mother substrates that the LCD panels are cut from. For example, your typical 5th generation substrate measures 1100 mm x 1300 mm...if you make traditional 19"...

Question about S-IPS technology..

TN's are cheap to make compared with the other technologies. Advantages are quick reaction times and cheaper, since they're more resilient to manufacturing errors and particles so their yields are relatively high compared with the other types. VA's (MVA, PVA, what have you) are basically TNs...

New LG L245WP-BN 24-inch wide is P-MVA, not S-IPS

Finally, LEDs coming to market.

They're probably referring to the backlight's brightness, as opposed to the overall screen brightness. Backlights are actually very, very bright. It's just that only a small amount of light makes it through the LCD portion of the screen. For example, surrounding the actual liquid crystal...

Widescreen Monitor (how to change to 4:3 ratio)
