Great tip re: using memtest first to check stability before going further. According to a check I did will RAMMon (free), the sticks are running at 800 currently, so that bodes well for this proposed overclock! So would you suggest changing the 4 CAS/RAS timing settings to those proposed by the...

Righty, so now I'm at home & can confirm my spec, it seems like potentially all 4 chips could potentially run at these settings that the guy I'm copying did: "with final F4 bios I'm doing 9 x 400 / E6600 retail cas 4-4-4-12 / 2 gb 667 @ ddr800 el cheapo ram / all on air and 100% silent CPU...

Why the 4gb threshold? Don't get me wrong - i bought the extra sticks precisely because 2gb was becoming limiting (albeit only because of firefox, thunderbird & the occasional Rhythmbox memory holes), but it interesting to hear you put a specific number on it.

Tried uninstalling netgear software, rebooting, putting the adapter in & letting it install only the driver and not the software, with windows running it. Working ok so far.

have just plugged my external HDD into a different set of USB ports, and it hasn't shown up in windows explorer. could this be due to the PCI driver not recognising the usb ports (or other devices) properly? Might this cure both usb & optical drive problems?

nice one, cheers techmanc. Ok, no upper & lower class filters. Upper device filter driver is redbook audio filter driver, lower is IMAPI kernel driver. Anyone know if this is relevant? Cheers for the tip - not installed my old version of Nero yet so i'll try this out and see how it compares.

didn't see those posts before replying. my idea did no good. sadly, nor did the upper & lower filters. There was no upper filter entry in that folder, there are upper filter entries in other folders in the class folder. Would removing these do any good/bad? I'm obviously reluctant to start...

a simple but astute solution! but sadly it didn't work. booooooo! i tried the 'add new hardware wizard' but this came to nought also. arse. ok, logical. it was working fine before i reinstalled from fresh so it's (semi) safe to assume that it's working fine and the cables are seated fine...
