I don't think that you can really go wrong with either an Athlon XP or a socket 754 at this point. You can spend significanly less right now and then upgrade both yoru MB and processor in the future, or spend a lot more now and have an upgrade path available (it will definitely be available for...
You need to hire a professional.
Your problems are most likely Windows issues, not Sonicwall. I frequently recommend SonicWall to customer because of their ease of use for basic functions. Loggging into a Windows domain remotely is not a simple function. By tinkering, you are jeopardizing...
This probably will not be a popular solution, but for ease of use I would take a hard look at MS Small Business Server 2003. The OS cost is only $495 and I believe that it will enable your VPN requirement. For cheap boxes, check out Dell.
My current Soltek SL-75FRN2-RL has 3.
My old Abit KT7-RAID had 4.
Boards that have more than 2 are marketing as "RAID", but I always buy them tfor extra IDE ports. there are tons on the market.
If you are not going to overclock, try this.A great bargain and an effective HSF. If you care about noise, pick up a silent 80mm fan and you are in business.
Thanks for the pics.
I now understand. Your case looks like mine before a changed cables. The diference is that you have the front fan installed to pull air in. Without it, I think that your results would have been similar to mine.
Three Votes in order:
1) Budget Athlon64 boards. The 3000+ has me thinking hard about an Athlon64 system.
2) The new dual channel Via boards for both P4 and AthlonXP.
3) Ati 9100 IGP. I haven't seen a decent review of production boards anywhere yet.
I agree that it wouldn't make a big difference if you are running fans at full speed with one HDD. If you are trying to silence the box and use undervolted slow running fans, then the airflow is not good to start with. Mattyboy90 has 3 HDD and a 9600 Pro AIW. Those 3 HDD block the air intake...
Round Cables!
That is the best piece of advice that I could give any potential Sonata owner. The case has horrible airflow normally, so once you add IDE cables and quieter, slower fans, temps just shoot up. Once I switched to round cables I lost more than 10c of case temp.
Canons are typically faster and cheaper to use. I think that Epson has better photo print quality. There are new Epsons that use individual ink carts, so they should be close in terms of cost. They are faster than they used to be also.
Whatever you do, don't worry too much about the cost of...
I am not convinced that a front fan makes that much difference in the Sonata because the air that it pulls in is heated up by the hard drives. You should look at an aftermarket HSF. I went the cheap route and bought a GC-68 from SVC. I also tried the GC-69, but the fan was significantly...
No. Not if you only do it for a few seconds. Don't touch the blades, just apply incresing pressure to the center until it stops. I can't credit for this method. It is something that I found over at Silent PC Review. Did it myself and it really works.
Open the side and one by one stop each fan by pressing your finger down into the middle of it (gently). I did this when I first got my Sonata. The loudest fans (in order) were video card, CPU HSF & Northbridge HSF. Once I quieted those down, the hard drives drove me nuts with noise. Replaced...
Depends on the drives. I presumed that he was running some sort of RAID array with drives spinning away. In my case, my second drive is a 3 year old Maxtor. Not nearly as quite as my Seagate. Either way, that case is going to be either way too hot or way too loud with 4 harddrives.
Now that the Asus board is shipping, where are the reviews of this chipset? I am intrigued by this and the new Via chipset for P4. If pricing comes in low enough, it may make for some nice boards at good pricing.
Check the temps of your individual drives using MBM. 4 HDD is a lot for the Sonata to handle. Keep in mind that all incoming air gets blown across those hard drives, so the air that you are blowing across the rest of the case has heated up significantly.
Also I would suspect that the 2...
I am trying to judge the relative performance gain between a PIII-M 1.2 from a 2 year old Dell 2600 and a new Dell X300 (w/ Pentium-M 1.2 low voltage). The benchmarks from reviews look really good, but none of them relate beyond the Pentium-M family, especially not back to the PIII-M.
I am...
This is what I got a month or so ago. SVC GC-68
Works great. Can't hear it inside my Sonata. Reduced my temps by over 10c from retail HSF on an Athlon 1.2.
Best of all, you can't beat $3.99! I paid $4.99.
My KT7 Raid hasn't died but I would like to dump it for a board with fewer issues. Is there a board with a different chipset (ie not a Via) that could put my SDRAM to use?
Even if her current camera is not small, you take a differnet approach with a digital. My girlfriend takes at least 5 times the number of pictures as before. With a digital, there are not costs associated with each "click". That won't happen if the camera is big.
I have edited my previous...
Yes, I can think of one. It is too big and heavy. I went through exhaust research for my girlfriend's birthday presennt about a year ago. The Canon A40 and Fuji 2600 were at the top of my list until I actually went to the store and played with them. Within a few minutes I knew that she would not...
SVC GC68! link
Thanks to some recent research on these forums, I just installed one. I replaced an old retail HSF from a 700Mhz duron on my Athlon 1.2 and went from 51-52C to 34-35C. I also installed round IDE cables and reduced voltage by .05v, but the majority of the credit belong to this...
You need to get any Athlon running 100Mhz FSB. Your board should support the T-bird without a problem. The previously suggested 1.1 from newegg is a good bet.
Check out my own perils with moving up from a Duron...
I had this happen a couple of weeks ago.
Log into XP with any other "Computer administrator" account. Then go into User accounts and change the password on the "Administrator" account.
That is how I got around remembering the old password.
I am running the latest wcpuid and I also used the latest cpuid. Both identify this as the Mobile Athlon 4 part while the bios only indentifies the cpu as an athlon (no speed, no multiplier). I am all but convinced that they sent me a mobile cpu.
What I am worried about is the voltage. I...
Lord Evermore, you are truly wise.
I am worried about the core voltage. I have it set at the board default of 1.5v now. Does anyone know the proper setting for the mobile Athlon 4?
It was only about 9 months;)
I really haven't had a time to risk really screwing something up and not having my machine up and running. The HSF on the Abit KT7 is such a pain in the rear that I was sure that I was going to put a screwdriver through the PCB. That is the reason that I am not...
