I prefer a heavy-handed approach to these problems:
Take it apart and rebuild it one step at a time. Clean everything and remount the cpu and/or gpu coolers.
Run bare minimum hardware to get into bios: 1 stick ram, no sound card, no disks, onboard gpu if your system has that capability...

Remove mobo from case, put on cardboard or something non-conductive, to eliminate the possibility of a short between the mobo and the case.

Asus Xonar DS. I have one of these. It is excellent. It replaced a Creative SB Recon. Gaming surround sound is similar between the two. Music on the Asus is much better. Xonar utilities are more functional, better layout. Easy Asus driver install. So tired of Creative driver non-support.
