You will also want to investigate pro-level vid cards. I myself am not terribly well-versed with such cards, but I know they include features that are designed for purposes such as yours.

Either way, disabling WOL in the BIOS should still fix the problem. It's alot easier than searching through hundreds of setting options in Windows. Even if it doesn't fix it (unlikely), you'll have wasted, what, one minute?

Yes, though Windows might give you some warning about disconnecting improperly, yada, yada. There should be a little icon in the systray you can double-click to disconnect the device before turning it off.

If you have a cable box with some type of video output (composite, component, DVI, HDMI), you could plug it into a matching input on the monitor. If you only run straight coax cable, you will need some sort of intermediate tuner (VCR, PC tuner card, etc.) as extremely few monitors have tuners...

Reader won't read 4gb MS Pro Duo stick

Does your lappy read other sticks? Another possibility is that the reader simply can't handle a stick that big, though I've never heard of that preventing it from being read at all. Just an Idea.

transfering DV to avi

Are you using AV cables or USB/Firewire? I've used VirtualDub with Firewire and the audio transferred no-problem. I did have to find the appropriate codec to get everything to work, but after that, smooth sailing.
