I had braces and retainers in my mouth from 3rd grade all the way till I was a junior in high school. I got made fun of and everything... now i've been told that some regret that.
It depends on the school district. I taught at this one school where they were able to but the students who have a different belief were able to leave early. It was like that for all holidays for those students, and it is so hard as a teacher to not incorperate holidays in the classroom.
