Mac Photoshop speed test

Not so. And besides, that's not the point. My thinking was that some of the C2D community might be interested in showing the Mac community (there are plenty of G5 Speedtest results posted) that Macs (any Macs) are still playing second fiddle compared to the fastest PCs.

Who is going to buy AMD now?

I built an AMD X2 system in Nov. '05, and I will not be upgrading for 3+ years (the life cycle of all my computers is at *least* 3 years). If AMD comes off their price for the FX-60 during the next several months, I'll pop one of those in, and that will be that. Down the road, I'll buy whatever...

Right, don't buy what you want. Buy what we want you to have. If the guy wants a CRT, he should have one. Not everyone loves LCDs or wants to spend the money to acquire a good one (for photo/color critical work, for example).

Should I buy a Winmodem?

One other caveat re/ USR: their return policy sucks. I bought a new USR on ebay (hardware, not WIN) and it died during the warranty period. USR would NOT repair or replace it because I did not buy it from an "authorized" reseller. Screw USR.

Leave PC on All the Time or Turn off each night

Hard drives are also rated in start/stop cycles. Turning them on and off takes its toll as well.

please recommend a good 939 motherboad !!

I have been happy with my fanless Tyan K8E. I'm not a gamer/overclocker, but I do graphic design and photography and I hammer the piss out of a system doing memory/CPU intensive tasks. The Tyan is very solid?it just stays out of the way and lets me get my work done. It's $169 at Monarch

Yep, thas me. I have the latest BIOS for the board. The PCI standard is 2.2 for the BX, and if Chaintech has published a required standard for their soundcard I have yet to find it (all it says is PCI... big help). I will look into IRQ usage.

I dropped a Chaintech AV-710 into my wife's Abit BM6 based computer last week and it defies every effort to coax a peep out of it. Is it possible that it needs a newer PCI standard to operate than the old BX chipset provides?

Enermax Liberty 500W - blah..modular design is crap

Random Thought: I thought it was interesting that the CEOs of PC Power and Cooling and OCZ both said (in CPU magazine) modulars are inferior. The difference, of course, is that PCPC doesn't make modulars but OCZ does. Go figure.

NF4 Ultra-D wont run with 4 stick of mem

My board won't boot (won't even fire up) with 4 sticks unless I set the memory command rate to 2T in the BIOS before installing the other 2 sticks.

BIOS update saves me 10°C on CPU temp

I have a Tyan K8E with a X2 4400+. From day one, the CPU temps have been high: idle temp has been 43° and the load temp was just scary (let's just say that I've seen 62°+). I tried AS5. I tried the new 4 pipe HSF from AMD. I tried swapping the 80mm fan for a 92mm. Nothing helped. With summer...

Better fan for 1 Retail Opty Heatsink?

So you want it to move a lot of air without making any noise... I use this. While it doesn't really cool the CPU any better than the stock fan, the design allows air to blow on my VRMs and chipset heatsink. I can't hear it but I'm about half deaf. :)

Dell Billing issue

They seem to be having a number of issues. One chap at another forum had a monitor replaced. Dell never asked for the old one back and apparently never billed him for it either. Last I read, he was planning to sell it on ebay. Probably not a good move, but it does show some disarray in the book...

Best "Do it all, fix it all" bootable CD?

Hiren's boot CD apparently can't handle a system with a SCSI boot disk and/or SATA drives. All I got were Invalid Drive Specification messages. So, it looks like the Ultimate Boot CD is my only option. Which driver pack for UBCD4Win do I need to install to make *that* particular boot disk...

What is the best chipset of all time in your opinion?

My wife is still running an Abit BM6 with a Tualatin 1.2G upgrade processor under W2K. It's amazing just how competent and speedy this machine is for everyday activities. Oh, and it just does NOT crash.
