I liked Tom's the most. Very detailed, with neat diargams and expalantions, plus nice choice of benchmarks. I was expecting him to splam P4 to hell, but he actually found some good things to say about.
Point taken, although comments like "go read the paper and you will see why you are wrong, I know, I wrote it" seem a little overboard.
On to another topic. I am really disappointed that you went to work for 3dfx :) I enjoyed your articles and opinions and I think B3D was excellent...
I am sorry, but what you are saying confers (to me, at least) why 32 bit color is a good example.
"32-bit color requires 2x the bandwidth of 16-bit color."
Well, by the same token, a game that uses T&L requires hardware T&L engine.
"Game developers didn't design for...
That's just not true. If 32-bit color ordeal has tough us anything, it is that hardware comes before the software.
Do you see any games being developed with "good, quality" T&L engine that 3dfx is developing? I mean, everyone knows its coming, but who is developing for it? Should...
Dave, I must disagree with your assertion that game developers would make T&L games without T&L hardware on the market. With today's cutthroat competition, I really don't see anyone putting time and money to develop something no one supports. In addition, without knowable of hardware it...
While I thought that the interview was a good read overall, but I didn't like his "3 fps faster/slower" rhetoric. It is indeed possible that in one case 3 fps is "barely faster" while in other case it is "much faster". Example: if 5500 gets 163 fps in one test and...
Hardwarezone:
"CREATIVE GeForce 2 Ultra 64MB DDR(250MHz Core/460MHz Memory) is now available in selected shops @ $799 for limited pieces. The retailing price will be above $820 once the promotion stocks run out. "
Before anyone is driven to suicide by $820 price tag, take a look...
It looks to me that the first chart is in 16-bit (I get the same scores in 16-bit, while the second one is 32-bit.
If you look at it a bit closly, you will see that his MAX chart for AMD system is identical to his Normal chart for AMD system and is very close to Normal chart for Intel system...
Humm, I read your comment about frame rates, and I must say I am getting frame rates very close to the his. (PIII 866, GTS 32MB). At what resolution are you getting "20 fps less" then he?
I thought so too, but then I saw the Highpoly test in 3Dmark. My scores almost doubled! I got ~1800 Kt/s with 8 lights when I used 6.18, now I am getting ~3400 Kt/s! (1024x768x16).
