  1. [Ars] Should we be required to create an account to get drivers?

Are you suggesting that because computers today are powerful enough to minimize the impact of bloatware, we shouldn't be against bloatware? If it's software I don't want or need, I don't care if it's only using 0.1% of my CPU and memory, I want the choice of not using it. Which is exactly how...
  2. (guru3d) Want new drivers? Must use Geforce Experience to get them

NeoGAF thread here. Not too different a picture there or elsewhere: some OK with it, a few defending it, and some who realize these practices inevitably end up being the first step to something even worse once we're acclimated. I wish I could say I'm surprised there is anyone portraying...
  3. Which approach to graphics features is better for gamers

I think it's natural to cheer for new technologies and advances, from Eyefinity to PhysX to Mantle. If those people were cheering *because* they only worked on AMD GPUs, or even worse, hoped those features would *never* reach anyone outside their immediate ecosystem, then I would say the same...
  4. Which approach to graphics features is better for gamers

Insulting, disingenuous post. You've managed to turn a desire for open standards into a smokescreen to hide hurt feelings, while insisting no one actually cares about the industry, just that their side wins. That may be your reality but looking down in derision on anyone that actually cares...
  5. [techreport]AMD issues statement on R9 290X speed variability, press samples

They said they are looking into it and will report back.
  6. Spin Off: AT's Testing Methods & Uber Mode

Fair point. Amend to: "More information is always better--within reason, given the performance and target market of the tested card." ;)
  7. Spin Off: AT's Testing Methods & Uber Mode

Aside from the "claim you don't have time to review all the various modes" of a card, I agree with the basic ideas GaiaHunter mentioned: if a card has multiple modes of operation, test the top and bottom and let people extrapolate based on those. Done and done. This is assuming we ever have...
  8. Spin Off: AT's Testing Methods & Uber Mode

More information is better. We can all agree on that, right? The card has two modes, one is quieter with slower performance, the other louder for more performance. Both enabled out of the box and fully supported by the manufacturer. How hard is it to denote this, show both mode's results...
  9. Does anyone still get the AMD 7xxx bug where your monitor doesn't wake up from sleep?

If I ever forget to disable all displays but my primary (which is Display Port) and let them fall into sleep mode while in multi-monitor mode--such as when I fall asleep with more than one screen on--they won't wake back up no matter what I do. Have to hard reset. Been that way for the past...
  10. [techradar] AMD on the PS4: We gave it the hardware Nvidia couldn't

When Sony unveiled the specs just weeks ago, everyone, including top development studios, were very surprised (pleasantly so).
  11. AMD Comments on GPU Stuttering, Offers Driver Roadmap & Perspective on Benchmarking

Did you even read the article? FRAPS is mentioned some 75 times. It's entirely relevant. Totally agree with this.
  12. Tressfx: A new frontier of realism in pc gaming

Those are some damn fine screenshots.
  13. Nvidia: Not Enough Money in a PS4 GPU for us to bother

This is the viewpoint of the corporation, NOT the consumer. That you, as a consumer, would tout their line rather than that of an end-user is very unnerving. Of course it all ultimately comes down to supply and demand, but competition is vital for the consumer as it pressures companies to...
  14. Nvidia: Not Enough Money in a PS4 GPU for us to bother

Amusingly, you open with an accusation of fallacious reasoning, then put a bunch of words in his mouth and beat the strawman to death. Please pay more attention to what you're replying to. For example: This has nothing to do with the post you're attacking at all.He was responding to your...

  16. Catalyst 13.1 Out Now (New 13.2 Beta Links 3,4&5)

Is it a separate download? Driver versions 12.6 through 12.11 all have the bug...
  17. Catalyst 13.1 Out Now (New 13.2 Beta Links 3,4&5)

Shot in the dark here, but is the HDMI-Audio bug still there?
  18. AMD could be victims of Nvidia employee trade secret theft.

Certainly threads are not completely self-contained, and yes, a lot of posters on this forum show a pretty clear agenda to their posts. That said, you should still be able to address (or criticize) what a poster is saying, rather than their motives. It's possible to have an agenda and still...
  19. AMD could be victims of Nvidia employee trade secret theft.

All he did was ask if Nvidia has made a statement. Their culpability aside (there likely is none, they are not being accused of anything), Nvidia being involved in the filing itself, and connected to the defendants, is simple fact. He asked a general question. If you don't think it's worth...
  20. Asking Ryan Smith of AT if a special examination could be done?

Quoting this in its entirety because it's exactly what I was going to post. People need to stop focusing on the motives behind a request like this one. It doesn't matter if Keys or anyone hopes one architecture or another ends up looking better. The ONLY thing that matters is that such a test...
  21. Asking Ryan Smith of AT if a special examination could be done?

I don't care what your hardware preferences are, more information is good for the consumer. Period. To that end, I endorse any testing which shows how the differing technologies deliver your experience, and I also like the idea of highlighting which (if any) 3rd party tools can be used to...
  22. 24" Gaming Monitor recoomdations

Or, for about the same price: a 16:10 IPS display with Display Port and great response time (for an IPS monitor). You give up the chance to go 3D later, but I've found the extra vertical resolution of 16:10 panels--dying breed that they are--is just fantastic. Plus, although you mention not...
  23. Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

Got lucky with mine, 7970 PCB, 91.3% ASIC rating, 0.993V stock voltage. Without touching voltage I tried a quick run at 1000/1350 and just broke P8000 in 3DMark, it ran two loops fine there but did have the occasional visual hiccup in Heaven. Virtually silent the whole run, which was...
  24. GTX 660Ti Reviews

That...is a lot of context. ;) A lot of good points made on both sides, backed with actual data, reasoning, understandable assumptions under the GPU landscape back in May, and now concessions from both sides given the current state of things. Crazy how quickly things change! My favorite part...
  25. GTX 660Ti Reviews

And this is the main reason I (and I imagine others) value RS's posts so much: because he never ignores context. He always posts with the best value in mind at that moment, and is willing to actually re-evaluate when things change. There was a time the 7900 series was overpriced, hampered by...
  26. GTX 660Ti Reviews

I typed up a reply that said basically this, and got beaten...but yeah, THIS. Borderlands 2 is a nice pack-in for sure. The 660Ti is a decent performing card--better than I expected, particularly with the reduced ROPs--but the 7900 series is still the best value out there in the high-end. It...
  27. tweaktown review GTX660Ti

Agreed. I've seen RS strongly recommend any number products, based on user needs and price/performance (and never just on which company makes them)--not to mention he's the most consistent person on this board I know for backing up his opinions with links and data. Your condescending, dismissive...
  28. Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

Indeed, that was fast. Got one on the way!
  29. Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

As it happens, I will be traveling to the States from tomorrow and was hoping to have the card shipped to one of my relatives during my stay (thus avoiding the always-annoying Japanese markup, the Twin Frozr is $450 here). Here's hoping Newegg or Amazon get it back in stock in the next 7-10...
  30. Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

Just went to pull the trigger on one, and they're now out of stock.
  31. Eyefinity desktop use

I don't know if it would work in Eyefinity mode, but UltraMon is fantastic for managing a desktop across multiple displays. Personally I got fed up trying to manage my desktop in Eyefinity mode, so leave it disabled for general use and turn it on only when gaming in spanned resolutions.
  32. Radeon HD 7970 or GTX 680?

This right here, both cards are going to be solid performers but Nvidia has the clear lead at BF3, and if it's cheaper then really a no-brainer: get the 680. Or take a good look at benchmark numbers and consider 3DVagabond's suggestion on getting a 670 instead, which is a great value too.
  33. ***AMD Radeon HD7970 GHZ Edition - Official Reviews Thread***

So you admit to making the mistake but neither apologize for falsely calling someone a troll nor do you edit it out of your original post. Was there ever a time this forum was a community and not a red vs. green battleground? This is my feeling as well, in fact changing up the cooler was a...
  34. (OBR) AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz - "GPU Boost" and faked clocks!

What are you guys trying to accomplish with posts like these? The OP absolutely should have posted the source in the thread title, this could have been requested without resorting to attacking anyone. If there's something wrong with the content in a linked article, shouldn't we be...
  35. ***AMD Radeon HD7970 GHZ Edition - Official Reviews Thread***

Oh, I'm not comparing what each successive card brought over its predecessor (the 580 was an across-the-board better product, the 7970GE is simply a clock bump). Just remarking that this is AMD's turn at quickly pushing out an improved version of a card that clearly had room to improve over its...
  36. ***AMD Radeon HD7970 GHZ Edition - Official Reviews Thread***

Much like the GTX 580 was considered "what the 480 should have been" this is the kind of performance the 7900 series is capable of and really should have been launched at these levels. Hindsight and all, I suppose. Unfortunately AMD has had to make too many trade-offs to chase the 680 in the...
  37. Connect ATI Radeon to Dell Monitor

If your video card and display both natively support DisplayPort, there is NO reason NOT to use it. No adapters needed, maximum bandwidth, win/win.
  38. GPU hall of fame

Pretty much my picks, with an honorable mention for the 5850/5870.
  39. Confused about monitors... 3x1 eyefinity... need help....

I'm quoting this whole monster because it covers pretty much everything I would have said. I'll also reiterate that while 120Hz is necessary if you want to go 3D, for Eyefinity I believe the better colors and viewing angles of IPS panels are more important (and you're not going to be hitting...
  40. XFX loses lawsuit for bait n switch operation

I think such a point could/should have been negotiated, hard to say how and where this broke down. My point is the OP went from to So the power of the replacement cards was in fact relevant after all. XFX could've gone the 280s route and all would have gone more smoothly, but this was not a...
