    Future Hardware

Just trying to keep up on news. If prices stay competitive for the high-end processor market I'll have to build one.

Good point. I'll do some research on Bulldozer. But I must admit, the new i5, i7 processors look extremely tempting.

    Future Hardware

Yeah, that just about covers it. Seems like nothing ground-shattering is due soon. Does this mean that it's a good time to build a PC? I see a ton of deals for Sandy Bridge processors.

    Future Hardware

In terms of processors and video cards, what's on the way? The last time I built a computer was three years ago, and I sort of fell behind the times. I've been trying to find as many articles and posts that delineate a roadmap for Intel and AMD but have not had any luck. It seems like the...

    Performance Predicament

I am currently running an 8800GTS 320mb, and I am wondering if I should upgrade since the 8800GT 512mb provides a huge leap in performance. I could resell my 8800gts for something around 190-200 dollars, and could use that in order tobuy a new one. I need some feedback: is it worth doing...

    current e4300 overclock-ability?

It's true. I'm not sure where you can get the older revision of the E4300, but I think you will still be happy with its over clock. You should be able to get it to 3.0ghz no problem. Particularly if you're running at 9x333, which is perfect for the memory you have.

    Quad vs. Dual

Get the quad. Although some will argue that the E6750 has more overclockability, WHEN games that can use 4 cores come out, having those two extra cores will definitely be the deciding factor. If I were in your shoes, I would just buy an E2160. Both processors you're looking at, in my...

    Lock this thread please

Save her even more money. Intel E2140 - $76 Abit IP-35 E - $69 AR Minimum OC could bring that combo to E4x00 speeds. Not a problem at all, really. Other notes: You could probably find memory at a cheaper price than that. I'd recommend a different video card unless she...

    Putting Together The Final Pieces

Seems like you're going to be doing a lot with this computer. If I were you, I'd get a new HD. Probably 500gb, preferably Samsung HD501. I'm also not sure if the Q6600 is able to hit 3.4 ghz. It probably is, but in my limited scope of the forums, I've never seen it. As to the...

    what's the deal with lapping?

In my opinion, not really necessary. It reduces temperatures by a few degrees, and unless you're going to be doing HEAVY overclocking, don't do it. I also could be saying this because I was too scared to lap my own processor. :P I'm curious to see what other people do.

Price vs Performance, ordering new build tonight/tomorrow

I think you're forgetting what you started out your build as: budget. That, to me, means spending less than 900 dollars. Unfortunately, since you have to get a monitor, that changes things. MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L, $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128059...

Price vs Performance, ordering new build tonight/tomorrow

Hmm, interesting build. As for the case, I say go for the Centurion 5. I'm not sure what your PSU is, but I highly doubt you'll need that much power. I can't even find a page with details on it. Personally, I would recommend that new Corsair 450 watt PSU. It is most likely cheaper, and...

    Finding Memory Settings / Defaults

How do I find my RAM's default voltage? When I go into my BIOS, I don't see anything that relates to default voltage, rather, I see options that allow me to increase the voltage. My worry is that how do I know what voltage I'm using when I don't even know the stock voltage.

    CPU Memory Dividers, OC Issues

Ah, very interesting. What I'm running at right now is 3.10 GHz (10x 310 FSB), and I'm not even sure what ratio that is at. But I'm going to try running at 8x400, and if that doesn't seem to work out, then 9x333 may be the solution.
  17. E

    CPU Memory Dividers, OC Issues

Er, yes that's what I meant. 3.2 GHz does seem high. But from what I understand, clinching this 1:1 ratio is important towards OCing. Is there anyway that I could get the chip to 3.0 at the least, or 3.2 at the most, still keeping the ratio intact? Or is it even that important?..
  18. E

    CPU Memory Dividers, OC Issues

Does that mean that in order to get to 3.0 ghz, I would set the FSB to 400, therefore changing the multiplier? Potentially putting the multiplier at 8x and the FSB at 400??

    CPU Memory Dividers, OC Issues

It seems I'm having issues overclocking my new E4400 chip. I can get it to 3.10 GHz at 1.4V. I have 4 gigs of DDR2-800 ram, but I have no idea how to set the memory divider ratio to 1:1 or whatever the number is. My mobo is Gigabyte P35-DS3R. How do I do this? I know that there's an...

Building a Budget Yet Powerful Rig

Depends on the budget.. I'd personally drop the processor, get an E4300-4500. OC it. I'd also probably get rid of the motherboard. Get an aBit P35 board. Whichever it is... IP-35? It's cheap and OCs well. Or if you have the extra money to shell out, Gigabyte P35-DS3P supposedly owns.

    Got the Parts. Need opinions.

Hm, seems like you won't be needing the TH link anyways, seeing as you've made up your mind. I honestly would still add another HD... I think. The WD 150gb Raptor can be had for 150 right now, using that newegg deal.... And that is quite a deal. Since you're going to be saving all that...

    Got the Parts. Need opinions.

Looks good. A few concerns: 1. Do you have a PSU? If not, Corsair 620HX PSU. 2. I would personally recommend dropping that 1000 dollar processor and going for a Q6600. Why? Do a comparison using Tom's Hardware VGA charts (http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html). You'll notice a...

Building a new Computer, Tips needed

Are you looking at the PSUs that have already been recommended? Did you look at your budget? Take into account what you have. All I'm trying to say is that you have a budget of 600 dollars. That is not enough to go high-end (i.e. looking at E6x50), particularly when you're looking...

Building a new Computer, Tips needed

Both are good. That Earthwatts one comes with the Sonata that I first recommended, so if you want that PSU, you might as well just go for that deal. The Rosewill is fine as well. As for the case, it looks fine.

To AMD or Not AMD that is the question

I was referring only being applicable until Nehalem rolls around. I don't think most 965 and P35 chipsets will be able to run it.

Building a new Computer, Tips needed

The PSU in the Sonata III is actually very good. It's 500W, which should be enough to run your system...But if you want to go the other route, and get a separate case and PSU... PSU - Corsair 450VX 450W -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139003 -- $80 Case - CoolerMaster...

To AMD or Not AMD that is the question

Be different, go with AMD. I believe that if you get one of those AMD motherboards (not sure which chipset..) you can upgrade to the newest technology (after you save all that money for going for a lower-end proc). Unlike Intel, where the P35 supposedly can only handle up to Penryn.

Building a new Computer, Tips needed

Depending on what you want to do with your machine, I would allocate the money more towards the video card. Asking for roughly 100 dollars for a case and PSU is a bit hard to do, simply because it is better to invest around 70 dollars for a good PSU. Processor - Intel E4400 --...

    Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R vs. GA-P35-DS3R-DS3

Get the P35-DS3R. DDR3's gains are negligible. While they are amazing, they cost way too much. The P35-DS3R is about 40 dollars cheaper, so save yourself those bucks and put it towards your graphics card--something that you will notice give considerable gains in the performance of your...

    e6x50 vs. e4x00

I had the same issue. The E4500 and the E6750 are both tempting--but I recommend you look for an even lower price, so that you can get an early investment for your Penryn quad. The E4x00 series are excellent overclockers because they have such a great multiplier, whereas I've heard of...

Which Memory Brand is the Best?

I think it depends on your budget. Initial releases of DDR3 ram are very expensive, and the market will only increase the price. While it does perform very well, AFAIK, memory only contributes a small portion to your CPU's overall performance. Unless you have a large amount of money at your...

    $2000 to spend

You're going to have to specify what you you will be doing with the computer. Encoding, video-editing, a lot of multi-tasking, etc. -- most people will tell you to for a Q6600 G0 stepping. Gaming -- most people will tell you that dual cores are better. With that kind of spending cash, I...

    Purchase predicament: DX10 vs. DX9

I've read almost every article and review, compared all the cards and everything and I'm still at a loss. Here are my conclusions about the state of the Video Card world: 1. Current top-of-the-line cards cannot handle DX10. 2. DX10-intensive games will not be out for another year. 3...
