Changing CPU, do I have to reinstall Windows XP?

shamus, I guess it depends on the chipsets involved. I've changed both mobos and CPUs at the same time on several builds and still run the same copy of XP without making any changes to it. Perhaps if you use the same make mobo you'll have a better chance of success, not sure... I've always...

Fresh Install of Windows XP Problem

MUTTS, I don't have any idea what that png file is... maybe a rootkit or trojan horse on your drive? If so that would explain your problems. Had you been doing anti-virus scans before? And had a firewall? In any case, sorry to hear your problem. I believe I'd have another go at it...

Trouble with Mac Mail

Can't give you a solution, and not sure this would be covered, but the the July issue of Mac World has a complete rundown of mail options for Macs. Might be worth a read (I haven't read yet, it's pretty comprehensive). Hope it could help, but I'm sure someone else would have an answer for you...

Parasitic, If I'M not mistaken, changing/removing the hard drive on your Macbook/Pro does not void the warranty. The Macbook manual even shows you how to do that... Noel

This is a slight departure from the original discussion, but I like a combination of multiple drives and multiple partitions. More flexibility that way. On my primary drive I have my OS on the C partition and my Programs on the D partition - you can get away with 20GB for XP, 50GB for Vista and...

Optimal Mouse Surface?

abe, I frequently use the top side of my easy chair cushion in the evening when I have my laptop going and I mouse on the cloth surface. I've found the mouse will work almost anywhere... As for optimal? Can't say.

how to enable higher resolutions on Canon's 8800F scanner

Don't think so - the higher dpi specs are probably for transparacies because they do require higher dpi's due to their nature. Check your scanner literature. Besides, you'd have humungus size files if you scanned everything at those higher resolutions. Old (or new) family pics shouldn't...

Have you checked the specs at the Pioneer web site? Buy the one with the quieter specs if they show that data. Otherwise, flip a coin and buy. If you don't like it, exchange for the other.

Are you sure you have your CPU power leads hooked up? 4/8 pin from PSU to Mobo... Maybe upgrading your BIOS to the latest will help.

fezhead, First, I would eliminate that Tuniq Tower cooler - the E8400 comes with a good stock cooler that will suffice until you can afford a better cooler. The stock should be able to get you to at least 3.5 from the 3.0... Maybe you'll have to wait for that 4.0! Then downgrade the OS and...

Is there a way to reinstall WinXp Home Oem with a Retail Xp Home CD?

Hi all, Think I have the problem solved... I found a setting buried under Tools/E-mail accounts/highlighted my e-mail address/click on change/more settings/check "leave a copy of messages on the server." Whew, took some searching, but the test message stayed in both Outlook and my ISP's web...

OK, strange but true... I used System Restore on one computer and ended up with 2 of those crazy directories in the same partition. The both were labeled with SP2xxxx titles, so were probably just notations for the MSD automatic updates to XP as MustISO suggested... But this time I was able to...

Turns out these apparently aren't hidden files. I went into Folder Options/Views and selected Do Not Show Hidden Files and Folders, applied and it was still there. Opened and closed Explorer and Refreshed it was still there... Strange that an MS update file like this would stay visible even...

start up problem

It's perfectly OK to use the Power button on the front of the computer to start it up. But not so when shutting down. Also shutting down without using the Windows shutdown scheme will cause you to get that start-up dialog. Next time you try to start up, use "Start up using last known good...

pekingman, That's a different situation. It' possible that PSU fried more than the hard drive. You need to put a new drive in there and see if it will boot... If not you'll probably need to check all your components to see what's good and what's gone. Noel

Instant Crash at Splash Screen

KJishPrime, Welcome! 2 thoughts: Could be the BIOS is set to boot as AHCI instead of IDE and there are no AHCI drivers are installed. That will generally cause a BSOD and re-boot, etc. Go into the first page of the BIOS and check the hard drive setup. If it shows AHCI, re-set it to IDE...

AFElite, If you bought that HDD retail, there was likely a CD in the box which is supposed to help you set it up for operation. If you bought it OEM and don't have a CD, go to the manufacturer's web sit and download their set-up tools program and use it. These programs all have cloning...

Do I need to buy a new copy of Xp? If so where?

Sigismundo, owensdj is correct, but if you re-install that upgrade version of XP on your new computer, you'll also need the older Windows CD that you upgraded from. If you don't have that original Windows CD, the XP upgrade install will quit. I assume you upgraded from ME or Windows 98 way...
