How is your Nehalem or Westmere processor holding up in modern gaming?

Running GTX 1080 on my i7 920 @ 3.6 GHz (7970 died). Mostly playing dota 2 @ 5k - don't see any reason to upgrade CPU as GPU utilisation is contantly > 90% at that res.

Why is everyone obsessed with 4K?

I definitely feel the difference when trading and looking at PACS with my new Dell UP2715K. For gaming, I fall back to my U2711, or drop the settings on my Dell 5K . Waiting for Pascal or successor to Fiji for a massive upgrade (CPU and GPU wise).

7950 CF users I need your help

With CF you can only use the primary card for display output. In your case you'd need a (m)DP to dual link DVI adapter. If you're running more than 2 non-DP monitors, you'd need active adapters.

2560x1440 27" monitor for gaming/productivity

I use the U2711, but as someone pointed out, the U2713HM is likely to be better if you don't need wide gamut (sounds like you don't). Haven't used any of the others before, but the HP ZR2740w is another one to consider if you can get it cheap.

Intel HD Graphics enough for most (pretty much) full-screen Flash games?

I had issues with " GPU acceleration" on Flash myself (doesn't actually accelerate anything). Plus, the HD graphics on the i3 should make any "low end" discrete cards unnecessary. What about giving your wife your 960T (get her a cheap card like a 6450 or something, and swap out the hard disks)...

That's very strange, does your card have DP? IIRC all Southern Island cards can only do 2 TMDS displays (VGA, DVI, HDMI), so displayport is needed for a third display.

Any good sub-$200 1080p panels that aren't 6-bit dither?

That's pretty good actually. My U2711 has more bleed than that, but they are more at the corners so I don't notice it as much. How much is tolerable, varies from person to person, though.

Will an SATA III SSD work fine in a SATA II computer?

They only push SATA3 limits in sequential r/w (such as transferring huge files around). For most typical workloads with an element of random operations, there would be a penalty, but not huge.
