nVidia's Problems

Ut2004 making my card act up

Personally I think that UT04 hits the GPU a bit harder than previous versions (even though it's supposed to be the 03 engine). I had to back my OC off a bit w/ a 9800p. Maybe they added a few DX9 features that are working the processor a bit more, don't know. Funny part is that it runs smoother...

Does FAr cRy game require a 256 mb card?

I'm not 100% sure if the v-card will help. It seems to me that the game is a memory hog, it doesn't seem to realease anything from RAM. If I play the demo over a few times I'll end up with an "almost out of virtual memory" message (512mb actual, 1gb swap). If I run through the game once I won't...

Overclocking a 2500 in a A7N8X Deluxe?

Exactly, past week 42(ish) there is no way to unlock them. If you can document how to do it then please head on over to OverClockers.Com & explain it. They pretty much disected the chip trying & I'm sure they'd love to hear about how to do it.

Where are the Quake3 Areno Demo results?

Simple and easy way: 1. Drop down the console (~) 2. Type in "timedemo 1" (w/o the quotes) 3. Run any demo under the Demo menu 4. Drop down the console & the last line will say the FPS

xp2500barton.....what stuff to buy!

Generally a good thing, can raise the FSB w/o moving your PCI bus into danger zones - corrupting you HDD for example. Just want to run it @ 3200+ speeds? Shuttle AN35N-U, $65 - will get you to 200, but not much beyond. Max OC? DFI Ultras or the Abit NF7-?

Looking into this 9800pro. Need some input please.

5900se(xt) 4 pipes? or 8?

Exactly, not an 8 pipe card by any definition I can imagine. Also, the NV3x core can do either 2 textured unite OR 1 FP unit per clock (it can't do 1 text & 1 fp /clock either - it's either/or). It is in no way shape or form an "8" pipe card.

To the best of anyone's knowledge the BFG is just one heck of a deal. Check the "post your BFG OC" thread, not too shabby! BFG OC's Edit Note: One of the priciples of BFG was a Quake Champion - ya think he doesn't know about gaming? ;)

nvidia 5900... ultra, nu, or se?

There are some general 5900 ratings, but they differ by company - 5900XT/SE - Usually runs 400/700 (2.8ns RAM)..BUT...RAM timings are more agressive to compensate 5900nu - Can run from 400/700 to 400/805 depending on manufacturer. As a rule 800 means 2.2ns RAM & lower means 2.8ns RAM. 5900 U...

I'd vote for the 5900 as being the best value. Default speeds are 400/800(ish). This generally means 2.2ns ram & that the card will hit Ultra or greater speeds. At present the 256mb of RAM doesn't really get you anything. The BFG 5900 is tough to beat at around $175.

OC? Coolbits, found here: OverClocker's - AU If you'll check the temp limits in the advanced properties you'll see you're nowhere near what Nvidia deems is too much. It's my understanding that the chip can go beyond CPU limits before it gets critical. Temps in the 50's aren't unusual.

Can I use an Alpha PAL8045 with an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 400 FSB CPU

As long as the MB will accept it'll work fine. Ran the 8045/PL1A w/ a 2500+ @ 3200+ = 41* idle/46* load

Kyro2 replacement

Since I'm in the same situation I thought I'd toss my in my .02. You might want to consider keeping the Kyro for a while, as you know it runs all current games just fine. The next gen such as Doom III will need an upgrade but by I'm hoping the GF4 Ti4200 will be cheap. Might work for you too?

I believe that 60 is real close or at the limit for a t-bird. You may want to look at improving the air flow in your case? Do you have an idea of the case temp? I run in the low 40's (42-43) under full load with a 1.35gig Tbird using an Alpha 8045. I also have 2x120mm case fans so the case temp...

Looking for a large case with 120 mm fans

What affect does memory timings have on FSB OCing potential?

That's what I love about these boards, you read something & think "hey, why can't I do that?" - lol - I have to remind myself from time to time YMMV (your milage may vary). The best a KT133 board can generally do is 110mhz, my former board (Abit KT-7 Raid) wouldn't do more than 105 not matter...

Turning on a computer over the net???

I just thought I'd add a bit to the discussion. WOL (wake on lan) functions as described but you will need a WOL compatible NIC & a WOL motherboard (and a cable to connect them). Most NICs are WOL & include the cable, if you need to get a new one (I did) those such as the D-link DFE-503-tx+ work...

In or out is an age old arguement, it seems that most of the HS you mentioned do slightly better blowing in. I have mine sucking becuase air is sucked off the HS and out the back by a fan next to the HSF. If you can tolerate the noise then go for it, the faster & the more cfm the better it will...
