  1. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

Yeah I got the FLIR back when we first moved in. Works quite well finding hot/cold spots around vents, doors, (electrical panels lol) outlets, etc. I’ll take it to my buddies places and let ‘em see so they can take appropriate action if they want.
  2. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

Thx for the offer NB. Positive comments are getting rare in this thread.
  3. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

Update : electrician is coming next week to replace the sub along with the ‘feeder’ wire from the main panel. Thankfully the main panel in the basement is pretty much directly below the old box.
  4. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

Correct. The biggest panel was installed a couple years ago as part of a reno by the previous owner in 2019 or 2020. As an aside - I removed the 'block' fuse for an inspection. Yikes! The thing was fried! Still waiting on callbacks from electricians....go figure. The 2nd panel was made into...
  5. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

One thing I didn't think of yesterday - why didn't the breaker on the 'main' fusebox in the basement trip? There's a breaker that clearly says 'old service panel laundry room' on it (although I haven't verified that's what it's actually connected to)
  6. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

For some reason (prolly cause I wasn't thinking straight - like I ever do? lol) that thought didn't even come to me....smh. Thank you BoomerD for the information. I'll be calling an electrician tomorrow to get it taken care of!
  7. Ooof!! - Burning smell.......wtf?!

So there I am, minding my own business. We have a crew out replacing the garage floor concrete (It has/had a huge crack in it and had sunk about 1". Anyhow, I'm watching Youtube when I smell a faint burning smell. Could it be the garage peeps machinery? I ask one of the dudes. Nope - they're...
  8. Brick Fireplace - Mantle work

The top brick surface of our FP was uneven as well, but not nearly as much. I used a chisel and took off the mortar, which flaked right off, then used some sort of a carbide stone manual brick ‘sander’ thing to finish smoothing/leveling. It worked quite well. Of course our mantle is...
  9. What to use to fill this in?

Thinset it is then! Thx for the advice [emoji106]
  10. 3 year old paint is already flaking off. Builder grade is terrible. Need to redo it before the scalding hot summer.

You’re right my bad. Something is getting in there and it NEEDS to be able to drain away
  11. Recessed lighting and blown in insulation

It probably would’ve shut off automatically. Then again I’d rather not have found out.
  12. Stihl KombiSystem

Of course you need to already have a straight shaft Stihl. I bought the hedge trimmer and pole saw attachments. No problems so far (over a year). Of course YMMV Edit: I HATE when folks use the words 'hack' and 'trick' in their videos, but it is what it is *shrugs*
  13. Recessed lighting and blown in insulation

We had blown-in insulation at our old business. It was an attic space with a pulldown ladder thingee to access. We also had recessed lighting (can lights I think they're called). The workers who put the insulation in did NOT clear any of it around the can lights. A tremendous amount of heat...
  14. 3 year old paint is already flaking off. Builder grade is terrible. Need to redo it before the scalding hot summer.

Water is def getting in somehow. I'd tackle the source of the leak first. Betcha that whole thin strip on the top has little/no sealant/goo/whatever between it and the vertical siding behind it. Been there, done that when we had our new spec house built :( At any rate, get to it early or the...
  15. What to use to fill this in?

Hey hey everyone! Long time no visit. Was doing the 'hurry up and wait' song and dance for a vid card for almost a year....so there's that...... Anyhow, after over a year, we're finally tackling (or getting tackled by?) the fireplace. I'll include pics because they're better than words and...
  16. Looking for help with clogged kitchen sink with disposal

OMG I hate when a seemingly 10 minute job turns into a week-long nightmare.........well....which is pretty much every time lol
  17. Anybody know fluorescent light fixtures?

I reckon it can be a tossup: - replace starter - it works - hooray! It doesn't work - can u return it? - replace tube - it works - also hooray! Of course sourcing one may be difficult. Is it worth it to find one? - check the internals of the fixture. No clue how to do that. Even if I did I...
  18. 3-in-1 any good?

Definitely detach the opener from the door (should be a pull handle of sorts. I didn't know what it was on ours until I tried it lol) and manually put the door up and down. You'll know quick enough if it's an alignment issue if it sticks. Good luck!
  19. Anybody know fluorescent light fixtures?

Pics would help a little. I'm thinking what you called the 'ballast' is a little circular thing about the size of a thumb and screws/pops into the fixture somehow. can you get a replacement 'fixture' for it? Probably so, but I'm guessing it's a pain to replace. To me, it's gonna suck either...
  20. How to check if ground is sloped away?

Thank you for the how to [emoji106] I put stakes on each end of the area that’s going to be covered/decked. I think I added photos as well. Looks like I need to raise the string not even 1:8 inch to make it level, prolly less than that Edit: did the same thing on the far side by the back...
  21. How to check if ground is sloped away?

Hey hey folks! For some reason how to do this is eluding me lol. It’s prolly one of those things that’s so easy it’s hard [emoji2371] Anyhow, now that the kitchen is (mostly.....like 95%) done, next is the back porch/whatever it’s called area. We’re Fixin to put in a deck from the back door...
  22. Siding over brick failure

I'd install it back on (or, file a claim.....depending on your deductible). Looks like the brick is just for structure, not looks
  23. little kitchen "refresh" project in the works

Wow Homerboy, very very nice indeed! I've been doing a TON of stuff around our house too. Well, I've been doing the easy stuff lol. I'll make a post about it as I dont wanna hijack this one. Just wanted to say way cool! *goes to store* *buys cap* *doffs cap in Homerboy's general direction* ;)...
  24. Question Desktop System has Slowed Down

D'oh, I guess you did mention software in your post. My bad :)
  25. Question Desktop System has Slowed Down

I'm guessing an update to the software is causing the problems then? What software is it if I may ask?
  26. Causes of dryer tripping circuit breaker?

    Any update?
  27. Oil mysteriously disappeared.

Reminds me of a couple weeks ago. Went to get the oil changed on the Rav4 mechanic: here, you need to sign this release form, you have no oil in your engine me: you mean there's no oil on the dipstick, right? mechanic: yeah, that's what I meant me: That's kind of a BIG difference, dont you...
  28. Causes of dryer tripping circuit breaker?

Perhaps if you put the breaker on a different set of 'plugs' or whatever they're called in the fuse box it may tell you something? I dunno, just spitballin here and trying to be helpful :)
  29. This can't be good

Cool, thank you for the info. I have a couple pieces of metal (iron?) conduit from when I tore out the Jacuzzi (sp) that was on the back porch. That will do nicely
  30. This can't be good

I believe the gutters are 'middle of the road' quality. They were installed last fall. Yes, the weather gets to below freezing here (it's like 29 now) We dont get a lot of sun on this side of the house. Across the street is nothing but tall trees that effectively block most of the suns rays...
  31. This can't be good

There was insulation only on the 'inside' wall of the garage. I put more on the 'outside' and 'garage door' side. Then I used......I forget what it's called...well, whatever sheets those are called. I re-attached the wiring to the outside of the wood sheets. -The big grey-sheathed one is the...
  32. This can't be good

The garage has no heat or AC. And there is no ceiling either. For now I'm gonna go out and knock down some icicles. It can only help the gutters from falling lol !
  33. This can't be good

Yeah it’s the crappy cell phone quality I guess lol. There is soffet there, it just doesn’t look like it. I’m wondering if I should put some insulation on it, or would nothing good come of it? I know air flow is important, and don’t wanna get mold and stuff Evidently if I were to insulate the...
  34. This can't be good

Hey hey everyone! Long time no see, eh? We've been pretty busy fixing up the 'new' old house the past few months. All of the painting has been done, floors are in, 90% of the doors are in, kitchen is mostly done, etc....... When it started snowing here a month ago or so, I noticed little...

  39. Question 'Ampere'/Next-gen gaming uarch speculation thread

I’m curious: how does one find out if their good PS is ‘good enough’? I’ve got an EVGA Supernova 850 from about 4 years ago. I believe performance degrades gradually over time. I’m just looking to see how it measures up today [emoji848]
  40. NON_POLITICAL China Coronavirus THREAD

Wrong, that’s not the reason. Your employer has to pay you for all of your unused vacation time when you get laid off. So it only benefits THEM to suggest you take vacation now. If you (and other employees of course) take your vacation now, your employer can show a smaller amount owed on their...
