That's fubar, Trey. I run BF1942 (Desert Combat) inside my LAN while simultaneously hosting a Ventrilo Server (VoIP) with 5+ external clients + me (internal) on a seperate machine on the LAN, *and* simultaneously hosting a NWN server with 4+ external clients. Additionally, my wife will surf...
Wow. That is amazing. I just arrived at the video forum to scrounge around for information on potential problems with the 52.16 detonators and DC. I just rebuilt my machine and installed the 52.16s fresh. Previously, I'd had the 41.09s which worked perfectly.
Stunning. 5 minutes of...
Hi,
I am a happy owner of the extremely stable 8KHA+ board running with two 256mb sticks of RAM. My buddies are loading their Desert Combat maps faster than I am and I'm beginning to feel the need to double the RAM.
How will my board handle this config:
slot 1 - PC2100 - 256mb
slot 2 - PC2100...
Hi,
I've got a nice rig running two 20gb Western Digital drives in a RAID 0 array on a Promise FastTraK 100TK2. Alas, I've filled 35gb of them already, and I am prepared to install a new 80gb WD drive to create more space. While I am at it, I thought I'd upgrade from W2K to XP. Thus, my...
If I want a job to run hourly at 15 minutes past the hour from 10 PM to 3 AM, how do I set up the crontab? Is it:
15 22-3 * * * user cmd
or
15 22-23,0-3 * * * user cmd
Your response before 10 PM EST is appreciated! ;-)

Workin', that is INCREDIBLY good advice. I'm going to incorporate. This is precisely the kind of rat's nest I want to avoid. LOL at the $185 plumber vs. my pittance for bringing him into the 21st Century.
If it weren't for the friend that put me in touch, I'd not be getting into this at all...
Great site! Excellent advise. Oddly, it didn't work.
I modified the registry to turn off negative DNS caching, and there was no effect. So, I tried ipconfig /flushdns - still no good. In fact, perhaps even worse. Now there were no good connections. So, I examined the IP returned by DNS by...
Hi all! :-)
I'm a developer by trade but I've got fairly robust experience with PC diagnostics, and limited experience with networking. By way of a friend, I have an opportunity to take on a small client of 13 machines as a PC-support consultant. The client's immediate needs are to move from...
Hi all.
I've got a mature 3-box LAN at home with a Win2K box as the most-used "family" machine. This box has abruptly begun to "screw up" DNS at various times when surfing, and return either "site not found" or "permission denied" or, even stranger, open up an entirely different web site. For...
ah ha!! I just figured it out, with your aid, BBF. :-)
I checked the details of the top PID. The offending PID was 2245 and had been running for quite some time (under root, as well). I killed it, and ran top again and lo! Using less than 1% of CPU again.
Thanks, BBF. The "how long you...
Hi all :-)
I'm a fairly raw Linux user, with my only experience in building my own ipfilter firewall box and in doing some file manipulation in UNIX. I just dedicated an old Dell PowerEdge 1300 Dual P3 as an NWN server and "play" box, running RH 7.3. I'm learning a lot!
I was most pleased to...
Whelp, my rented cable modem was burned out within a year because of the ISP's poor wiring job and a signal that was "too hot". If *I* had owned the modem, there is no chance chance in hell that the ISP would have admitted that their screw up had destroyed the hardware. I'd STILL have a bad...
Ooph. You absolutely MUST split off the students from the staff and throttle the hell out of them during business hours. Of course, chances are the college staff is using the accursed Kazaa as well. LOL! If you wish, review this presentation made by a colleague of mine on our bandwidth...
Listen VERY CAREFULLY:
Is the returned mail you're getting in your inbox also showing up in your SENT ITEMS box?
Don't tell us anything else. Don't type about how virus scanners haven't detected anything. Don't share any of your conjecture. Just answer that one single question. Only...
Howdy. :-)
Boy, do I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere - I couldn't find it in a search.
I am running a RH 7.3 server with a nice RAID 5 SCSI array, and I would like to back up certain data contained on a separate Win2K machine using FAT32. Try as I might, I cannot mount the...
Hang on, gents (and ladies). I went ahead and installed LILO on the MBR and the system boots both W2K and Linux just fine. Oddly, the boot floppy still gets the 0X10 error. Perhaps I've got a bad sector. Thanks for the help!
-DSP
Drat. Maybe I am just SOL. I install LILO to hda5, the /boot partition, and create a boot disk as well. I am then supposed to boot the machine with the boot disk, but it is during this boot that I get the 0X10 error. Boot no-go.
I seems this error is not related to where LILO is installed...
Could someone take a moment to explain step 2 of the How to use Windows 2000 Boot Loader to Dual Boot with Linux and Windows 2000 FAQ in more detail? I've attempted to follow the FAQ to the letter, but I am not certain what the "superblock of the root partition of the Linux drive" is. The FAQ...
Hey!! If you're playing Empire Earth multiplayer, then you're one of the last of a dying breed. FWIW, my name is on page 238 of the manual (Strike Team). Sierra allowed that game to die on the vine. Do *NOT* by the expansion. The X-pack is not made by the same guys that made EE...
For 3 months I've been using IPCHAINS to route traffic on my home network. But the need arose for me to install the FireBox Mobile VPN client one of my internal machines in order to do some "work". Though I could get what appeared to be a good connection to the host, try as I might I couldn't...
I use su twice every day:
su root
cp /etc/rc.d/gaming.firewall /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall
/etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall restart
exit
su root
cp /etc/rc.d/tight.firewall /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall
/etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall restart
exit
If there were another way... check that - if there were ANY danger, I'd...
Hi!
I'm looking to backup my Linux system on my home network to a Win2K server with a greater fault tolerance.
I need help mounting the Win2K shared drive. Neither smbmount //*servername*/*shared drive* or smbmount -I 192.168.1.2 -U *username* -P *password* are working for me.
Samba is...
You will not be able to share resources between the networked machines if either one is using the free ZA. If that doesn't matter to you (i.e, you are not backing up one PC's data on the other, or using shared printers), then there is no harm using ZA. If that DOES matter, you've got to either...
Ok Ok Ok. I acknowledge that I could run the RtCW server on the firewall box. :D
Does anyone have a favorite proxy server software that they've had success using with a Linux/Win2K network? ;)
-DSP
The firewall is running on an Athlon 700 w/256 mb RAM.
The Win2K Server is running on a dual Pentium III 500 ex-server w/ 512mb RAM. I'd prefer to run RtCW on *it*, even though I'm well aware I can run it on a Linux platform.
-DSP
Hi all!!
I've got a Linux box (2.2.20 kernel) dedicated to firewalling for my little home network.
I'd like to host an RtCW server on an internal box running Win2K Server.
Although I have opened ports recommended by the RtCW community, I have yet to get RtCW to successfully register itself...
Hi all!!
I've just built myself a home network with the following configuration:
AT&T Cable modem feeding:
Firewall: Athlon 700, 256mb PC100, ASUS K7M w/VIA chipset, two Intel Ethernet Pro 100's, running Linux
Machine1: XP1600+, 512mb PC2100, Epox 8KHA w/VIA chipset, 3Com 905c series 10/100...
Hey! I've surfed here from one of my internal machines! SUCCESS!!! :)
Well, almost - I still can't surf the internet from the firewall machine.
And, I have to use the DNS server installed on my Win2K machine to surf anything.
I'm getting DNS errors surfing on the firewall machine, even...
D'oh!!
I recieved signals last night that I'd best be watching "Darma and Greg" on the couch with the wife instead of spending another night downstairs having fun with my new project. I did not get to apply any advice given yesterday, however I'm willing to bet that my connectivity problems...
Hey guys!
Thanks for all your support and advise. I see that most of you believe I'm setting myself up for failure by trying to pull this off by starting with the 2.0 kernel. Hmmm.... You may be quite correct! ;) Last night, *before* I read the forums here, I went ahead and installed Red...
Ah, bart - yes. There are three PC's, but alas only one workstation with a 4-port KVM. I could easily set up a 2nd workstation with the old t-bird, but it wouldn't fit in aesthetically with the rest of the house. (i.e., I'm allowed to put a PC where no one can see it).
The third, undefined...
Hi All!
I'm a gamer (EE, RtCW) that lives within the confines of a surfing and emailing wife who uses the same machine. Obviously, when I make a move to tweak a machine, I need to be certain that I don't screw up and get the lovely wife mad because of a day's downtime. It is under this...
I?ve acquired a Dell PowerEdge 1300, rough specs are:
Dual P3 500s
512mb SDRAM
LSI MegaRaid Enterprise 1200 RAID controller, dual-channel
3 IBM Ultrastar 18ES 9.1gb SCSI HDDs
2 Intel 10/100 NIC
Onboard RadeonII video, 2mb
A gaming rig is out.
I?m thinking of setting it up as a server with a...
Well, to be honest with you, I wouldn't recommend ANY 21' monitor to a gamer. With screen so large, it becomes harder to see all of the action on the screen without having to physically turn your head (and tired yourself out). This might not be a huge deal in FPS games where 95% of the action...
