CPU upgrade ?

Your system is fine - why do you want to upgrade? Only real upgrade would be I7 - new board, new ram, new cpu - less gain than you probably think...

Overclocking and You.. Why?

28 months ago an E6600 was still pretty expensive. So I got myself an E4300 and a Tuniq Tower 120 for about 130 ?, clocked the E4300 to 3,1 GHz with stock voltages and enjoyed an inexpensive, stable and fast system since then. No problems, no crashes, works like a charm for 28 months now and...

Not guaranteed - but the 45nm process in the new E6300 is pretty solid and almost a guarantee for a good OC.

Not a bad choice - BUT!!! I have to disagree with all of the above posters! You are all refering to the OLD C2D E6300 - but there is a NEW E6300 out, sporting 2.8GHz and 2 MB Cache - which I would prefer compared to the Phenom II X2. And I am pretty sure that the original threadstarter had...

The 4850 propably won´t be much faster than your old 8800 GT... That isn´t a real upgrade.

Pentium 4 2GHz and Dual Core 1.4GHz

As a sort of comparison, I upgraded my girlfriends pc, which she uses mainly for surfing and working, from a P4 3GHz to an E2180 with 2 x 2 GHz. The new rig is a lot faster in anything she does.

Not really - I had 2GB in my rig before and didn´t see any significant increase in FPS after going to 4GB. I don´t think, you have a point here.

Worst Graphics Card Purchases

Worst: S3 864 VLB with 1MB RAM - that card was an absolute nightmare with SVGA & VESA Drivers under DOS. Best: Hercules Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB, flashed to 9700. Lasted me for 3 years and worked without any problems.

E4400 upgrade?

Did you overclock the E4400 already? My E4300 @ 3,1 GHz is a little bit faster than a friends stock E8400 - benched with same graphics card. I achieve that frequency at stock voltages, so I would give it a try, if I were you. Quad Core makes no sense for only gaming right now in my opinion.

Going from an old E4300 to a...

Yepp... My board has an FSB hole, which caused some problems at 2,5 GHz due to the 1066 FSB strap being pushed too far. I set FSB to 335 (1333 strap) and no problems anymore... I am running my E4300@3,1Ghz now for over 2 years rock solid - on a 650i SLI and stock voltages! Guess I got lucky with...

Crash while playing Crysis....

I talk out of experience with OCing my 8800 GTS 640. The card did 650/1050 stable for about a month, then started to crash now and then. I clocked it a little bit down and it is running 620/980 now for over a year without problems...

Should be your CPU. I get 11463 Marks with an E4300@3,1GHz, 2 x 1 GB DDR2-800@4-4-4-12-16, and a 8800 GTS 640@650/1000. Windows XP SP2....

New Monitor - needing new graphics card, thoughts

The 640 MB G80 benefits more if overclocked - the GPU ist just too slow as are the Shaders. Clocking mine to 650/1000 makes quite a difference and also utilizes the 320-Bit Bus more. If you give it more clocks, also the benefit of the additional memory vs. the 320 MB version becomes greater...

8800 GTS 640 Overclock

My 8800 GTS 640 A2 runs 650/1000 with stock cooling and RivaTuner for 16 months now without a problem. My case is very well ventilated with a 120mm sucking at the front, 2 x 120mm blowing at the back and a 120mm blowing backwards in the middle of the case. So it depends I suppose....

Gaming at 1280x1024

I game at 1280 x 1024 and 1600 x 1200 on a 21" Sony CRT - looks good for me and still beats every LCD I personally know regarding image quality.

Is the new ATi 4850 a good upgrade from a G80 (8800GTS)?

@modelCS118: Looks like your CPU is way too slow for both cards. For example my 3DMarks at different CPU and GPU overclocks with a 8800 GTS 640 in XP: 8250 Marks - with E4300 @ 2295 MHz 8796 Marks - with E4300 @ 3015 MHz 11463 Marks - with E4300 @ 3050 MHz AND Card overclocked to 650 MHz...

I am considering the same right now, running a 8800 GTS 640 on a 650i SLI. So I am waiting for the 4870... Another question, do you think an E4300@3,1GHz should be enough for these new cards? So far I haven´t had a reason to upgrade my CPU and still don´t see the need. EDIT: I game in 1600...

Look at the MSI Webpage, there it says the second PCI-E slot is ONLY to be used for a second graphics card for SLI.

nVidia GT200 Series Thread

NVidia is also struggling in the chipset market at the moment - which doesn´t help either. Right now crossfire is much more attractive than SLI in my opinion.

Would this card be a good upgrade?

Doom 3 or Quake 4 for example need at least 500MB Video Memory for Ultra Quality. It does matter with increasing texture size. I also game mostly in 1280 x 1024 (using a CRT) and a lot of games use more than half of my 8800 GTS´ 640 MB.
