AT World of Warcraft Thread (WotLK, where do you play, General BS and all that)

Killing the heart activates his Hard Mode. Therein lies your problem. :P Also trounced Razorscale and hit a brick wall at Ignis. FWIW, switching to a druid main tank helped immensely. Even after the armor nerfs, his is far enough ahead of the warriors to survive a lot longer here.

Just so someone says it out loud..... their plan is to allow massive overclocking, whilst blowing all of the hot air in completely the wrong direction (i.e. against the normal airflow) for the most common ATX cases. Yes?

Small demo or something I can download to stress video card?

Just to elaborate... ATI Tool tries to check for problems and alert you, whereas FurMark simply generates enormous load until you either crash or stop it.

I believe the F@H client detects your GPU when it runs, and if they haven't put your model on the list... well, it doesn't run. They'll have to compile a new build with the latest model numbers.

Folding@Home VMware

Bump for love. I'm upgrading to Windows 7 soon, and adding enough RAM to do things like this. This summer it's either return to SMP point production, or stop wasting electricity on my main rig at home, and let the office machines do the heavy lifting.

Q9300 at 3.30ghz

3.2-3.4 is reasonable with a high end heatpipe cooler and a lot of BIOS tweaking. The components in your sig should certainly be able to do this. Check the overclocking stickies for details. Shoot for ~1.30 volts and <70 degrees C; past 1.35v and you're getting risky.

GPU F@H crashes my dell

Any chance you can open the side of the case without voiding the warranty, and see what the power supply is rated for? Those are conservative components compared to an overclocker's rig, but OEMs like to reeeally skimp on power supplies. Overloading it will cause hard crashes like this.

Are you referring to an External hard drive that you want to take out of its enclosure? In which case, these are usually just ordinary internal hard drives with a controller in the case. Once you remove it, it should behave like a regular internal hard drive.

WoW - Quite intensive these days - CPU wise at least

Eh. You're having trouble with the maximum possible settings in the busiest possible locations? Imagine that. Turning down the spell detail to Medium (during raids) and things like AntiAliasing / Texture Filtering (in general) will greatly help you with a pretty minimal impact on your experience.

FAHMon screwup

How does the log for the dead GPU end? If it doesn't clearly say that it was shutdown, and simply froze at a certain % progress, FAHMon has no way to know.

headless GPU crunching box?

There is also a known issue with most forms of remote desktop apps for Windows where they corrupt the display and cause Folding@Home to error out. There's a warning somewhere in the FAQs that basically amounts to, "never do this." :-/

I'm not sure why you think this would ever happen, without a major change across all computer hardware in the world. Games are written to be flexible enough for anyone with a reasonable computer to run; scaling video to any lower OR higher resolution is only limited by what your components can...

Building for 4 Ghz with a Q9550 on air?

4.0 may be possible with the new stepping, but not easy. Extremely unlikely with the older stepping. 3.6 is much more reasonable -- the farther you push, the harder each extra mhz becomes.

Long term vision for FAH: Science, clients, etc

I just caught that this morning, too. It gives me a glimmer of hope for the future, after giving up on WinSMP and moving back to the Classic client. They've done a lot of great things this year, but stretched themselves thin by starting too many projects at once. Thank god they haven't forgotten...

I take it you mean WinXP? Vista is completely different, and was already pretty low on CPU use. -SMP # flag: For future use. Setting it to anything but 4 will not function with A1 core WUs.
