Linux Shell Code Standard I/O Concurrency/Exclusivity

Thanks for the reply, Markbnj. You're absolutely correct, standard I/O--/dev/stdout, /dev/stdin, and /dev/stderr are symbolic links to /proc/self/fd/N, where N is 0 for stdin, 1 for stdout, and 2 for stderr. /proc/self is a symbolic link to the current running process, which allows the process...

Linux Shell Code Standard I/O Concurrency/Exclusivity

I'm writing a web front end to a PKI system for our users. The web front end will generate a private key and certificate signing request(CSR) that will be uploaded to a Certificate Authority for signing. I'm using the PHP shell_exec command: $output = shell_exec("openssl req -nodes -newkey...

    weird aftermarket car stereo issue

Yup! Double check the wiring the other day, and will probably triple check it tomorrow. I'm thinking about just giving up and buy another head unit. I had a Sony five years ago and it worked well.

    weird aftermarket car stereo issue

The fader is at 00(F06-00-R06). I can balance using the fader, but it seems like all the bass are pumped to the rear speakers. The front sounds like cheap speakers with no bass, but the front and rear are the same speaker model. I think it's the head unit, but there is no setting that makes a...

    Odometer kinda broken.

from what I read online, it seems that the odometer information is not a generic OBD II parameter, so you will have to find the scan tool that works with your friend's Mazda Protege.

    weird aftermarket car stereo issue

Have some more time to look at it today and I've reached the same conclusion with most of you that JVC sends more power to the rear speakers--and more bass too. None of the settings matter and I checked all the connections--again. Oh well...too late to return it now since I bought it over two...

    weird aftermarket car stereo issue

hmmm...I'll try that. But what blows my mind is that the speaker wires came from the same spool. I'm going to re-crimp all the speaker connections too!

    weird aftermarket car stereo issue

So I finally decided to put the JVC KD-R200 head unit that I bought brand new two years ago into my '87 BMW 325e. I pair the head unit up with two pairs of Clarion SRG1621R 6.5" speakers. I ran new speaker wires into all four speakers--and they are from one spool(14 gauge). The issue that I'm...

hear knocking and grinding when in nuetral.

2.2 liter engine on what car? If you hear a growling noise without pushing in the clutch, then it's probable the input shaft bearing. Check you engine mounts and transmission mounts.

    old tire safety

it's manufactured in the 41st month of 2001. So I guess I'll get new tires before doing the suspension work.
  11. C

    old tire safety

the tires on my '87 BMW 325e have many tiny cracks along the side walls so I'm guessing that they are old. They still hold air, though, and the threads are still good. I've heard somewhere that tires older than two years old are not safe, but I haven't found any concrete studies of this...

    What happened here? Head gasket?

hmmm....coolant in the oil is not good. After the car has cool, is there still pressure in the radiator? If so, your head gasket might be bad. I don't see why a bad intake manifold gasket would result in coolant being in the oil. Anyway, to be sure it's a bad head gasket, NAPA has this test...

So....you don't think these two are related somehow? I'm 99.999999% certain that you have a major short somewhere near the alternator output.

    Propane for your A/C

hmmm....interesting....I haven't heard of car exploding due to propane being used as a refrigerant, but I haven't heard of any car that use propane either. There are many sources of ignition in the car--especially old cars: switches(ignition switch, turn signal, wiper, fan, power windows, power...

double clutching doesn't seem to make a difference

I agree, and the clutch is a lot easier to replace than the synchros. I found a great article here: http://www.car-forums.com/talk/showthread.php?t=3993 Apparently, I was doing it wrong. I have to get the rpm up what it should be if the car were going at that speed in that lower gear...

double clutching doesn't seem to make a difference

Yeah...isn't that the purpose of double clutching--to get the input and output shafts rotating nearly the same speed so your synchros don't have to work as hard? I also translate that to mean easier/quicker shifting into the lower gear because you don't have to wait for the synchro to spin the...

double clutching doesn't seem to make a difference

I heard that double clutching is supposed to reduce wear on your manual transmission's synchros and make it easier to slide into gear on downshifts, so I practice doing it on my '87 bmw 325e with 225k miles on it. I figure with that many miles, the synchros could use any kind of break you give...

Am I an idiot to buy this car? Saab

 this. According to wikipedia, it's related to the Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in the US so I wouldn't be worried too much about parts availability.

    Its always the little things...

where do I start with the '87 bmw 325e...let's see: - The whole suspension gotta go: front struts, rear shocks, control arms, tie-rod ends, and whatever else I found is broken or worn out. I estimated the whole thing will cost me at least $300 for parts. - The whole car needs to be repainted -...

Well...in some areas, there is no base coat or primer left, but the metal is shiny and not rusted.

soda blasting--anybody worked with it before?

The paint is still in relatively good condition. There are a few faded spots, but no rusts. I was asking about rust because, if I buy the system, I want to do more things with it too than just my bmw--like removing rusts and old paint from my iron gate.

soda blasting--anybody worked with it before?

I want to eventually repaint my bmw 325e, and I've been looking at paint removal process. Soda blasting sounds very promising, but I heard something about it doesn't remove rust. There are a lot of info on the web, but I want to know if anybody here have any real experiences working with soda...

Car noob: want to be a car hobbyist. Where to start?

A 3-ton floor jack should be plenty. Get an 8-inch C-clamp for doing the brakes(pushing the calipers back in). I think you're good to go. Speaking from personal experience, don't buy anything else until you run into a situation that you need it. I found myself wasting money a lot of money...

Brake noise when stopped (light pressure on brake pedal)...

sounds like it could be the booster leaking vacuum. Does your engine rpm change when you feather the pedal? If not, I'm thinking it's just the brake pedal linkage needs oiling.

Brake noise when stopped (light pressure on brake pedal)...

wait..you're hearing the noise AFTER you had stopped? Might be an old/loose belt or something.

Car noob: want to be a car hobbyist. Where to start?

I should have added the words: generally speaking. I know the later BMW engine bays are very cramped too. Maybe he could go for a small truck, like late 80s early 90s toyota, nissan, ford, or chevy. Those have plenty of space to work on and parts are cheap.

Car noob: want to be a car hobbyist. Where to start?

For tools, I would go with a Sears Craftsman Mechanics tool set(154pc is onsale right now for $99). That should cover about ~60% of your tool needs. A 2ft long metal pipe is also necessary. You will also need jackstands, floor jack, different types of pliers, etc... Ebay is a good place...

Who has the most expensive car here? The cheapest(That works perfectly)?

does your second car count? I got an '87 BMW 325e for $500. But I had since put in a new clutch kit, timing belt, water pump, and a bunch of small little stuff. Did all the work myself, though :)

    why I love Captain Slow

to take his words verbatim, you need to wait, oh, maybe another 500 years or so--give or take a few centuries. But in another point-of-view, his view is already here. Most car people have at least two cars, a hobby car and a reliable, boring daily driver.

    2003 Mazda MPV TCS/TCS Off/ABS/eBrake lights on

ABS fuse can blow easily to protect the ABS computer. I know it is in my very old e30 BMW. It has a circuit that blows the fuse if the car battery is connected the wrong way. But in your case, check the brake fluid level first. It could be low and trigger the warning light.

    AC Issues in Mazda 6

you're either low or out of refrigerant. The whining sound comes from the A/C compressor running on low or no refrigerant. A/C compressors take a lot of power from the engine so that's why you notice a power loss when the A/C is on. The variation in fan speed could mean that the alternator is...

    Replacing rear brakes

I'm assuming that you have 4-wheel disc brakes. In which case, it should be just like the front and most other disc brake set up. Remove the lower pin bolt, flip the caliper assembly up, remove the pads, use a C-clamp to push the piston back so the new pads will fit, slap on the new pads, drop...

what's the best way to fix this:

The car: 2009 Pontiac G8 GT I f--ed up the underside of my bumper cover this past weekend. Not sure how I'm going to fix it. Thinking about two thin metal plates--top and bottom, plenty of JB Weld in between, and some metal clips holding everything together. Any ideas or advice?
