Arctic MX-2 thermal paste vs Arctic silver 5

Ruby's right. It doesn't really matter. I've used stock, AS5, Ceramique and the gloop that Thermalright supplied with a HR-05 NB heatsink. Haven't noticed any significant difference in the real world. You'd need to be testing your PC in very strict lab conditions to notice any difference...

CPU cooling for Antec 900, quad core, P5E3-Premium

I have the Antec 900 and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. I'm not keen on the combination. It's noisy and not as effective as the bigger coolers. You'd probably be better off going for a CPU cooler that natively accepts a 120mm fan (generally higher CFM and lower noise) over a 92mm fan...

    Silencing an Antec 900

I have this case, and while I like it a lot, I am fed up with the noise it makes. I started off thinking it was fine but now, a year later, I'm not quite so pleased. Most of the noise comes from the Antec fans, but some of it comes from the "wind rush" of the air flow and the side-mounted...

    Powercolor HD4870 can't clip into ASUS P5Q Pro :(

Which all brings me back to my main hypothesis: the card is not going into the case's expansion slot cleanly. If the bracket was like that originally as indicated in the photo above (where ninor indicates the bracket is crooked), I'd return it. It's meant to be straight. If it's not straight...

    Powercolor HD4870 can't clip into ASUS P5Q Pro :(

ninor, Take the card fuly out of the PCI-e slot. Looking at the end of the card at the metal plate where the monitor ports are, you'll see a tab on the left hand side which fits into the expansion slot on your case. The opposite side is where you'll find the hooks where you secure the card...

    Stress Buster

Bear with me, chaps and chapesses. I've had a hard day. I work for the Civil Service in Northern Ireland, in a role that is primarily concerned with the interface between legislation and policy and the operational effects of both. My boss is, by upbringing, a trainer. His boss is an...

    Damping heatsink fin vibrations?

DSF, If the fins on the BTF-90 are loose, you could dampen them with homemade baffle. Get yourself some soft material 2 or 3 mm thick (such as double-sided foam tape - don't remove the backing strips though!) and long enough to reach from the bottom fin to the top fin. Cut deep nicks with a...

    Leadtek Digital Tv tuners

The tuners don't actually display tv. That's the remit of your graphics card. The tuner card only receives and decodes the digital/analogue tv signal for your GPU to display. I'm using the Leadtek DTV1000T with DVB software, displaying on a 19" widescreen monitor via a Radeon X1950Pro ...

    P5Q-E "FSB strap" mystery

Perhaps a stupid question: why are you running your E4500 at an 8x multi? Don't those chips run with 10x or 11x multis? Try lowering you fsb to 333 with max multi and see what happens.

    E8600 Prime stable @ 4Ghz undervolted ;)

Impressive. That's almost 1 GHz more, for 0.5v and 10 degrees C less than my OC'd E4300. For a CPU that costs only...er...almost twice as much as the one I have!!! My usual source doesn't stock them, and the alternative UK source has them listed on pre-order at £188. Ouch...

    Who will buy Nehalem ASAP?

As far as adopting Nehalem asap, not me. I'll wait for a variety of reasons: my E4300 @ 3.15 GHz is doing fine at the minute. I can't see the need for a processor that deals with multithreaded applications just yet: I don't do much in the way of video encoding. I may need to change my...

    Thermalright HR-01 Plus with duct

I'm considering, as part of a planned upgrade to my main rig (see spec in sig), changing from the AC Freezer 7 Pro to a Thermalright HR-01 Plus coupled with a Zalman F3 120mm fan in push configuration. The fan at the back of the case (directly behind the heat sink) will be changed to a Scythe...

WTF?! How come the most effective way to create a knot...

Hmmm, perhaps I should keep my boots in my pockets. I can't seem to keep my laces to stay tied, and that's with double knots! Might make walking a bit interesting, though. Perhaps it a weird fact of physics: things that are tied, or that can be tied, are inherently unstable in whichever...

How's the QC on the TRUE Black Edition?

Who says you have to lap the TRUE? Sure, there are lots of people who say it isn't flat but, allegedly, Thermalright retort that the IHS of Intel chips aren't either and that their heat sinks are built to match. What are you looking for? Is the extra 1 or 2 degrees you'll possibly get from...

Dammit. The guys over there are useless. *heads over to memory forum to prove a point...* Seriously though, unless you've gone through the overclocking guide rigorously, you'll be hard pushed to identify a single failure in your set-up. Did you try everything at stock values first...

GundamF91, Thanks for your reply (and the same to everyone else). Interesting... Do you really think that an upgrade of CPU isn't worth it at present given my current spec and planned GPU upgrade? Both BunnyFubbles and Toadeater's replys seems to suggest that's the case. If it's...

Any Benefits of Larger L2 Cache?

Why? It's going to cost me £109 (at current prices). The question really is, why is it going to be good? It's not that I don't believe you (I do, if I've read the reviews correctly) but the cache issue is a bit of virgin territory for me. Is it the cache? Is that important in gaming?

Any Benefits of Larger L2 Cache?

Confession first: I know how to put components together, and I've been lucky in that I haven't had any serious problems so far. After that, computer architecture is just a load of zeros and ones to me... Problem now: I'm thinking (because I've got some "spare" cash coming) of...

    Thermal Paste

You are alleged to find a slight reduction in temps (perhaps 1 or 2 degrees C) after up to 100 heat cycles (Power on, CPU Load and Power Off) with AS5. Unless you keep your ambient temperatures absolutely stable, it's a negligible benefit. Variations i the weather will probably disguise the drop.

How much performance increase from PCIe 1.0/1 to PCIe 2.0?

AnandTech Discourse on PCIe 2.0 tomshardware benchmark It would appear that PCIe 2.0, while a very good idea, is still in it's infancy. The difference between 2 cards running at 8x and 16x in Crossfire is, to most people, imperceptible at the moment. That said, it is the way forward...

Easy question about memory speed compatability...

1333 MHz rated FSB translates as 333 MHz bus speed (which you multiply by the CPU multiplier to ascertain your core clock speed) quad-pumped. Ergo 333 x 4 = 1333. Take the bus speed (333 MHz) and multiply by 2 for synchronos DDR2 memory speed and you get 667MHz, which is well within the...

    Quad or Dual

Taltamir, I have nothing against Quads. If I thought it was the best CPU for me (based on lots of variables) I'd get one. I bought an Intel E4300 last year, and overclocked it to just over 3.0 GHz. At the time, it was the best CPU for me. It hasn't let me down for what I do. But times...

lol. I've got a Gigabyte P35 board and, despite the fact that it works, the BIOS revisions were rubbish (one wouldn't work properly), and I wouldn't consider buying another unless someone was able to demonstrate that it was far superior (or a damn sight cheaper) than anything else. That said...

    Quad or Dual

I'm not entirely sure that is true, based on this benchmark this benchmark While Quads may have some advantages, it appears that the Duos can at least hold their own, are generally cheaper, and cost less to run. Perhaps some games benefit from Quads now, and more may do in the future, but I...

Ganesh1: Post all your pertinent BIOS settings (it takes a bit of time noting them down, but it could be worth it in the long run if everyone can see exactly what you are doing - have a scout around on other threads to see what adjustments people use when overclocking). The G33 chipset...
