Thank you all for these very helpful comments on dealing with pci-x and relative speed considerations in this setup.
There is onboard raid for two scsi dives, and I'll put the OS there as has been suggested.
So I'm looking at PCI-X SATA controllers seems one or two of these...
I picked up an old poweredge server on the cheap, Plan is to load it up with 1.5TB drives and stick it in the basement as a centralized media repository.
But it only has pci-x slots If I get a pci-x SATA controller will that interface be fast enough to stream video (I'm assuming it will...
As part of my quest to fill my entire visual field with monitors, I'd like to add a 3rd 24 or 30" monitor to my current pair of 24".
Also, although it seems triple-head cards are focused on 2D quality, it would be nice to at least maintain the level of gaming performance I have with my...
That guide looks like it will help, even though I'm installing windows on a completely separate drive.
Linux isn't giving up that drive easily. I've removed any reference to it in etc/fstab but upon bootup I get a message that there a system error, and the machine continues to reboot until I...
I'm running RHEL5 on a system with 2 separate HDD's and 2 other drives in a raid array.
Just added the second non-RAID drive a few days ago and have been storing data on it. Now however, I have to install vista ultimate to run certain applications. Seems like the simpliest way would be to...
Thanks very much guys! He took a break from writing grants long enough for me to get on there today.... safe mode and deleting/reinstalling the drivers did the trick.
I put a Asus geforce 8500 in my advisor's computer, and everything was fine with it for about a month. When I attempt to boot with 1 or 2 monitors attached I get the windows loading bar and then the screen goes black. From various HDD noises, it seems it complete booting, but there's nothing...
thanks for your input guys.
Some other error triggering the heatspreader message does seem like the best explanation. The stuff is guaranteed to be compatible with the particular dell... so I'll be sending it back. Suprised 1/2 of my order has the issue.
I received this weird message when I was installing fb-ram in a xeon based dell. "Alert! Invalid memory installed. All ram must have heatsinks."
First off, every dimm clearly had a heatsink and was free of major mechanical defects. Some of the ram that did work was visually identical to...
I'm slightly nervous because I need to order a few thousand dollars of ram... so I just wanted to make sure there's nothing funky about Dell xeon workstations such that they can't take generic 667mhz fb-ram like the following.
sample dimm
Thanks so much!
I'm trying to save some money on my new workstation by ordering this ram (click) insead of getting price gouged by dell. Need to order 32gb worth, so I"m hoping not to screw this up.... (workstation is dell 690)

Hi Guys,
I've considered the suggestions here - really helpful, and based on this and work from the Uni PTB's, I'm going with dual quad core xeons with 32GB of ram.
Question: Is there a particular distro of linux that is easy to setup in this situation? I've been a user... just never...
I agree with the $3500 number - somewhat more for the fastest processors, but really what I need is the ram.
I'll be analyzing similar networks for the next two years, so investing in the machine seems like a decent idea. Really appreciate the input.
thanks for the input guys - dell is asking ~6K or 10K for dual quad xeon setups with 16 or 32GB ram respectively
I can't find any motherboad with 16 dimm slots - if you know of a specific one shoot me a link. Certainly cheaper than 8x4GB.
I'm looking into a machine with 32GB of ram for some microarray analysis I'm working on. I've built desktop pc's before and I'm wondering how much more is involved in setting up a machine with a ton of memory beyond picking out a mobo that will support it.
Just looking at Dell's prices it...
