What chipset are the current macbooks?

Tiger is a superb OS, and is in its 10.4.9 form, so just about all major issues (if there were any) have been addressed. I think you'll be happy with a MacBook if you purchase one :).

Trying to decide on a laptop

I echo the MacBook suggestion, and recommend the $1299 version, which gets you a DL DVD burner, 120 GB HD and 2.1 C2D. The integrated video is apparently better now than it once was, so that's something to keep in mind as well.

Time for New Lappy

Virtual PC is now extinct. Boot Camp allows for you to run Windows natively. Parallels allows for virtualization, rather than emulation. Thanks to your school's stupid requirements, however, I'd say getting a new PC laptop is probably your best bet.

Installing Leopard on a PC

Well, it's illegal, if you consider that to be a problem. It may also be highly unstable. Finally, a $1099 MacBook gets you a great package (except the lack of a dedicated video card). 2.0 C2D, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD.

Well, the 2.4 comes with a 256 MB 8600 nVidia card, and a 160 HD. both the 2.2 and 2.4 come with 2 GBs of RAM now, so that's no longer a reason to get the higher of the two. If you can, I'd wait a couple months for the refurbs to start coming along, and then grab a 2.4 for the price of a...

OS 9 is very long since gone. 10.4 is the last version of OS X to include Classic (which is what OS 9 is called within the context of OS X), and Leopard won't have it at all. You also need to have a PowerPC Mac to run Classic, as it doesn't run on Intel Macs. I'm pretty sure you couldn't...

I have to take exception to that, because OS X updates don't work like Windows updates. Tiger was already in 10.4.4 in the fall/winter of 2005, and it was released in April of 2005. I'm pretty sure the first update came within a month or so of its release. I expect 10.5 to be relatively...

Safari for Windows

For whatever reason, FireFox has proven to be a bit slow under OS X. Safari is definitely the faster browser, unless FF has improved recently.
