cas 4 is fine. sure it's better to have it lower, but like gramboh said the cost increase at 6400 is crazy. besides, on chips with lower timings you often end up having to loosen them to achieve the OC you want anyway. you can also try lowering the timings manually once you get a stable OC...
Can you lower the FSB and increase the multiplier, or is it locked? If it is locked, maybe look to see if there's a BIOS update that unlocks it?
And by 3/4/12/4 timings...i assume the 12 is tras? Those seem fine...I take it you loosened them from stock, so I presume you had to in order to...
My e6400 is now stable (5 hours in orthos and counting) at 400 x 8 under 1.456V (in the BIOS, vdroop is ~0.08V). Northbridge on auto...but I previously had to set it to 1.76V to get near this FSB, so I suspect it's still up there.
RAM timings at 4-4-4-12-1T. I've never tweaked the CAS...
Ok, I basically followed the guide on page 92.
I got to 375 x 8 = 3 GHz no problem, then had to start fiddling. I've tested 7 hours orthos stable at 3 GHz, and I'm into an hour at 3.1 now. Unfortunately CPU-Z says my RAM gets taken down to 387.5 at this speed, I guess I can't get a 31:32...
Thanks Core2.
I was working on this with someone on another forum as well, tried some things and came to a conclusion.
I tried the BIOS reset you suggested, but still couldn't get a post. I played with the RAM and discovered that I could get it to post in slots 1 or 2, but not 3 or 4. No...
HEEEEEELP.
I got some mild OC's earlier, but lost them because at some point I lost the OC profiles. Was trying to get them back, and had to fight to get my RAM under control again (I've been at 2T the whole time).
I got it looking stable at stock speeds, and tried a simple overclock. 300...
nineinchnick: I haven't been able to get into windowsupdate either.... I don't know if it's something up with them today, or if it's because I was having some memory stability issues that's messed up my windows install.
Oddly enough, I have to use the *yellow* slots on my board, or I get...
