laptop shopping help, question on screens

I've been in the same boat as you for a while. You are pretty much SoL unless you want to spend a lot of money. One option to consider may be the Dell Latitude E6410, 14 inches, optional matte 1400x900 screen. Colors aren't great from what I've read, but if you are just doing work related stuff...

Follow up to 4870 1GB vs 260-216

Mucking around? You go to CCC, set the fan speed to 30%. Done. My card idles at 48 and load never goes above 75 and my PC runs almost silent. After owning a 8800GT, I vowed never again would I deal with such a hot and loud card. Setting up Riva profiles isnt that hard, but its still not...

I just purchased a Panasonic Viera 1080P 42 inch plasma. I have HDTV and the HD channels are amazingly crisp. However, I just hooked up a philips DVP5982 upscailing DVD player and the image certainly isnt HDTV quality. I tried hooking up the player through an HDMI cable and YPbPr cables...

Worth upgrading from 8800gt to 4850

Dont waste your time and money by switching from a 8800gt > 4850, gain is marginal at best. Go with a GTX 260 for 200$ or a 4870.

Cool/Quiet 4850/4870/GTX 260 video card recs

New Catalyst Hotfix

I have a 4870 1 GB and am running DX9. I dont see any microstuttering at all. My benchmark graphs dont have the sharp little spikes in them either. Not sure whats going on. I am running 8.10 with the first hotfix. I get about 41FPS at 1680x1025 with everything on Ultra/High no AA.

Bottleneck with one RV770?

GTX 260 (216) or ATI 4870 1gb?

I tossed a coin too and went with the cheapest using cashback on Ebay. I got my 4870 1GB for only 200$. I switched from nvidia to ati, do I notice any driver difference? No. Go for what you can find the cheapest, like everyone else said.

Bottleneck with one RV770?

As the owner of a 3.2 ghz E4300 and a 4870 1GB, I dont think theres much or any of a bottleneck. My crysis and far cry 2 benchmarks are within 1-2fps of all the benchmarks.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I understand I can 'cancel' out the hairdryer with more noise but I'd rather not have some ungodly noise coming from my near silent PC in the first place.

Or you could wait about 2 days and see how the prices are on the new GTX 260 'Gold' edition. A minor increase in performance, but it should effect prices even more.

Help picking between two 8800 GTs

Save yourself some money and buy the cheaper one and 'superclock' it yourself. I bought the vanilla EVGA 8800GT and it runs at 680/1697/2000 with the stock cooler no prob. If you are comfortable using Rivatuner then OC'ing it yourself isnt that difficult.
