DVI confusion; can my setup run a dual link?

I have an HIS Radeon 4870 1GB video card. I used the Wikipedia article on DVI to determine which plugs I had. My video card two DVI-I dual link female plugs. I just bought a 26" Asus VK266H Monitor ($370 from Newegg!). It has a single DVI-D dual link female plug. I'm running at the...

Help me finalize my first build

I've built two systems recently using some of those components. For my own system, I'm using a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L with an E8400. Overclocks OK, but seems like Gigabyte's Northridge tends to be a bit on the hot side. Other than that, great board, easy to setup. I built my friend a...

Ordered parts to build a system; any "gotchas" I should be aware of?

Building a new system from scratch for a friend. He's fortunate enough to be in a position where cost was not a big factor, yet I didn't want to go overboard on a system that's primarily used by his kids for doing homework and occasional surfing. I got this for under $1800 on Newegg. I...

Do you guys use the "safely remove usb device" option in windows for thumb drives?

I actually had a problem with a flash drive once (which may or may not have been related to me not choosing the "remove safely" option). It became unusable after moving it from one computer to another until I reformatted it. It's possible it had nothing to do with me skipping the "safety"...

Did I ruin my motherboard? Or is something else wrong?

Update: it turned out the motherboard was bad. I bought a Gigabyte EP45-DS3L and got it back up and running again. EP45 is harder to get a stable tune than the P35, but finally got it straightened out for now.

Upgrading P35 to P45, will it require reinstalling Windows XP?

No problems here either. I just replaced a dead Gigabyte P35 with a fresh Gigabyte EP45 and replaced my video card. I did not reinstall Windows Vista 64.

Did I ruin my motherboard? Or is something else wrong?

No insult, even intelligent people do stupid things, right? Yes, I'm using the cables plugged into the slots labeled "PCI-E" on the power supply. I can get into BIOS just fine, but I can't boot to safe mode. I tried resetting the BIOS to optimized and default, same result.

Did I ruin my motherboard? Or is something else wrong?

So I just got a 4870 1gb to replace my 8800 gts 320 mb. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R. Power supply is Ennermax Liberty 650W. Pull out the 8800, put in the 4870; 4870 has two power inputs as opposed to the 8800s 1, but I had an extra cable. All of the fans start up (CPU, case...

Update my CPU or video card?

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

I have the same board with an E6750. Even in power saving mode (where it's typically running at 2 Ghz versus 2.67 Ghz) my nb (temp1 on SpeedFan) hovers in the 54C range (which SpeedFan thinks is high), though all my other temps are good (cores are ~21-23). I've never had stability problems...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

F6a BIOS just released today, though the note is very similar to the F5e: "Fix PS2 keyboard compatibility issues" I'm using a PS2 keyboard (and a PS2 mouse). How about everyone else? I still get blue screens once or twice a day (very randomly, doesn't appear to be load-related). It's still...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

My system unceremoniously shuts down at least once a day, which is not cool. It's not clear whether it's a motherboard issue or the fact that I'm running Vista x64. The DS3R has received lots of good reviews at various hardware sites, and putting it together and adjusting the BIOS was fairly...

I wonder if it's any different than the beta? It would be nice if they posted more detailed release notes.

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

Wow, that is a nice case, probably cools somewhat better than mine. One other factor may be that your board has the nicer copper cooling conduits, whereas mine (the DS3R) just has a big heatsink in the middle. I'm somewhat limited in where I can put a slot fan. Here's my layout from the...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

Weird thing....I removed slot fan described above (in the highest slow, right under the board heat sink). After rebooting, the idle temp is still 57C (higher than my previously recorded baseline). That temp1 reading diff must be related to something else. Since I took that baseline, I did...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

I've been running it at 2.1 (boosted +.3 in the BIOS). I'd misread an earlier comment by you about the voltages...I initially thought you said 1.8 was spec, but actually you were just saying it's the JEDEC spec. My bad. I just discovered a BIOS setting I hadn't noticed before that could be a...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

You may have noticed under the BIOS's "Intelligent Tweaker" menu there is an item labeled C.I.A.2 (CPU Intelligent Accelerator). From what I understand, it "overclocks on the fly." There are 5 modes (other than "Disabled" that claim to boost the CPU from 5% to 19% depending on loading...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

I'm not 100% sure that you need to increase the RAM voltage. Earlier things I'd read about my Corsair 6400C4 sticks suggested that it helped but others here claim that the stock 1.8 is fine. This site has some recommendations for voltages and settings for that stick. This might be the spec for...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

Update: still running at stock speeds; only BIOS change is forcing memory to use spec'd timings with memory voltage bump to 2.13 (versus the stock 1.83) Still getting bluescreen-shutdowns. I'm not sure that it's related to the hardware though; I am running Vista Home Premium x64, which being...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

I reset everything to the optimized defaults, then went back and set the memory timings to Crucial's spec'd settings (4-4-4-12) with a +.3 boost in DDR voltage to get it up to 2.1 I should note that the bluescreens I got before didn't happen during a high load...seemed to be pretty random...

    Gigabyte P35 Motherboard Thread

It is lame that they don't tell you what the defaults are, but you can use Speedfan to deduce them. Assuming that Speedfan's Vcore2 reading is the DDR2 voltage (pretty sure it is, but I'm a novice at this), I have mine boosted by +.3 and Speedfan reads it as 2.13, which tells me that the...

No, I'm not an experienced overclocker, just trying to learn. I got those suggestions from another forum. Actually, forgot to mention that I did NOT set my vcore that high...that was the one thing on that list I didn't do. My core is still running in the ~1.31 range. I was trying to get a...
