    Synctoy doesn't really give a backup, it gives a copy. If the original is screwed so is the copy. Eliminating anything you have done.

    You really shouldn't use a DMZ, you should only open up the required ports. Your concern is valid, but it is really hard to escape the isolation of a virtual machine. If you want even more security, consider running the free version of ESXi.

    You dont need a USB sound card if you connect via RDP. I am listening to music now via RDP from a Win7 VM hsoted on ESXi running on a Dell R920.

    Have you tried via RDP? Passing through an entire USB controller is kinda overkill. If you really need to do this, what you could do is get a USB sound card and plug the speakers and just pass the USB device, NOT the port, through to the VM. But I would really just use RDP its much easier...

    You say that now, until you lose something in the middle. You really should look into Macrium reflect. Cheap, easy to use, fast, and reliable.

    While that would work for simple stuff, it wouldn't work for scheduled backups that do differentials or anything like that. Plus it would waste a ton of space.

    There is nothing wrong with having them "locked" in an image. Its all you can really do on windows, because at least on the client side, there is no such thing as versions. Macrium Reflect will allow you to mount the image as a drive and freely explore it in Windows.

    I also love DoubleDriver. It works really well. I use it for extracting and saving all drivers so that they can easily be incorporated into Windows MDT builds.

    Considering it is basically the defacto hypervisor for everything. Also, if you need any assistance fee free to ask me. But in general You should try to avoid using RDMs, they give you a bunch less fucntionality than VMDKs and there really isnt a performance gap anymore.

    You really need to learn both of those products because they are incredibly powerful. If you take a bit to learn even the free version of ESXi you should really like its feature set.

    Even with portable apps you will have issues. How often does the app save/read it's settings? Is there a open file handle against any file? It is almost impossible to sync the process itself amongst multiple devices. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    The issue starts to become the registry hive placed in HKCU which is generally only synced at logoff and in a domain scenario, and the user profile. While some folders can be redirected, you run into file locking issues in many situations.

    When you virtualize anything the application loses any visibility into the underlying disk subsystem. I have no idea what RAID any of my 10,000+ VMs is. All that matters is that you have enough IOPS and backups.

    Still, why aren't you just using folder redirection, and then just backing up the server? it doesn't really make sense to backup endpoints in a business environment.

    I use SSDs for everything except backups. All data resides on SSD :) Why would I waste 10Gb Ethernet on spinning disks. I even have a M.2 disk in an ESXi host :)

    Plus, a lot of times, you need a REALLY controller to handle SSD raid. The drives are simply too fast for the controller and it doesn't know how to handle it.
