ACk, why does each distro have to do things differently?

You could have your install script identify which distro is used and then pull the appropriate installation files so they won't have to know which version. Though it really isn't hard to figure this out for users. You could also just focus on one distro and that's it.

Anyone using Server 2008 as a workstation OS?

64 GB holy... I can't even use my entire 8 GB most of the time. What do you do with that much? I guess if they can afford a workstation with those specs the price for 2008 is probably nothing.

Windows 7 Server to be 'minor release'

Anyone using Server 2008 as a workstation OS?

I would like to use it, but I think overall it is cost prohibitive to do so. Vista x64 flies for me, so I really cannot complain.

Massive renaming program for audio files?

What iTunes does is breaks songs down by their ID information into folders Artist > Album > Track # Title.mp3 I don't think I am 100% clear on what you are trying to accomplish. I would try http://dukelupus.pri.ee/AudioMagus.php because you can set it up to rename them however you want.

Best anti-virus for Vista x64?

I'd definitely give Avira a shot. I usually go with AVG, but I read a review some place about Avira and decided to change things up. Works great so far.

I use the k-lite codec pack on Vista x64. Media player classic seems to work just fine and WMP opens DVDs. I actually haven't tried VLC because I haven't had to use it.

I ended up using this nifty tool: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html Worked great. I just had to copy the registry folder and used this tool to find the key. bruceb, Tesk Disk seems like a good tool, just a bit too complicated for me. It did tell me that my NTFS size...

I already tried that. Like in my original post I said the disc doesn't recognize the partition as being NTFS, it just keeps saying drive not found when I try the recovery commands.

Organize Music

I never knew Windows Media Player could do that. I use iTunes myself and it does a great job. It works similarly to WMP as posted above. Before I did everything manually and I used Audio Magus as a good MP3 renamer.

Solid State Drives: yay or nay?

They have newer processes to handle the data so the lifetime expectancy exceeds mechanical drives. I would love to get a SSD, but the prices are still far too high. Hopefully since Samsung plans on rolling out 256 GB drives be the end of the year the prices will drop.

I'll be going to college this fall....

I would second the Thinkpad X61 option. I've had professors use them and they work very well. You would be better off taking notes typing, but for those math and science classes it is nice to have the tablet option.

What happens when Windows runs out of drives?

I knew you could do this in Linux but never knew about it on Windows. Good information though I doubt I'll ever go passed Z drives.

Buying a laptop: which one?

For the Photoshop and games I would recommend a 7200 RPM drive. Have you checked out the Dell outlet? You could definitely save some cash or get more machine for your money.

In a way it was the beginning of Vista since Vista is based on Windows 2003 Server. Windows 2008 is based off of Vista SP1.

What's a RELIABLE 802.11 NIC and Router for Vista; inexpensive too?

I've had a terrible time with Linksys PCI devices and this Belkin I bought is being flaky. The one that has been solid was an Abit Airpace PCI Express x1. I think I'm going to have to buy one if this thing doesn't get its act together.

I think one of the data corruption problems comes from people trying to use the shared drive as storage for things like uTorrent. The corruption comes from pretty specific events. I plan on building a WHS as soon as it supports x64, but I plan on using a spare Raptor drive as the main drive then...
