    Salvage title question

Given the age and mileage of the car (2007, 180k miles from a now defunct brand), I'm not surprised it was totaled; new body panels alone would run at least $1000-1500. The car is titled in New Jersey which doesn't have a set threshold like NY's 75%, but uses a total loss formula (I couldn't...

    Salvage title question

I briefly considered buying a $600 car that was considered a total loss by the current owner's insurance company and which he bought back from them. The damage was almost entirely cosmetic (dents on some panels, plus a large dent on the driver's door which can now only be opened from the...

Got into my first accident last night, hooray

I finally got the car back this week. It took a while, but then again, there was a lot of work that needed to be done! (plus waiting for the adjuster and the check, etc) The body work outlined in my previous post was done, plus I also paid to have some previous damage fixed (front bumper...

    who is wrenching today?

I got my car back from the body shop after almost two months, and as soon as I got home, a bit of mist and steam started coming out from the hood. Apparently that small leak in the radiator had gotten a lot larger! So, I spent about half of yesterday replacing that (plus new hoses). Definitely...

Got into my first accident last night, hooray

This is spot on. It's only about 100 feet from the gas station entrance to the exit where she was pulling out, and accelerating to ~35mph meant I was right up next to her car when she started moving into the street. Likewise, this is a good post. Given that I was moving faster than 25mph (my...

Got into my first accident last night, hooray

I'm completely expecting it to be totaled - I only paid $2500 for it four years ago. If I can get the steering fixed cheaply (but properly) and the frame's not bent, I'll buy it back and be on my merry way. Hell, I'd be doing the insurance company a favor by not sending this thing to auction (I...

Got into my first accident last night, hooray

Only because you asked! It's not exactly exciting viewing, but there are sparks flying. I haven't needed the video (yet) but I'm glad I have it just in case. The b*%^h told me that she saw my turn signal on and thought I was turning into the gas station, even though it was off before I rounded...

Got into my first accident last night, hooray

tl;dr Careless driver hits my car (caught on dashcam). Although I anticipated a nightmare, her insurance pays for the repair without any argument. I get my repaired car back looking better than when I first got it. All is well with the world. I knew it would happen sooner or later. A girl...

    Opinions on the Infiniti G37?

Fair enough, and I suppose that's a better way to go if the parents have any influence on the decision (they would rather have him driving a newer car rather than an older one). I'd have something more on the beater end of the scale at that age, although it doesn't have to be a soulless econobox!

    Opinions on the Infiniti G37?

I'm a recent college grad (graduated last year). I didn't have a car on campus and didn't really ever need one at all (I commuted by train 5 days a week), so my situation isn't the same as yours. Still, I agree with the others - hold off on getting something expensive until you can afford it...

    Winter car suggestions, 4-8k

TSX looks like the best overall option out of that list in terms of dependability/reliability/easiness to work on - which matters since any one in that price range is going to have a ton of miles. We have two 9-3's in the family, a 2003 Arc (2.0T) and 2006 Aero (v6), so it's the only one I can...

    New Wheels!

Great looking car - I'd love to pick one up in a few years. Just curious, how many miles and how much did you pay (if you don't mind)? I'm surprised to see one of these as a CPO so soon, or maybe this car has been on sale for longer than I thought.

looking for some bluetooth car audio help...

Once you pair the phone, you don't really need the button - it has the previous/next track buttons and the play/pause button (which doubles as the button to activate voice commands for dialing phone numbers). So no, if you were to control the music from your phone, you wouldn't need it...

looking for some bluetooth car audio help...

I have one of these, a Kinivo BTC450, which is probably one of the more expensive (i.e. overpriced) units at $40, although I've seen it for sale on slickdeals a few times in the past. It is not battery powered, but uses the 12v power outlet - if your car has a 12v outlet and the aux input next...

    Logitech G27 black friday deals?

Not long after posting that, I found that Amazon Warehouse Deals was selling the DFGT for just over $100, so I've got one of those on the way (thank you Prime). As long as it works properly, it should be perfect for my use. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Logitech G27 black friday deals?

I was intrigued by the recent price drops on the G27 to $199, because I haven't had a racing wheel since my very old Logitech Wingman one bit the dust many years ago. The thing that's stopping me is that the G27 appears to have a lot of issues, as do most wheels, apparently. Maybe these...

    Bodywork estimate

Well that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the reality check... I only paid $2500 for the car (plus repairs which don't count) so that's not happening unless someone backs into my car while it's parked and they pay for it :D.

    Bodywork estimate

My car had some collision repair at some point before I owned it, and the passenger doors and front fender were repainted. The paint doesn't even come close to matching the original color, which is a dark green; it is much more of a blue color. The picture below shows it pretty well: I'm sure...

After 281k miles, my Tacoma left me stranded...

I was pretty lucky a few months ago when my Saab's fuel pump failed about 50 feet down the road from my house - got about 150k miles out of it. At least they put it right under the back seats so it's easy to change. It would have been nice if it had died in the driveway, but at least it didn't...

Couple questions learning stick again *Update picked up new car

Just leave it in gear and shift into neutral as the car gets down to a very low speed. I prefer that to coasting in neutral because of engine braking & makes it easier in case I need to speed up (light changes to green).

    Ordered some tires

I've put a few thousand miles on a set of Pilot Sport A/S3s, also installed at Costco, and I find them to be very good, no real complaints. I don't drive too aggressively but they grip fine and aren't noisy to me. The only thing is that the steering response seems a bit duller than the summer...

    who is wrenching today?

Changed my oil pressure switch over the weekend. It took all day but I'm pretty sure it's stopped a significant source of oil leaking. If nothing else, there's still oil on the dipstick and the engine hasn't seized up, so it's no worse than it was before.

Shifting from R to D while still rolling backwards.

I also know someone who does this and it's probably not harming anything, but it just bugs me for me some reason. I do the same thing - start backing out in reverse, but a second or two before I want to stop reversing, I brake and put it in neutral, then after the car is completely stopped...

    Sub $10k stick shift car?

Wow, great buy! Congratulations. I can't give you any massive insight into driving stick, but try not to overthink things. When I first started to learn two years ago, I was constantly obsessing over exactly how much throttle to apply, how long to slip or let out the clutch, and most of...

which brake pad from rockauto (or elsewhere)?

Another vote for Akebonos here. I'm not an aggressive driver, but their stopping performance seems to be very good, although they bite better after being warmed up. Where they really shine is in the brake dust department, as mentioned by others in this thread. Any ceramic pads will...

    HID Headlamp Ballast Help

There was an aftermarket ballast/control unit installed on my car when I bought it. It was a cheap piece of garbage that required hacking up the factory wiring to work and it was mounted with a cable tie. Even if you could do a better job installing it, I bet most of the aftermarket stuff...

Is the HTPC dead for the guy who wants to record/watch OTA?

Us HTPC users are definitely a small group. WMC in Win7/8 works really well and given its small usage numbers, I doubt MS will keep paying to keep the guide data updated. I've never used any of the Linux solutions but I should probably start tinkering with one so I have a backup plan.

    New Printer Opinion

I like the HP Laserjet M1212nf. It's a few years old now but it's reasonably priced, has all the functions you'd need and has cheap toner replacements. You didn't mention this below, but this is also a network printer, which is great for a small office. I'm not sure about Linux compatibility...

iPad 2 won't boot even after DFU restore

I have an iPad 2 (model A1397) which was proclaimed to be dead/unfixable by an Apple store (according to the customer). It shows the low battery icon (large battery with three small red lines) and then will eventually jump to the Apple logo for a while, before switching back to the battery...

    Couple of random questions

Two things that just popped into my mind: -I recently replaced all pads and rotors and noticed that the slider pins had very little or no grease on them. What sort of grease/lubricant is recommended and where should I buy it? -I'm planning on buying new sway bar links (Moog K5345s) which have...

    Changed my cabin air filter

This was one of the first things I did when I bought my car last year. Looks like the thing hadn't been changed in years - engine air filter was six years old, so I wouldn't be surprised if this thing was about the same age.

Old phone is 2yrs old, time for an upgrade. Suggestions?

I like the Lumia 521 I bought last week (upgraded from a Galaxy Exhibit/Exhibit 2 4g). Dirt cheap (can be had for $120 new), decent specs, and overall a much nicer experience than a low end Android phone like the I one I replaced. Screen is the same resolution but larger than your old phone, but...

    TopGear Season 20 thread

I don't care if that was scripted, it was the best line in the whole show. :D Anyway, this episode was a great way to start off the season. I was surprised to see how much praise they heaped upon the Fiesta ST, but I believe them. The American version should be even better given that it has...

How do you find a good mechanic?

Check the Lancer forums and see what people there recommend. I put Akebono pads on the rear of my car and am about to put the front ones on; they are a bit on the expensive side but worth every penny IMO. Replacing brake pads is generally not a hard task; I needed to buy an odd-ball socket to...

    7-1 update...Focus Bought!

Skipping the DSG and touchscreen is a smart move - you still have Sync and manuals FTW. $19k seems like a really good deal and I'd have one over a Sonic any day of the week.

Is it cheesy to paint calipers red (or any color)?

Red might be a bit over the top, but how about black? Not as flashy but at least they would be better than dull grey.

    Headlights flicker

My car is not a Honda as pictured, but I notice a similar thing. If I turn the light switch off with the engine running (or ignition on, I suppose), the lights will sometimes flicker before going out. If I leave the light switch on and turn off the ignition, the lights go out without flickering...

Automatic gear selector hard to move

2005 Acura MDX, 86K miles. A few days ago, the gear shift started feeling a bit weird - it doesn't click into place like it used to and has a fair bit of resistance. The car is being brought to the dealer tomorrow for some recalls, and I want to know if it's safe to actually drive the car to...
