  1. Hmmm...this tells me Microcenter will be discounting

LOL, I noticed that as well and was able to checkout. Only $6.98 for shipping. Sounds too good to be true though. I ordered the Gigabyte UD5H board for only $139 which is supposed to be the after rebate price. Waiting for my cancellation e-mail :) But if it is true, their site is about to get...
  2. Hmmm...this tells me Microcenter will be discounting

That Gigabyte z77x-ud5h board looks nice for $139. If I hadn't jumped on the 2600k deal I would have been down at Microcenter tomorrow for that board and the 3570k.
  3. How long has your computer lasted?

Almost 4 years - my current build dates from the summer of 2008. It's an e8400 oc'd to 3.5Ghz on a Gigabyte EP45-DS3R board. It's been a great system but I just got myself a 2600K and will be building a new system this week.
  4. Ivy Bridge Comes On Monday 4.23. Who's buying?

Ivy Bridge is turning out to be a big disappointment to me. The early predictions on speed increases from Sandy Bridge were estimated at 15-20% but it turns out it's only about 5%. I was going to do a Sandy Bridge build last summer but held off for Ivy Bridge. What a waste of time, arghhh...
  5. CPU's in the future...

There's a physical limit on how small they make these integrated circuits. They will have to make chips bigger or go multi-processor. The days of single processor machines will seem quaint.
  6. Busting Vista Myths

I used nLite to tweak XP. I stripped out a lot of the unnecessary background services in XP for example. Outlook Express is gone. Menu delay is set to zero. You name it, I tweaked it. My XP OS flies on a 3.4GHz Core Duo. If you tried it, you'd agree. Speed is important to me. I don't buy into...
  7. Busting Vista Myths

This troll is not convinced. Vista is a dog as far as I'm concerned and I have tried it out extensively. I don't like being forced to do things the way Microsoft wants me to do them, and that is what Vista feels like as I try to do things in it. Besides the eye candy, it simply doesn't offer me...
  8. Paypal Promotion: 20% off at select vendors (Newegg, Toys R Us, eToys, Ritz, etc.)

It would be interesting to hear the real truth behind this deal, but I don't think we ever will. I've heard Overstock.com had a 17,000 customer limit. Did Newegg know how much their limit was beforehand? Most retailers were supposed to honor the promotion until December 10th, but Newegg...
  9. Reid to keep Congress in session so Bush can't make recess appointments.

I heard about this in the news. Excellent tactic. Checks on the president were nonexistent when the republicans were in control of both houses. Bush made lots of prior appointments during recesses. No more. It's a sign of things to come. The republicans are out of here come '08 so they better...
  10. has anyone explored the israeli connection to 9-11

I don't believe in any conspiracy theories about 9/11. There were too many independent observers and investigators of the event. If you read the right "evidence", you'd also believe in Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster.
  11. The democrats Are not backing down this time.

The net result of the Iraq war is that Iran and Iraq will be allies in the future, not enemies as they were under Saddam. I'm waiting for an answer from the 3 people still supporting this war on WHY that is a good thing. GWB has irrevocably changed the course of history for the worse. That's...
  12. Simple Post

"None of the above". I'm still waiting for a viable 3rd party candidate to come to the rescue. For those too young to remember 92, Perot didn't enter the race until very late in the game. There's still hope. I see the '08 election as being a sweep of all incumbents, though the Democrats will be...
  13. Is this upgrade worth it?

A 33% improvement in processor speed is not going to be that noticeable at all in day to day use. The 2.4 chip you are looking at is way overpriced for the performance you will get. If you're reasonably happy with the speed you have, then there's no sense in upgrading until you have to. If you...
  14. new Intel CPUs and pricing for January

How about almost 5Ghz for an e4500? e4500 world records The 4400 records show about the same: e4400 Relax everyone, there will be higher multiplier Penryns for us next year.
  15. Woohoo!!!! Q6600 at 3.78 on air

I think most of us who overclock like to test how high our chips can get even if we can't realistically run them at those speeds all the time. I still think the goal should be to run the chip as high as cooling will allow.
  16. OC (e4500) Need some clarification and opinions

Since CPU-Z says the RAM is at 399MHz, your RAM is actually at 798MHz. That's because of the "2" in DDR2. I see how you're confused about that FSB to RAM ratio. The FSB of your chip is 1066/4=266MHz. So the ratio of 266MHz to 400Mhz (1/2 the DDR2 speed) is 2:3. Yes, that's good cooling for...
  17. Post your fried CPU stories!

I once overclocked a 300Mhz G3 (yes, that's a Mac) to just over 400Mhz. That's an extreme overclock for that chip. Ran happily for over a year until one day it refused to work. Transferred the chip to another computer to test it and confirmed the chip was dead. No doubt the overclocking did it...
  18. Opinion Needed: e2180 or e4500 (both m0)

How much is $30 worth to you? The 4500 is a better chip because of the extra cache, though once overclocked you may not be able to distinguish the difference between the two of them. Just from what I've seen, those chips will overclock about the same. Are you planning to use the stock heatsink...
  19. finished lapping my Q6600 (with pics and results)

I didn't hesitate to lap my e4500. It's an exceptional overclocker and I wanted to maximize my cooling. At present I have it running at 3.41Ghz with speedstepping on. Doesn't even break 1.35V under load. I don't think I'll have trouble reselling it because chances are the person who would buy a...
  20. Which way to orient tuniq tower?

Yes, you want to have the Tuniq fan blowing air in the direction of your case exhaust fan. Sounds like your fans line up good like mine. The only caveat is that you want to make sure your rear exhaust fan is always pushing out more air than the Tuniq fan is exhausting, otherwise the warm air...
  21. What can i use to clean my CPU, I want to remove the thermal paste and put a new one.

I use Target brand isopropyl alcohol (91%) and Q-tips. I don't even bother trying to "scrape" off any paste first. Just dip a Q-tip in the alcohol and start cleaning away. If you really want to get fancy with thermal paste, then you might want to try some high end Shin Etsu (google it) otherwise...
  22. Just got a P35-DS3L/e6420. Want to achieve 3.7GHz stable!

If your chip failed Orthos after 2 min at 3.4Ghz, then try upping the voltage a bit (up to 1.5V). Sounds like you may even get to 3.5ghz stable if you up the vcore enough and so long as your cooler can handle it. Getting to 3.4Ghz or beyond is exceptional, so be happy that you can do that.
  23. e4600 OC performance?

Have seen no reports, but I bet they will be the best overclockers of the e4xxx series. I had some doubts whether the e4500 would be a better overclocker than the e4300 or e4400. Though early reports were iffy, the M0 stepping processors have proved to be better overclockers than the L2 stepping...
  24. E2140, 2160 and 2180?

Is that a retail e2180? If so, yes, that is a good deal. Lowest on pricegrabber is $90. If it's OEM, then not such a good deal. I would pay extra to get a chip in a sealed box. I urge everyone looking at the 2xxx series to go right for the e2180. To me, the e2140 is too much of a gamble. Have...
  25. Somebody say something about Penryn!!

It will be very interesting to see how high the Penryns overclock. The e4700 is current generation (Allendale) but don't forget they'll be coming out with mainstream/low-end models of Penryn with higher multipliers (but smaller caches) later in 2008. Those are the ones I'll be looking out for.
  26. E2xxx and E4xxx overclock thread

93C??? That is dangerously hot in my opinion. You never want it to reach the point where your computer is shutting down because the processor is overheating. The consensus is you shouldn't run above 75C. I was facing a similar dilemma about purchasing a decent heatsink. The cost for a Tuniq...
  27. E2140, 2160 and 2180?

From anecdotal evidence I've seen, the e2180 is the best overclocker of the bunch and the e2140 is the worst, statistically speaking. It doesn't matter what the reasons are, that's just the way it is. I would recommend anyone looking at the e2xxx series to go for the e2180.
  28. My first overcloock - what next?

you're lucky - you have a chip that can hit 3Ghz at 1.28V. you should easily be able to hit 3.2 or even 3.4Ghz by upping the voltage then upping the FSB. if you want to be conservative, limit the voltage to 1.35V. your goal in overclocking is to run the chip at the highest possible overclock...
  29. What do you run as a daily overclock speed?

Mine runs at 9.3Ghz 24/7. I also drive one of those monster trucks with the big wheels. I'm only 5'1" and have a teeny weenie so I have to compensate somehow :D
  30. Which air cooler to get?

I was recently debating between the Thermalright Ultra 120 (not EX version) and the Tuniq. I got the Tuniq because I heard that it is supposedly easier to mount and more stable than the Thermalright and I also heard that the finish on the bottom is better. Well, those 2 things were not so in my...
  31. AMD A64 X2 5000+ Black Edition vs C2D E6550

Agreed. Any overclock you can do in the bios is easy. In the dinosaur age, overclocking might have involved resetting jumpers, dip switches and/or soldering in a new oscillator - and for all that effort you usually only got a 5-10% improvement in speed :Q
  32. E2xxx and E4xxx overclock thread

I have come to the conclusion that my e4500 is an unusually hot one - as hot or hotter than a quad :frown: I lapped both the Tuniq heatsink and CPU. At stock speed (2.2Ghz) I am getting idle temps of 38-40C and load temps of 50-52C. This is in a 70F room. What's strange is that the default...
  33. E2xxx and E4xxx overclock thread

Don't let this thread die yet, I'm just getting started :( I upgraded from an e2160 to the e4500. The chip runs much hotter than my old one, so I tossed the geminii and moved up to a Tuniq. I've got a real good e4500 on my hands. Maximum frequency I could get was just over 3.7Ghz...
  34. Problems overclocking E6550 w/ a Gigabyte Mobo

I'm not familiar with your motherboard, I have an abit. Are you able to adjust the RAM voltage to 2.2V? Can the computer boot into Windows at stock speed? If so, your inability to overclock could be many things, including lack of enough voltage to the CPU (try adjusting vCore up a bit in the bios).
  35. Problems overclocking E6550 w/ a Gigabyte Mobo

Look at what your RAM settings are. Make sure you're running the Crucial at 2.2V. When you manually adjust the FSB, the bios may also up the RAM speed to beyond what your RAM can handle. Make sure it's around 800MHz for testing purposes. You can overclock the RAM once you get the CPU stable...
  36. Abit IP35-E Review (500MHz FSB board)...$90 @ NewEgg + $6.61 ship

Can anyone running this board with an e4500 tell me the default vcore the board selects? My default is 1.185V. That seems low to me. When I had an e2160 in there, the default vcore was 1.325V. Does the default vcore vary from individual chip to individual chip? or by processor family?
  37. E2xxx and E4xxx overclock thread

I bought an E2160 (M0 stepping) with high hopes of running it at 3.4 GHz or beyond based on reports I've read, but my chip and heatsink are not up to the task. I have the Geminii cooler, which is more hype than substance. I have reseated it three times with little improvement in my temperature...
  38. Abit IP35-E Review (500MHz FSB board)...$90 @ NewEgg + $6.61 ship

I was thinking of getting an E6320 (7X multiplier) for this board. Am I right in thinking that with this board, it would be better to go with a 7X chip like the E6320 rather than a 8X chip like the E6750? The OP mentioned that he got the processor up to 3.415GHz. Was this the limit of the processor?
