I agree!!!! Keep in mind that wood compresses and you want the top to evenly compress over the entire surface - having the sides also support the tank means that support would compress differently (edge of plywood sides) than the top (face of plywood). That could lead to unanticipated stresses.

No expert here, but that should easily hold the weight. I would suggest to cover the top of the stand with the 3/4" plywood also - that will help in giving a flat surface for the tank and more even support. You don't want lateral stress on the tank due to an uneven cabinet surface. Sometimes...
