Ah ah heck. Your advice has come too late slugg! I've already switched from Ubuntu.
And why don't you just use VLC to play stuff? Support for tons of stuff out of the box and it's easy to use.
More people should be reading Gould's stuff:

I believe Nvidia has released drivers for the 8 series but they won't be coming bundled with Ubuntu or SuSE. You'll have to download them from the nvidia site and install them in the command line.
I like PC-BSD much better than Ubuntu and Kubuntu. PC BSD is FreeBSD with some usability features layered on top. PCBSD also does better at hardware detection that Ubuntu, at least for me.
Kubuntu IS Debian. You can do a lot of Debian things and have access to the same great package manager...
GNOME is like what the user interface was in Windows 2000 and Windows NT. Simple, clean and powerful. KDE is more like the Luna theme in XP, where there's more eye candy and user friendliness. KDE is the most similar to the Windows interface. One of the reasons why GNOME has gained in so much...
That about sums it up. The installer for Ubuntu will automatically resize your Windows partition if it's taking up the whole drive, or you can set it to use the unpartitioned space.
Aye, thank god. It's kind of ridiculous in my servers though. Luckily they don't need to do that multimedia stuff. The 64-bit drivers are really incomplete when it comes to codecs.
Don't do it. Ubuntu's 64-bit is a little flaky and the benefits really aren't there yet. Stick with 32 bit. You'll enjoy better software support and performance in Ubuntu.

They goofed when they said descended from the apes though. Humans didn't evolve from apes. Humans and apes shared a common ancestor that was neither human nor ape.
This arguments falls. Lets take an example out of politics. Brown vs. Board of Education's decision that the Separate but equal doctrine established in Plessy vs. ferguson was inherently unequal. Those supreme court members by no means represented the opinion of the majority of the people in the...
What do you mean? Are you trying to say that this interoperability is just a ploy by Microsoft to get control of Linux? That's both foolish and irresponsible. Their agreement dealt with the Enterprise licenses, the ones that cost a couple of hundred of dollars. Even if Microsoft manages to slip...
My point was in saying that Linux has an influence in more places than server and desktop operating systems. You are right that Windows Server can be stable and reliable. And the NT kernel is nice enough for server purposes. And I forgot which operating system that the authoritative servers...
I was wondering for all the college students out there whether you use a desktop or a laptop and which models you recommend. I'll be off this fall so I need to get a new computer. Thanks!
SuSE is the distribution, but when Novell refers to SuSE, they mean SuSE with a bunch of Novell support that you pay maybe 500 dollars for. It's more for the enterprise folks. openSuSE is the freely available version of SuSE that you should install. It's just the SuSE that you would get from...
US wouldn't want to attack China. They've got one of the largest military forces in the world.
For a different reason, China wouldn't want to attack the US. Although they have a huge force, they lack the ability to project, or make their influence felt outside of the territories close to...
