    Unless I'm confused here... the i7 870 probably has a "locked" multiplier in the sense you can't increase it higher for overclocking purposes, but you should be able to overclock by increasing the FSB. Or does your mobo not allow any changes to FSB clocks or something?

    Nope, not gonna happen. If anything, computers are using less power as they're becoming more efficient. You'd have to have an insanely beefy high-end computer with insane overclocking to get anywhere close to maxing out the home power circuit, and even then, the beast barely hit 1500W.

    ^I think you're pretty much right on there. For most people, "gamer" mobos aren't necessary. I find there are plenty of excellent choices for mobos at around $125 that have more than adequate VRMs for moderate overclocking.
