    Time for New Lappy

    October is a ways away?

What chipset are the current macbooks?

Tiger is a superb OS, and is in its 10.4.9 form, so just about all major issues (if there were any) have been addressed. I think you'll be happy with a MacBook if you purchase one :).

Trying to decide on a laptop

I echo the MacBook suggestion, and recommend the $1299 version, which gets you a DL DVD burner, 120 GB HD and 2.1 C2D. The integrated video is apparently better now than it once was, so that's something to keep in mind as well.

    Best place to get XP?

I need to get a copy of XP to use with my Mac. What's the best place to get it from?

    Why all the Apple secrecy?

That was actually seven years ago now, believe it or not.

    Why all the Apple secrecy?

Apple does tend to be secretive, but they sure have talked up the iPhone over the past month.

    Time for New Lappy

Virtual PC is now extinct. Boot Camp allows for you to run Windows natively. Parallels allows for virtualization, rather than emulation. Thanks to your school's stupid requirements, however, I'd say getting a new PC laptop is probably your best bet.

    Apple Safari

Of course. Safari 3.0 will be released with Leopard in October, and will be available to both Windows and Mac users.

    Apple Safari

Do you really wonder if a beta product will get some fixes to it?

    apples shipping blows exceptionally hard

As mentioned, it's a new revision, and everyone's new MBP is going to be taking awhile.

    Installing Leopard on a PC

Well, it's illegal, if you consider that to be a problem. It may also be highly unstable. Finally, a $1099 MacBook gets you a great package (except the lack of a dedicated video card). 2.0 C2D, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD.

    Need laptop recommendations

Actually, I think you're thinking of Rosetta, which is an Intel Mac application under the hood of Tiger that emulates PowerPC-based applications. Anything that's not univeral or designed specifically for Intel Macs requires emulation (Office for Mac 2004 is a big example of this, along with...

    New MacBook Pros released

Well, the 2.4 comes with a 256 MB 8600 nVidia card, and a 160 HD. both the 2.2 and 2.4 come with 2 GBs of RAM now, so that's no longer a reason to get the higher of the two. If you can, I'd wait a couple months for the refurbs to start coming along, and then grab a 2.4 for the price of a...

Anyone who installs OS X on a PC is technically committing a crime.

The Official: 'What Mac Do You Own' Thread

Thank you for the welcome :). The G3 was basically retired in May of 2003, when the iBooks got the G4. Previously, both the iMacs and PowerMacs had been upgraded to it (I think the PowerMacs got it as early as 2000 or 2001). I believe OS X was shipped in conjunction with OS 9 until...

Oh, I'm sure all of what you're saying there is true. It was just on a G3 iBook, no doubt, rather than a G4.

OS 9 is very long since gone. 10.4 is the last version of OS X to include Classic (which is what OS 9 is called within the context of OS X), and Leopard won't have it at all. You also need to have a PowerPC Mac to run Classic, as it doesn't run on Intel Macs. I'm pretty sure you couldn't...

    New MacBook Pros released

I have to take exception to that, because OS X updates don't work like Windows updates. Tiger was already in 10.4.4 in the fall/winter of 2005, and it was released in April of 2005. I'm pretty sure the first update came within a month or so of its release. I expect 10.5 to be relatively...

    Safari for Windows

For whatever reason, FireFox has proven to be a bit slow under OS X. Safari is definitely the faster browser, unless FF has improved recently.

The Official: 'What Mac Do You Own' Thread

I own a 15'' Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (2nd Revision, October 2006). 2.33 C2D 2 GB RAM 120 GB HD 256 Radeon X1600 (this particular MBP's big weakness) I love my MBP, and despite the recent upgrade, I'm happy I purchased it when I did just over two months ago as a refurb. It was obviously a...
