Yea. It is a "wireless bridge." Many various names, but they all do the same thing. It's one of the reasons dd-wrt, tomato, openwrt, etc. are very popular. I've got 3 wireless bridges in my network. 1 in a different neighbor's house. We all share internet.

Yea. Try the far apart channels (1,11). I think dd-wrt does 50? wireless clients at the same time? So you shouldn't be maxing it out.

Yay for a fried firewall

Hate to go so far off topic, but has anybody here acutally loaded up a linksys router with dd-wrt to 200+ clients? Is it usable? I've never gotten past 30.

Faster internet?

Yea. It sucks living in small rural areas. There isn't much choice. Satellite is horrible, and if there is 3G then it is equally bad. Have you tried asking for the prices on dry loop dsl? (if you don't want the phone line) I got rid of my phone and is on dry loop.

Any Wireless-N routers worth their weight yet?

I've heard the linksys wrt600 series and a dlink gaming series are good. Dual band, and apparently very stable. I'm also pretty sure that those will get full N certification once it's finalized.

Yep that would work. btw, shouldn't the Actionteck be assigning ips in the 192.168.1.1** range? Most routers I've messed with start at the 100s.

There is your problem. They must be on the same network (not sure of the exact term here). 192.168.2.* won't easily communicate to 192.168.1.* So set them to the same thing. Like, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 and shut off the DHCP on the wrt54g or the actiontec. You can also set...

I want to make sure I have got this right.

Here is the name of the actual switch: D-Link DES-1105 5-Port 10/100 Ethernet Switch The buffalo routers are rated very very high, but I've only found them to be more expensive than other routers. Being the cheap bastard I am, I always go for the cheaper alternative.

Wow. I've never seen this before. I don't understand why schools would spend so much money to bother. btw, What's the range on this? What if you live close to the school? Wouldn't it kill APs that it has no control over?

If that is the case, then you need to connect directly using one of your computers. Get it authorized and setup. Then tell dd-wrt to copy the computer's mac address. Thus the campus network will see one device with an already known mac address. All your devices will be behind a NAT.

How to extend router signal?

Does your router have removable antenna connectors? If so, grab a high gain panel antenna. It should improve the signal.

lousy wireless signal from 1 floor up

There is your problem. Your routers are on different vertical planes, and there is a floor between them. Omnidirectional "stick" antennas are really only semi-omnidirectional in the horizontal plane, and even still basically in two giant lobes. So try changing one of the antennas on each...

DD-WRT Help

There is an Access Restrictions tab. You can enter mac addresses, ip ranges and such in there. But if your neighbor is any smart he can change his MAC. Using wireless security is still the best bet. Though, you may want to ask him about splitting the internet bill. :)
