I've read now that using the sysprep tool with -oobe and -generalize settings before shutting down and making the swap should make this mobo swap possible.

About to pull the trigger!

Just look at performance reviews. Right now in that segment the 4870 1GB is the superior card, it's about 3-5% less than a GTX 280 for $100 less. Probably the best bet, but on a strict comparison to the GTX 260 or 260 216, it's the better card.

That's a good question, tough to pinpoint. 9800GX2 is currently the second fastest single slot video card you can buy. If you allow for multi-gpu to be scaling. It looks like this at present 4870 1GB>GTX280>9800GX2>4870X2. The first three cards are all really close in performance as well...

The new high settings which are 'gamer' play better now, but the new very high which is 'enthusiast' seems more taxing. Also the performance under DX9 seems to be better and on it's max settings, offers most of what you see in DX10 now.
